Is Randy Moss the Next Terrell Owens?

As we all know the NFL and T.O. have parted company. He held a workout to show the NFL what he could do and nobody came. Now Terrell is part of Arena Football. Not that there is anything wrong with arena football but it is a giant step down for a guy that was once one of the NFL's premiere receivers.By now we all know that Randy Moss wants to return to the NFL...but is there room for him?Some question if he can still stretch the field. Others wonder has he lost a step and how much his skills have deteriorated....after all he is 35....certainly no spring chicken in the world of professional sports.Moss is boasting he can still run a 4:3 forty even if that were true is it good enough. As one coach put it....this isn't an Olympic try out. Sure he can run a post and go but can he distance himself from a corner and safety covering him? The big issue is his quickness and ability to move around people and get open. Does he still have the ability to cut and to explode off the line?As always with Moss their are two camps with differing opinions. Some of the coaches that worked with him in 2010 say no and back up their opinion with how he was benched by Tennessee and had few catches with no appearances in the end zone during his last season in football.Like Owens, Moss's biggest issue is his attitude. Recently former teammate and ESPN commentator Cris Carter discussed Randy Moss and his comeback. “It’s not an age thing. It needs to be addressed. I believe it’s the elephant in the room. It’s that thing called quit." “And Randy, not like any other superstar I’ve met, he has more quit in him than any of those other players." “But Randy, when things don’t go well, like no other player I’ve ever been around or associated with, he has a quit mechanism in him that’s huge. That needs to be addressed before he signs with any team.”That is dropping the Q Bomb big time. Those are the comments that need to be said and my guess is what the teams thinking of giving Moss a chance are discussing behind closed doors.Former coach and ESPN commentator Lou Holtz once said, I never learned anything by talking." This must have been one of those rare occasions where Randy Moss was listening in-between sessions of blowing his own horn. He did respond to Carters comments on his twitter account. He came out swinging at the one man who really has tried to help him through out the years. Moss tweeted, “its sad how u stroked ur own ego when u were suppose to b my mentor!then u wonder why karma bites u in the ass! #goodlukwhof,” Note to Randy Moss, this is one of those times where you shut up, listen and adjust your attitude. Carter is still mentoring you and trying to help you. Core Muscle Training for Football Part 2

If you are like me, you are tired and bored with doing crunchers. They are a good work-out for the abs but they don't work out the entire core. If you are like me......I some how manage to strain my neck....maybe its an age thing in my case but either way I manage to hurt my neck doing crunchers.In this core muscle work-out tip we will rely on the expertise of David Jack, director of TeamWorks Fitness in Acton, Massachusetts. He will demonstrate how to effectively do a Kettlebell Figure 8 exercise. There are several advantageous in using this work-out. Not only will it work the core muscles from all angles it will work the shoulders and give the thighs an isometric work-out all at the same time.First we will discuss the proper position. Set your feet about shoulder width apart and the assume a squat position with the back and head up and in a straight line. Place the kettle mid to the front of your feet and your elbows pressing against the knees. This will insure you work all the core muscles and stabilize the spine.With one hand pickup the kettle and begin doing a figure 8 changing hands with each pass. When I did this I did feel the tightening in all my core muscles. Be sure to suck the stomach in to keep the abs tight and the belly flat. I particularly felt the burn in the stomach muscles going up into the chest. I also felt a burn in the quads and hamstrings.Suffering deteriorating discs in my neck and lower back made me wonder if I could do this exercise but I found it easy to do and felt the burn in the areas I was told I would.See how to do the Kettlebell Figure 8 and decide for yourself if it is an exercise you want to include in your work-out exercise. The holidays are over and spring training is around the corner. Time for football players to start thinking of getting back in shape.

Going into spring camp with a strong core muscle group can give a player a competitive edge. That means doing more than "crunchers" and getting that "six pack" back in shape.

What you want is muscles that will stabilize the spine, pelvis and shoulder girdle. This will give you better balance reduce the chance of injury and help generate powerful movements from the extremities.

In this article we will focus on one proven exercise that will pay bigger dividends than just the every day crunches. We will explore how to do "The Mountain Climber with Feet on the Wall."

Boise State Broncos vs. Georgia Bulldogs

Two Weeks from tonight Boise State and Georgia tee it up in the Georgia Dome. It will be one heck of a game and one of the featured games of the weekend.

I sure am looking forward to that game, I think Boise has a great shot to redeem itself from the beating we took back in 2005 between the hedges in Athens, Georgia.

This time around we have a different and better coaching staff than the 2005 Broncos, we have a much better more composed quarterback, Kellen Moore finish 4th in the Heisman and is 8 games away from becoming the wining-est quarterback in college history.

Georgia like the Broncos is minus their two best receivers so both teams will be looking for help from new guys and former backups.

Offensively I have to give the edge to BSU in the running back department. Georgia is missing there two best runners while Boise has Doug Martin and DJ Harper back.

Harper is hungry and has alot to prove. In the first half of the 3rd game of the season these last two years Harper tore the acl in the left knee and each year sat out the rest of the season.

In tonight's scrimmage both Martin and Harper looked awesome, both appear ready for the Bulldogs in the Georgia Dome. Having them carry the mail will take pressure off Moore and make the Georgia defense play more honest.

I do not know much about the Georgia Defense but do think they are much better than their 2010 6-7 record indicate. They do have two monsters are the nose guard position. One man weighs in at 350 lbs and the smaller guy at a slim 340. It is difficult for me to imagine men that size and then toss in they are quick and athletic. They will test the Bronco center all night.

I think it will be as close and exciting game as last years opener against Beamer Ball and Virginia Tech back in DC.

Like the VT game I think Boise wins a close one and it will be on the legs and backs of Doug Martin and DJ Harper

As fall camps begin across the country athletes face the same issue of heat illness and heat stroke. We hear or read stories every year at this time of football players suffering heat related health problems or dying from heat stroke.

This article will provide some tips on how to protect yourself from heat related issues and how to avoid over-hydrating and avoid water poisoning.

Heat Stroke:
Heat stroke is a serious medical emergency that occurs when the body's cooling system shuts down. The core body temperature becomes very high and can exceed 105 degrees. Symptoms can include lack of sweat, hot dry skin, increased pulse rate, confusion, seizures and coma, left untreated heat stroke can result in death.

Athletes are more likely to experience exertional heat stroke.

Exertional heat stroke:
This is the most serious of heat related illnesses. Athletes are moer at risk to suffer exertional heat stroke. The difference between exertional heat stroke and regular heat stroke is that ahletes continue to sweat despite the core temprature.

Diagnosis or Exertional Heat Stroke:
The body core temprature is 105 F with diminished mental status such as confusion, disorientation and clumsiness. If these symptoms are ignored the athlete may collapse and enter into a coma. Should any of these signs be present cooling the patent and emergency treatment are essential.

Hyponatremia:
This is water poisoning and it can be fatal. Water poisoning is when the athlete has many of the same signs as dehydration but they have flushed all the sodium from their system. Adequate sodium balance is necessary for transmitting nerve impulses and proper muscle function, and even a slight depletion of this concentration can cause problems. Studies have shown that high intensity athletes can lose up to 2 grams of salt per liter of sweat. Replacing this during the event is critical to performance and safety.

Symptoms of Hyponatremia:
The symptoms are similar to dehydration, nausea, dizziness, cottonmouth and should not be ignored.

When you are working out in these hot temperatures pay attention to what signs your body is giving off. Before practice or workouts drink water and beverages that will supply electrolytes.

Brett Favre Say It Aint So !!!

Just when we thought Favre was retired and had faded into the sunset his name and a come back resurface. This time it isn't Favre saying he wants to come back it is new speculation that one of the NFL Teams may want him back.

In an online article by Doug Farrar posted today in Shutdown Corner he leads us to believe that the Philadelphia Eagles may want Favre to become their back up quarterback for Michael Vick.

The scary part, Farrar makes sense about having Favre join the Eagles. He points out the association between Eagles Coach Reid and Marty Mornhinweg from his days in Green Bay. Favre would certainly understand the Eagle offehttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifnse.

Given Vick's " no prisoners" approach to the game and the injuries he sustained last season, the Eagles do need a veteran backup QB. It is expected Philadelphia will trade current backup Kevin Kolb. Adding fuel to the fire of a Favre comeback and joining the Eagles, is the Michael Vick quote when he was asked about how he would feel having old #5 as his backup.

How To Do A Healthy Workout

What you do before you workout is as important as what you do when you get started. Before you workout set the tone to ensure you have a healthy workout.

This article will focus strictly on hydration.

The way to set the tone is to make sure you are properly hydrated. Think about how important that statement is. Each year we hear about or see on television the tragedy of student athletes and pros dying from dehydration while working out in hot temperatures. Deaths that could be avoided.

Drink water before a workout. Chugging it down just before you begin wont produce the results you want. It is best to drink water through out the day around 16 to 20 ounces a few hours before you begin.

In a study in the April 2010 Journal of Athletic Training, runners who started a 12-K race dehydrated on an 80-degree day finished about two and a half minutes slower compared to when they ran it hydrated. If you are dehydrated during your workouts you reduce your body's ability to transfer heat, while making your heat work harder, making it difficult for your body to meet aerobic demands.

Cold Drinks

Whether your workout is strictly running or a combination of exercises you want to consume cold drinks prior to your workout. Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise published the results of a 2008 study. What they learned was cyclists who drank cold beverages before and during their workout exercised nearly 12 minutes longer than those who drank warm beverages. By cooling the body down the heart does not work as hard, the body transfers heat more efficiently and the you can do a better workout.

Severe dehydration Symptoms:
1. Extreme thirst
2. Lack of sweating
3. 3. Little to no urination. Urine can be a dark yellow
4. Very dry mouth and mucous membranes
5.

Screen Passing Game for Football

The screen pass has proven to be a very potent weapon in any offensive game plan. When used and executed right it can wreak havoc on the defense.

In this article we will define what is a screen pass, some different screen plays, when to us them and why.

What is a Screen Pass:

It is a play from the short passing game that is designed to look like a long vertical pass play. Teams line up the same way the do when they are throwing the ball down the field.

The quarterback drops back like in any regular pass play and the offensive linemen hold their blocks for up to two seconds before releasing and letting the pass rushers charge the QB. Its purpose is to trick the defense, reduce the number of pass defenders, have the offensive men blocking down field and burn the defense for big yards.

The targets would be the same as any vertical pass play, wide receivers, tight ends and running backs.

Typical Screen Plays:

1. Conventional Screen:

Typically this pass is thrown to the running back who positions himself between

pass rushers and the offensive linemen blocking down field. The pass is thrown

behind the line of scrimmage and the linemen can block down field taking

out the linebackers and the receivers block the defensive backs.

2. Bubble Screen:

The inception of this play is credited to former Montana Grizzly Coach Don Read and credit

for its prominence goes to former Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz who learned the play from

Read and introduced it to Division 1 football.

The wide receivers are the targets for this play. They take one step off the line of

scrimmage then head back towards the quarterback to receive the ball as the linemen

block past them setting up the screen. This play is very effective against man to man

coverages and zone defenses.

3. Quarterback Throw Back Screen:

This play calls for the quarterback to either toss the ball to a running back or

throw it to a wide receiver. Then the QB runs in the opposite direction will a wall

linemen blocking in front of him with the running back or receiver passing the

ball back to the quarterback. This play is also known as the "Blitz Breaker." It is

most effective against heavy blitzing defenses.

4. When to use the Screen Pass:

This passing strategy can be used most anytime during a game and is very effective

against teams that are blitzing a lot. Those teams are very vulnerable to the

Quarterback Throw Back Pass while teams that are in man to man or zone are

exposed to the Bubble and Jail Break Screen.

When the running game is stalling or the offense cant consistently get going the screen

pass is a way to get things going. It can make the defense play honest and give the

quarterback more confidence such as how the Denver Broncos have done with Tim

Tebow.

5. Why Use Screen Plays:

1. Spark a stalled running game

2. Slow down the pass rush

3. Beat the Blitz

4. Open up the vertical passing game

5. Exploit man to man and zone coverages.

In conclusion the screen pass should be part of every team's offensive game plan. It makes defenses play more honest and have to take the strategy into account in their defensive game plan. It creates more ways to get your skill players into space with the ball and get big gains.

Bank Of America Gets Foreclosed on by Home Owner

You read it right, a branch of the infamous Bank of America was foreclosed on in Collier County Florida.

I know this post runs contrary to the theme of the blog and has nothing to do with sports or football. However we have all heard the horror stories of Bank of America abusing home owners, foreclosing on people they should not have.

This week Brett Bair of Fox News did a special on banks wrongly foreclosing on people, telling customers to let their home get a few months behind to qualify for the home modification loan. Once patrons followed the advice on the home modification loans and made the new lower payments, Bank of America was denying the modification and was foreclosing on these home owners.

In Collier Count Florida the bank initiated foreclosure proceedings against the Nyergers. The problem was, the Nyergers paid cash for the house and still had to go through a court proceeding to prove Bank of America had no interest in the home what so ever since the Nyergers never had a mortgage.

The judge ordered all court costs be assigned to the Bank of America and that is where the banks arrogance came back to bite them. For 5 months after the matter was settled the bank refused to return phone calls and letters of demand. The Nyergers attorney foreclosed on the back and the video below shows.

There is 35 second commercial before the actual foreclosure video starts, it also stops a couple of time but enjoy seeing Bank of America get theirs.

Boise State Football Blue: Is It Becoming A Trend?

In 1986 Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier decided to make a bold move and take big risk. When he was installing a new astro turf field in Bronco Stadium he decided to make it blue. Thus the Boise State Broncos became the first and only team in the country to play on a blue field.

Naturally there were the detractors and I was one of them. Back then the field earned the nick name "Smurf Turf". On those rare occasions the Broncos played on national television the TV announcers would pre-warn the audience, "don't adjust your sets the color of the field is blue."

Today the Boise State Broncos are known nation wide for their blue turf and the way they play football. Gone are the urban legends of ducks mistaking the field for water and dying dive bombing in for a place to float. Gone is the name smurf turf, today we call it playing on "The Blue."

Back in 86 Bleymaier took a big gamble and made his move as a publicity stunt hoping to get Bronco Stadium on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Bronco Stadium did not get on the cover of Sports Illustrated back then. However the team and some of "The Blue" did last season.

If imitation is the best form of flattery then Boise State Blue is becoming a trend, in at least the high school ranks.

Currently there are 3 high schools and one college across the country that have followed suite and have blue football fields and they are about to be joined by another.

West Hills Chaminade High School in California is going blue. Football Coach Croson said the blue turf will be similar to the field at Boise State. Construction will be finished in time for the fall season.

Current list of high schools with blue fields.
High schools in Barrow, Alaska; Hidalgo, Texas; and Lovington, N.M., play their football games on artificial blue surfaces. Division II The University of New Haven reinstated football in 2009 and went with Boise State Blue as the color of their football field.

Ohio State Football Coach Jim Tressel Resigns

Several Months ago I asked the question Is Jim Tresse's job safe? So did the press."Asked if he considered firing Tressel, Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee said then: “No, are you kidding? Let me just be very clear: I’m just hopeful the coach doesn’t dismiss me.

Today we got that answer, no it was not. Shocking Buckeye Nation, Jim Tressel has resigned as coach of the Ohio State Football program. Even though it comes as a shock, it had to be anticipated.

I never felt a self imposed 5 game benching of Tressel was going to satisfy the NCAA. Tressel just crossed to many lines. The NCAA was generous to the Buckeyes when they allowed the players involved in tattoo gate to play in their BCS Bowl. But when it became apparent Tressel knew far more than he let on and began a cover up, it was just a matter of time before Tressel would be forced to resign or Ohio State would have to fire the legendary coach. Today was the day.

Obviously this was not a spur of the moment thing nor will Ohio State miss a beat by having to do a job search for a new coach. Athletic Director Gene Smith has things well in hand. “We look forward to refocusing the football program on doing what we do best—representing this extraordinary university and its values on the field, in the classroom, and in life,” Smith said in a statement Monday. “We look forward to supporting Luke Fickell in his role as our football coach. We have full confidence in his ability to lead our football program.”

After 10 years at the helm, Tressel leaves Ohio State with a record of 106-22-0 and eight BCS Bowl Game appearances.

John Elway vs Elway

It seems more than the NFL lockout makes John Elway unhappy. He is displeased with a Fort Collins punk band using his surname and calling themselves " Elway".

Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of John Elway for the way he conducted himself on and off the field. He is a fine role model on how athletes should conduct themselves on and off the field.

Elway has taken such offense to the bands choice of name that he had his attorney write the group "Elway" requesting the band change its name, however he did stop short of suing or issuing a cease and desist order.

One would think with all that is going in with the NFL lockout as a Denver Bronco vice president he would have much more to worry about than the name of a punk band.

The band, to its credit, was mostly amused. In a statement released via punknews.org, the band acknowledged the letter and suggested Elway had better things to do in the wake of the Broncos' disastrous 2010 season.

"We have no intention of changing the name again. We love the name, regardless of what connotations are inferred by the listener. Surely, if the Dead Kennedys could become one of punk's most popular bands without incurring litigation, Elway can keep their moniker and continue making so-so music for our dozens of fans to enjoy."

Mark Richt Is A Stud

By now some of you have heard that Georgia Football Coach Mark Richt is selling his Lake Hartwell property and that it is a sign of him getting ready to leave UGA. The bloggers and others who have speculated that as being the reason are wrong.

Coach Richt may or may not be on the hot seat at Georgia but his position as head coach has nothing do with his decision to list the property. No his decision to sell is based on a higher calling and more noble reasons. After he read a book, “The Hole in Our Gospel,” written by Richard Stearns, it altered the coaches life.

His noble reasons for selling the lake house are simple, he and his wife saw that it would free up more cash for them to donate to charity, to make a positive impact on the lives of those less blessed.

“Within the last year, I read this book, “The Hole in Our Gospel,” written by Richard Stearns. He’s the president of World Vision, U.S. I think people understand who World Vision is but, basically, they help the poor. Through their organization, you can help children, you can help build wells, you can buy them donkeys, whatever people need. World Vision helps people across the world. Well, anyway, there was a lot of statistical data in there about the amount of people that live on a dollar a day around this world. Billions of people. So I’m reading this book and it really affected me. It helped me realize that what we have is way more than we need and that our ability to give is hindered by this property. I guess that’s the best way to tell you. We just wanted to be in a better position to give and bless people that don’t have anything. We felt like this was one way to be able to do that.”

Richt went on to say the reason he delayed his decision to list the house was he knew the speculation it would cause so he delayed till after recruiting season and spring ball.

I have long known that Mark Richt was a class act and a credit UGA and college football. Now he is even more, the man is a stud who walks his talk. This summer he and his family are taking a trip to Honduras to watch World Vision in action and help dig and develop water wells for the people there. Troy Polamalu is a stud and ideal role model. During the current players strike Polamalu has walked his talk. Troy has always said and education and degree are more important than athletics. Last Friday at age 30 he took care of unfinished business as he crossed the stage in cap and gown and received his diploma graduating from the University of Southern California. "I'm thrilled to announce that on this cool, sunny Friday morning I donned a cap and gown, walked across the stage in the beautiful Alumni Park at University of Southern California, and was handed my diploma. I'm officially a USC graduate! The majority of top picks in the NFL get drafted before they complete their college education. Harmon Killebrew Stops Fighting

It was announced today that baseball slugger and hall of famer Harmon Killebrew will enter hospice care and end his battle with cancer. His doctors have informed him the cancer has progressed beyond medical treatment and is incurable.

The world of sports will lose a true gentleman, great baseball player and role model.

Recently Boise weatherman Rick Lanz from KTVB had occasion to visit Norman, Ok and the Sooner campus. He was there to visit the meteorology department. While he was there he decided to interview some students and ask if they remembered the 2006 Fiesta Bowl. The following video is the interview.

Sunday night osama bin laden got clawed. For over three decades he messed with the Eagle and Sunday night he got clawed as he felt the bullet from a Navy Seal's gun crash through his forehead and end his life.

I recall the first time I ever heard his name and like others, then Senator Al Gore, had trouble pronouncing his name. At Congressional hearings during the Reagan years a young Oliver North pronounced bin laden as the most dangerous man on earth. Sadly we became more aware of who bin lade was and why Colonel North made his pronouncement.

Like any who was old enough and saw the Twin Towers go down that assault on the Pentagon and saw the wreckage of the jet in Pennsylvania, I was incensed and wanted revenge.

Sunday night that was fulfilled as bin laden became a victim of his own hate, hate he used to justify murdering peoples from all around the world in many nations. People who were unable to fight back because they never saw it coming. People who were innocent and were only in the wrong place at the wrong time. Their deaths have screamed for decades for retribution and finally at long last it has come and bin laden can no longer kill or maim people.

For me it is justice that like his victims the last thing he heard was the sound of a blast and saw a flash of light as he realized his life was over. As an American it makes me proud to know the last face he ever saw was that of an American, a US Navy Seal that resolved our differences with extreme prejudice while extending the compliments of President Obama and the citizens of the United States and sent bin laden into eternity with the message firmly implanted in his brain, mess with the Eagle___ you get the claw and Sunday night thanks to all the men and women who spent all most 10 years focused on finding him, bin laden got clawed.

Is Jim Tressel Finished At Ohio State?

Jim Tressel just keeps digging his hole deeper and deeper. When you see the video below you will see what I mean. He is learning the hard way that the cover up is worse than the crime.

Tressel now owns he broke the rules and went from a two game suspension to a 5 game suspension. I dont think that will be enough. I think he will be forced to leave. His actions have OSU in deep dirt.

The NCAA does not like to be played or lied to, as tattoo gate continues to unfold it becomes more apparent that OSU and Tressel are both guilty. They should have just fessed up and taken the hit. Instead they lied and cheated another team out of a BCS berth. I look for the NCAA to come down on them like thunder and tag them as repeat offenders.

As you can tell from the video, Tressel is packing a weak lunch and every time he opens his mouth he does further damage to The Buckeyes, time for Jim to go?

Cam Newton Beats Reggie Bush

Why should college athletes play it straight? It seems in the world of college sports if you are crooked you can get a big pay check, doesn't seem to matter that they cheated to win.

I know I rant about this sort of thing alot and have gone off on Cam Newton a few times. I recognize his football talent but have no respect for the player or the man.

Is it just me or did some of you think Newton was laughing all the way through last season on his way to the Heisman and the National Title Game? I was left with the impression he was taunting the public laughing at all of his as he saw rules changed or ignored to protect his eligibility status. What little I read of his Heisman speech made me sick. To me he comes across as arrogant and with the opinion I am Cam the rules don't apply to me.

Personally I think Stanford's Andrew Luck should have won that award, not Scam Newton.

You look at Reggie Bush, he did similar to Newton and got a nice endorsement deal with Addidas and was paid a million a year to be the face of their products. Bush became and instant millionaire for cheating, he did suffer giving back his unearned Heisman. To me, so what, that doesn't give the guy that should have won the thrill of having his family and friends see him have his day in the sun.

What Bush did was become instantly rich and left others to pay the bill and the USC Trojans of today are the ones picking up the tab. Pete Carroll is safe in the pros with the Seattle Sea Hawks while the men from Troy lose scholarships and can't play in an bowl games.

So far Newtons's career seems to be following that of Reggie Bush, he has signed a deal with Under Armour that is said to surpass the amount received by Reggie Bush.

I guess all that's left is to see if Auburn will get punished as hard as USC and if Heisman people will more quickly ask for the trophy back than they did with Bush. Right now Newton, well he is laughing all the way to the bank while when its all said and done will leave others to pick up the tab for his act.

Bill Murray Did What Jack Lemmon Couldn't

We all know that Bill Murray and Jack Lemon have left large footprints in the entertainment industry. Both actors have enjoyed huge commercial success in comedy movies and playing serious roles.

Both men were serious golfers with a deep love for the game. Each of them loved playing the tournament at Pebble Beach. Some might recall it when the tournament was called the Crosby after Bing Crosby. Seems when the contract expired Mrs Crosby thought Bing's name would pay her more than the tournament was willing. But that's another story.

Over the years Lemmon had what many would consider great success at Pebble Beach and finished high in the Pro Am rankings as the amateur. However he was always close but no cigar. Lemmon made it a life time goal to be on the winning team just once in his life. he did not make it.

Bill Murray has succeeded where Lemmon didn't. Murray and pro golfer D. A. Points won the AT&T Pro Am at Pebble Beach this last weekend. It was Murray's and Points a tour veteran, first PGA win. I think this has to be one of the top Cinderella sports stories of 2011.

I dont know about you but I do love the Cinderella stories. Congrats to Bill Murray and D.A. Points.

Tiger Woods: In the Woodshed Again

Once again Tiger Woods has gotten himself taken to the woodshed. Not for his poor golf or for playing with the "babes". This time Tiger is in trouble for his on course etiquette.

No he was not caught cussing off camera or throwing one of his now infamous hissy fits over a poor shot. According to TV reporter Ewen Murray what Tiger did was "Disgusting". Murray went on to say, "there are some parts of him that are just arrogant and petulant". What Tiger did that so upset Murray was spit on the green. Yes indeedy Tiger has found new ways to upset some of the folks. Granted this is just poor judgment, he spit on the green. Yes this heinous crime was spitting.

Seems Tiger just cant do anything right these days. His game is in the gutter, his public image is shot and now he spits in a golf course. I would think Mr Murray has better things to focus on but apparently not. Any how Tiger has apologized and is paying a fine to the PGA.

Regardless of his personal life Tiger has been for golf in his generation what Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus were for theirs.

Whats Wrong With The Univeristy of Indiana?

Talk about rejection, the University of Indiana is sure getting their fair share and more. They hired a new football coach and like any coach he started scouring the country for coaches he thought would be a good fit for his program and help turn Indiana football around.

He raided the Boise State Broncos coaching staff and came away with the receivers coach, Brent Pease. However 2 weeks after Pease accepted the OC job at Indiana the Texas Longhorns came to the Broncos courting OC Bryan Harsin and managed to take him back to Texas with them.

Pease had been up front with Indiana and told them his real desire was to be the OC at Boise State and saw it as a launching pad into becoming a head coach. When he accepted the Indiana position he had no prior knowledge that Harsin would be offered and accept the Texas Longhorn position. Once Harsin moved on the job was offered to Pease, Indiana showed tremendous class and let Pease out of the contract with no penalties.

Since then things have gone from bad to worse for Indiana. Since Brent Pease was hired and left three other new hires have followed suite. Jerry Montgomery of Michigan and Corey Raymond of Nebraska were recent hires that moved on shortly after accepting their positions with Indiana. The most recent defection was running backs coach Jemal Singleton. Hired just last week he has already accepted new position with the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

I don't know what is wrong with Indiana but somethings amiss. I don't know how they can truly field a team if they cant even fill their coaching jobs. Indiana Coach Kevin Wilson seems to be the most snake bitten coach in all of college football.

Whois Johnny McEntee? Why Should I Care?

Yep time for another of those who is this person and why should I care. So first lets find out who is Johnny McEntee. He is the third string back yo quarterback for the UConn Huskies. Now I'm sure that has you all giddy with excitement.

Currently McEntee's claim to fame as a UConn quarterback goes back to the 2009 season when he got into the game for a few plays in a blow out against Rhode Island. Since then he has seen little action and certainly wont grab the attention of any Heisman voters. I doubt any of them have heard of this kid.

So why does this kid stand out and garner attention. He would be the Paul Newman or Tom Cruise from The Hustler movie of quarterbacks. Were he in the Dr. Pepper half time show, he walks away with all the gold. If there was a football answer to basket ball's Harlem Globetrotters, bar none UConn's Johnny McEntee is the football rebuttal.

Charles Woodson: Is He Leaving The Packers?

The Super Bowl is barely in the books and sports analysts are already speculating as to the future of Charles Woodson as a Green Bay Packer. Guess that is the ugly side of the business of pro football.

Woodson has had a remarkably injury free career as a cornerback and his broken collar bone will not cause him to lose a step but age will. Woodson who is currently 34 would turn 35 during the 2011 season. In cornerback years he is close to social security age.

What will Woodson decide what will the Packers decide? He still has good legs and his speed yet the front office does have to look to the future.

I hope that both parties can come to some form of an agreement that would keep Woodson at Green Bay. He has certainly established himself as a team leader. In my opinion the Pack would be smart to keep him as long as they can. Not only as a team leader but as a mentor. Who better than Woodson to train his eventual successor. Your comments are invited.

Boise State Broncos Lose a Budding Football Star

Today Boise State announced the forced retirement of a future running back sensation, Matt Kaiserman. Matt first came to the attention of Boise State fans during the 2009 season in a game against Hawaii. It is the game I will most remember him for and his performance that sticks out over all others in that game.

Kaiserman got in to replace an injured Bronco. He was a red shirt freshman if my memory is correct. He looked pretty good, he was gaining some yards up the middle, making some guys miss and other guys pay for tackling him. He was playing hard nosed in your face football.

There was one drive that stole the show. The Broncos started around their 20 yard line and gave the ball to Kiaserman, he plowed ahead for some good yardage. They just kept giving him the ball and he kept getting first downs. Finally it became apparent, every snap was going to Kiaserman, this was his drive. All the fans knew it Hawaii knew it and the challenge was clear, Kaiserman is coming through the center of the line until you can stop him. The drive ran 10 or 11 plays ending with the K Man getting his first touchdown as a Bronco. It was apparent, this kid has a great future at Boise State.

Later in the season he was injured so we did not get to see him as much as we had hoped. Last season he was sustaining more injuries and saw little action. Today he paid the price, forced retirement. Kaiserman was such a head down go through you type of guy he suffered head concussions. The most recent ended his career, he still suffering from lingering side effects from this concussion.

I hate to lose this kid, he was a special type of running back, yet better the team lose him or he lose his life. How far we have come in the world of football. Ten years ago maybe even less, he would have been expected to report to spring ball. Today teams players and team doctors are more aware of the risks and taking better care of the players, as it should be.

Concussions are no joke and should not be treated that way. Athletes love to compete and are driven to play with injury but not with concussions. Helmet makers are getting into the action. Schutte and other football helmet manufacturers are working hard to develop better and safer helmets. Rules are being made to make the game safer and coaches and doctors are more educated. I hate to see a kid like Kaiserman end his career do to concussions but better his career than his life. Good luck to you Matt in what ever you do. I am one fan that will always remember your special drive against Hawaii and for your sake that has to be enough.

DeSean Jackson is "The Man"

In season fraught with more scandals from players in all the sports, Brett Favre of the NFL. The spoiled brat antics of Randy Moss its nice to see some one from the pro ranks step be the man and knock one out of the park.

This week in a show called The View, they teamed up with Philadelphia Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson and hit the big grand slam.

Earlier this week they had a segment about school yard bullies. The featured guest was a 13 year old boy, Nadin Khoury. Khoury came to the national spot light when videos of the boy being bullied by 7 or so older boys became public. It appears the bullies had plenty of ego and no brains, Of course if they had brains they would not be bullies, these airheads in an effort to promote themselves as legends, posted their cowardly acts on YouTube.

Young Mr. Khoury agreed to appear with Whoopi Goldberg, Barbara Walters and the rest of the ladies in The View to promote more awareness to the problem of school yard bullies.

The show did its homework and found out Nadin is a Philadelphia Eagles fan and that his favorite player is DeSean Jackson. The show obviously contacted Mr. Jackson and told him about his big fan and the courage this kid had to come on national television and stand up to the kids and bullies in general. I do believe the Nadin Khoury earned the respect of many and gleaned a few fans of his own, including DeSean Jackson and two of his teammates.

Jackson sat next to Nadin and literally took the jersey off of his back and gave it to the kid then signed if for him. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house and certainly not in my house. DeSean Jackson is the man and proves once again the old adage, never does a man stand so tall as when he bends down to help another.

Is The Running Game The Packers Achilles Heel?

Sorry Green Bay fans for the most part the picture depicts the Packer running attack. Long gone are the days of the Green Bay Packers simply running over people.

Gone are the days of power backs like Hall of Famers Paul Hornung and Jim Taylor (the first running back in NFL history to gain over 1,000 for five consecutive seasons)would run through and over defenders challenging the defense to stop them.

Missing are the offensive linemen like Jerry Kramer leading the way for great running backs like Elijah Pitts. Pitts scored two touchdowns in the first Super Bowl.

What Green Bay does have is late season God send running back James straks and fireplug of a fullback in John Kuhn. However this does not give the Pack a running game that scares anybody, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers.

What the Packers face in the Steelers is the NFL's best run defense, one that has crushed better running attacks than the Packers will be able to throw at the steel Curtain. Green Bay doesn't need to establish a running game that the Steelers fear just on that forces the respect from Pittsburgh.

What the Pack must do to take full advantage of the talent Rodgers and the receivers bring to the game is establish a running attack that will force the Steeler defense to play honest. If the can get some first downs and develop short and second or third downs via the run, the Steelers will have to respect the run and keep from becoming a one dimensional offense. Anything short of that and Green Bay is in for a long day.

Do the Pittsburgh Steelers Have An Achilles Heel?

As we get closer to game day, we seem to be overloaded with Super Bowl History and trivia. Like who are the most disliked players in the NFL. For those of you that don't know it appears Big Ben has displaced Michael Vick as the most disliked player and hanging in there is Patriots Tom Brady.

However I did read one article that I thought was interesting and relevant to the up coming super bowl. It asks the question, do the Steelers have a weakness an Achilles heel? According to Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports, yes they do.

Cole suggests the weakness is none other than vaunted Steel Curtain itself. His research reveals the way to get over on the Steelers is through the air. Others in the league have told him pass on Pittsburgh, attack them with a relentless aerial assault. Don't get me wrong, if it were that easy every team would have done it and someone other that Pittsburgh would be representing the AFC. In order to make the blitz-happy scheme, run by Hall of Famer Dick LeBeau, look downright average you need more than just to airing it out, you need the right personnel groups to make it happen.

Speed is the key. One NFC coordinator suggests the Green Bay's quarterback and receivers have to react faster than the Steel Curtain or the Pack will get killed. Making the case for that argument, is over the last five years and eight games, quarterbacks who have taken their teams to the Super Bowl have fared well against Pittsburgh. In fact quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Kurt Warner and yes Aaron Rodgers have done well, they averaged a 105.7 passing average accumulating 28.5 points per game with 20 touchdowns passes versus two picks and the Steelers did lose five out of eight of those games.

One AFC coach volunteered the Steelers prefer to hit people and are not a patient lot and are very uncomfortable sitting back in coverage. In fact is the Packers can find ways to avoid corner back Ike Taylor and safety Troy Polamula then they will be facing a less than average secondary.

What all this suggests is to run four and five receiver sets at Pittsburgh. These receivers cannot give up on a play and have to run crisp sharp routes. How the receivers line up will also be key to the Pack success. One coach opined they are best lining up three receivers to one side and just before the snap of the ball sending one in motion to limit the defensive scheme that Pittsburgh can use.

With Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, James Nelson and Jordy Nelson in the line up, Green Bay has the receiving corp to make the strategy work. In the plays offs this stable of receivers combined for 47 catches 620 yards and three touchdowns. Each of these receivers understands the success of the passing game depends on each of them doing their job, helping each other out, getting all them open so Rodgers can get rid of the ball quickly.

Does Pittsburgh have an Achilles heel certainly but knowing and exploiting it is two different things. Can Green Bay puncture the Steel Curtain? We'll see come Super Sunday.

Feds seize sports websites before Super Bowl

The federal government has seized the Web addresses of 10 websites that allegedly live stream sporting and pay-per-view events online, shutting them down just days before one of the biggest televised sporting events of the year: the Super Bowl.

The U. S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of New York, working in conjunction with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, seized the Web addresses Tuesday. The seizure affidavit was unsealed Wednesday.

The websites, which include channelsurfing.net and Spain-based rojadirecta.org, were said to illegally provide access to content from the major professional sports organizations, namely the National Football League, National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League. The sites do not host the pirated sporting content themselves, but instead provide links to other websites where people can access it illegally.

Government officials argue that the sites are not only distributing pirated content illegally, but in the process, are also denting the revenues of the professional sports leagues and broadcasters as well as negatively impacting viewers.

“The illegal streaming of professional sporting events over the Internet deals a financial body blow to the leagues and broadcasters, who are forced to pass their losses off to fans by raising prices for tickets and pay-per-view events,” said Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney in Manhattan. “With the Super Bowl just days away, the seizures of these infringing websites reaffirm our commitment to working with our law enforcement partners to protect copyrighted material and put the people who steal it out of business.”

Fans have increasingly abandoned watching sports games on their television sets, opting instead to watch them on their computers via the Web instead. The shift has jolted professional sports organizations, which are grappling with how to control the growing problem of the illegal streaming of sports games online in real time. The organizations copyright the content of their sports games — from the audio, video, text and images — and restrict others from distributing it without prior written approval.

But the government’s action didn’t provide a permanent solution to the problem. One of the sites that was shut down on Wednesday, ATDHE.net, has already reappeared at a new Web address, ATDHE.me.

The federal government launched a similar campaign last November that shut down 82 websites offering counterfeit goods and digital music and movie content. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and ICE Director John Morton had warned that the two agencies were committed to going after more websites that offer copyrighted content illegally.

Morton repeated that message during Wednesday’s operation.

“This swift action by our Homeland Security Investigations New York special agents and analysts sends a clear message to website operators who mistakenly believe it’s worth the risk to take copyrighted programming and portray it as their own,” Morton said. “We will continue to aggressively investigate this type of crime with our law enforcement partners.”

Boise States Legendary Coach Tony Knap

It is kind of ironic that yesterdays post was about the Boise State Broncos, UNLV Runnin Rebels, Jim Criner, Tony Knap and the new stadium proposed for the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

In today's Idaho Statesman they had a feature story about Coach Knap. In that story I was once again shown how flawed my memory has become. I stand corrected when I said the 1976 meeting between Boise State and the UNLV Runnin Rebels was the last time they played. They did play in Bronco Stadium in 1977 and Boise won handily 45-7. It was the last time Tony Knapp ever prowled the sidelines at Bronco Stadium.

Coach Knap is 96 now and the Statesman reports he moved to a retirement home,Bishop's Place in Pullman, Washington. Sadly the report included Knap suffers from Alzheimer's disease. His wife Mickey, age 90 is with the venerable old coach. In fact the good Lord willing, The Knap's, their children, grand children and great grand children will help Tony and Mickey on April 5th of this year, celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary. Wow isn't that something, 70 years of marriage. That is more years married than most of worlds current population has been alive.

Tony Knap took the reigns of Bronco football in 1968, the first year Boise State became a 4 year school and played 4 year football, it was called Boise College back then.

When Knapp took over the Broncos many fans were worried if he could continue the winning ways of Lyle Smith. Knap did and exceeded all expectations. During his time the Broncos never had a losing season and Knapp took them to their first 10 game winning season. He finished his career at Boise State 71-19-1.

When Knap moved onto UNLV he took his winning ways with him. He coached the Runnin Rebels from 1976 through 1981 retiring at age 66. In UNLV's 40 some years as a football team, Tony Knapp still leads the pack of coaches that preceded him and have followed him with 47 wins.

Knap was known as the Silver Fox because of his silver mane of hair and his offensive genius. While at UNLV he established the four best offensive seasons in school history. The Rebels averaged a record 491.3 yards per game in 1981, 472.1 in 1979, 453.7 in 1977 and 446.2 in 1980. UNLV has averaged 400 yards only four times in the 29 years since Knap retired.

One of Knap's greatest honors came after his stellar coaching career was over. A former player of Knaps from Utah State, Merlin Olsen asked his old coach to induct him into Cooperstown and the Football Hall of fame.

Tony Knap helped make Boise State and UNLV football power houses during his time at each school. Sadly many of today's fans have never heard of the old coach and have no idea what they are missing. It was nothing for a Knap team to throw the ball 40 times per game.

In closing Boise State owes much of its success to Tony Knap and he believed in the Broncos and said something once that left an audience speechless and kind of prophetic when considering most of this last season Boise State was in the chase for the national title game.

One day in Boise, Coach Knap got up before stunned Bronco boosters and media and proclaimed that “ Boise State will one day be a major football power, not just at Division II but in all of college football.”

How did he know that?

That…..is the story of a legend.

Sam Boyd Stadium has been home to the Runnin Rebels for the past 39 seasons and if Neal Smatresk, President of the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and California based billionaire Ed Roski have their way, the Rebels will be a memory.

Sam Boyd is at least two furlongs away from Las Vegas and the UNLV Campus. Built in 1971 with a seating capacity of 15,000, it actually resides in the unincorporated town of Whitney, Nevada. Even though its mailing address is Las Vegas.

I was there in 1976 when Vegas played host to my Boise State Broncos. What a trip it was driving in a caravan of cars from Boise down to Las Vegas. I wont go into details, but lets say over half of the drivers today would have gotten DWI's, self included.

It was the last time these two teams would meet until this upcoming 2011 season. Both teams were division II powerhouses and this was the 6th meeting. Neither team had a win in the other teams house.

In 1974 and 1976 this clash had such drawing power in Nevada each game set a new sports attendance record for the state of Nevada. We were billed as the Boise State Aerial Circus.

What made this game unique was each team had a new head coach. The Runnin Rebels had the wiley veteran head coach Tony Knapp, also known as the river boat gambler and Boise State had Jim Criner. Jim Criner had replaced Tony Knapp as the Boise State coach in 1976 as Knapp had moved onto UNLV.

What I most remember is how long it took to get out to the stadium, it really was out in the sticks. It was a state of the art stadium only 5 years old and like in the pros they sold beer in the stadium.

Today Sam Boyd Stadium plays host to many events and can currently seat 36,800 fans. The stadium has hosted the Las Vegas Bowl since 1992 and in 2005 when nationally ranked Brigham Young came to play in the bowl game, adding additional seats in the open end north end zone, the set a new attendance record of 44,615 the largest crowd in state history to ever see a team sport contest.

Now it appears all that might come to an end. UNLV President Smatresk and Ca. business man Ed Roski want to form a public-private partnership and build a new domed stadium close to The Strip and the UNLV campus. Tomorrow, Tuesday Feb 1st it is expected they will hold a press conference announcing the plans. What they purpose is a new domed stadium and entertainment center that will be state of the art.

What will become of Sam Boyd Stadium is not clear other than it will no longer be home to Runnin Rebels of UNLV.

Boise State Broncos -Titus Young & Austin Pettis

Today the Senior Bowl is played in Mobile, Alabama, a opportunity for many of colleges best seniors to show case their football skills and increase their stock in the up coming NFL Draft. Its a big day for a lot of kids and their families. Of all the post season bowls, like the Shrine Bowl, this is probably the single most important bowl game for the college seniors. Each team is coached by an NFL coaching staff. General managers are there, kids interviewed by different pro teams, this the biggest and final showcase for players to make their case as to why they should be drafted.

What I like about it, is its based in large by talent, not just the name of a conference or school. Players from all over the country are invited regardless if they played for Auburn, Bama,Texas or even smaller lesser known schools like the Boise State Broncos.

Boise State has two players in today's game, Titus Young and Austin Pettis, for us Idaho spud peelers that is pretty big doings. Pettis and Young are the two best receivers to ever play on "The Blue." That is what we call our field, guess cause the field really is blue.

In today's game Young will be wearing the #2 jersey and Pettis #1, just the opposite of what they wore their senior season. I will share a bit of each of their history, to me that Titus is in today's game is amazing in and of its self.

Austin Pettis: Boise States all time leading receiver and receiving touch downs. The scouts really seem to like Pettis. Hi speed and ability to separate are questionable, but he does have good hands and the ability to shield the ball from defenders and the ability to get open. There are two plays by Pettis that just stand out for me, they were awesome. The first one was in his junior year, I think against Tulsa. Pettis ran a fade route and went up for the ball, the defender never turned around. The pass was under thrown. Pettis exhibited his body control, as he made his jump he was able to see the ball was under thrown and folded over the defender and caught a ball for 6 that would have hit the defender square in the numbers.

The second play also took place in his junior year in the Fiesta Bowl. Pettis was coming off a broken ankle and surgery. The guy could hardly walk and barely make a cut. Pettis got into the game and some how got open and made a critical first down catch. I was amazed at his dedication to his team, his ability to some how get open and jump and make that catch.

Mel Kiper projects Pettis as a 4th or 5th round draft pick. Today he has the opportunity to lock that in or even raise his stock.

Titus Young: Young was Boise States speed merchant and deep threat receiver and holds the Bronco record of most receiving yards. To me this is where the Titus Young story gets interesting.

During Young's sophomore year he was suspended for like a game and half at the beginning of the season, seems he needed some attitude readjustment time. Young was barely back in the line up before what happened before got him suspended for the rest of the season and kicked off the team. Coach Pete would not even talk to Titus, but there was some sort of window of opportunity to get back on the team left open.

Most people expected Young to transfer to another school and take the easy way out. I don't know what Pete and his staff have that Young wanted so badly but he stayed and ate what ever humble pie necessary to rejoin the team.

His junior year saw some changes in attitude but he still had that showboat its about me tendencies. Once Titus got in the end zone he had excessive celebration penalties plague him all season, especially when the games were televised.

Titus had three plays I will always remember. During the 2009 Fresno State game played there. Running back Jermey Avery got to the edge and rambled for what have been around a 60 yard score. As Avery approached the goal line a Fresno player slapped the ball from his arms. It looked as if the ball would roll through the end zone giving Fresno a two point safety and the ball. Young followed the play all the way down, jumping on the ball and turning a disaster into a Boise State touchdown.

That same season against the University of Idaho on kick off his guys signaled take a knee. In stead Titus took it out of the end zone and ran it back for a 103 yard touchdown.

The catch in what proved to be a losing effort against the Nevada Wolf Pack.

ESPN's Mel Kiper sees Young as a second or third round draft pick.

Their days at Boise State are over, the memories they created will long endure and I do hope the best for them in pros. Titus, Austin thanks for the memories

Are the Utah Utes & Norm Chow A Good Fit?

Now that it is a done deal and Norm Chow returns to the Utah Utes, where he was an offensive linemen from 1965 through 1967, it begs the question will Coach Chow be a good fit for Utah?

My unqualified opinion is yes, he is the perfect fit for the University of Utah Utes.

1. Utah has left the MWC and joined what is now the PAC12.
Chow gives the Utes instant street cred. Given his years at USC and UCLA the man knows the conference inside out. Chow will be indispensable in the transition from MWC to the PAC 12.

2. Recruiting, Utah now has to recruit at a higher level to try to compete in the new conference. Chow gives them recruiting credibility they need. His offenses are legendary and have won national championships. His ability to develop quarterbacks is second to none. The QB list is comprised of Heisman Trophy winners and Super Bowl winners.

3. His offensive strategies already compliment the type of athletes the Utes have on the roster. They should not miss a beat and should be able to move more quickly to make the transition from MWC competitors to viable competition in the PAC 12.

Don't get me wrong, I think it will take a few years for the Utah Utes to make the climb to the top half of the conference. They are coming into a conference that has better teams, better athletes than what they currently enjoy. Adding Chow to the coaching staff will only accelerate the process.

The Utah Utes could finish the 2011 season around 6th or 7th. They should be able to beat the Colorado Buffaloes who are in total disarray. They should be able to handle the Washington State Cougars who are years away from being the team that went to the Rose Bowl. I do think they can win a close one against Arizona State. Washington without Locker that could be a toss up. However the Huskies head coach and DC Nick Holt know Chow as well as he knows them. If the game is played in Utah I like the Utes in a close one. UCLA has too many growing pains to work through to be a contender in 2011 and Utah should get the W there while the Bruins develop their offense and recruit players that will work in their version of the Pistol.

Given Norm Chows record and reputation I think he is the perfect fit for the University of Utah Utes and is exactly what the doctor ordered to help Utah transition from the MWC to the new PAC 12.

I know, I am late and a dollar short on this post. Last week was rife with rumors that UCLA OC genius Norm Chow was headed back to his alma mater the University of Utah to become the OC for the Utah Utes. Saturday the rumors were laid to rest with confirmation that the job change had taken place.

Actually it was all very poorly handled, the same day the Utah Utes announced they had Norm Chow in the fold as their new OC, slick Rick Neuheisel announced they had a new OC.

Anyone that saw the Bruins play this season knows they had a very poor offense this season far below the Chow standards. Was it Chows undoing at UCLA? Yes but in my opinion it was not his fault. Simply put square pegs and round holes don't work.

Neuheisel has changed the offensive strategies for the UCLA Bruins, they are one of the newest converts to the Pistol Offense. Norm Chow is just a Pistol Offense coach, the athletes recruited to UCLA are not Pistol oriented. It will take time for the Bruins to stock the shelves with players that can operate in the new offensive scheme.

It was time for Chow to leave, the differences in offensive strategies were to wide to bridge. The upside is Chow does get to return to his alma mater and Neuheisel will be able to employ some one that can install and operate an effective Pistol Offense.

Michael Vick: Is The Jury Still Out?

As Micheal Vick continues to play and the quality of his game improves he seems to be winning over more fans and sports writers. As he continues to perform his court ordered community services he appears to be winning over more people outside the world of sports and football.

Recently Vic has taken a couple of more steps in rebuilding his public image and attempting to get more social acceptance. Not to long ago he did some local endorsement work for a company named Woodbury Nissan. Reported is that Vic received no compensation for the commercials done a few months ago and from what I have read, there were no backlashes against Woodbury Nissan.

Things in the business world have picked up for Michael Vic, he has his first commercial endorsement deal since being released from prison. It is not one of the mega deals he enjoyed before his dog fighting arrest and conviction. He did not land a deal with a company like Nike.

Unequal Technologies has inked a deal with Vick the public face of the company. Sources say it is very a very lucrative deal. Unequal is a national company but their product isn't main stream like shoes or Ipods, they are the manufactures of the protective vests that Vick and so many other quarterbacks wear to protect their ribs when playing football.

As yet no commercials have been shot nor has Vick been pressed into service marketing the product. Vick is slowly inching his way into mainstream endorsement deals and will he succeed, will the general public accept him? Until the commercials are run and printed and there is a public response I would have say on Micheal Vick the jury is still out.

Football Senior Bowl 2011

The Mobile Under Armour Senior Bowl will be played this Saturday January 29th at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Kick off is slated for 3pm central standard time on the NFL Network.

The South Team will feature 22 players from the SEC, including Arkansas's Mackey Award Winner D.J. Williams. Missing from the SEC stars are guys like Cam Newton who don't need the Senior Bowl to increase their stock in the upcoming NFL Draft, but there will be stars a plenty from all of your favorite SEC Teams.

As a Boise State fan I am really excited to see two Broncos in the Senior Bowl, I think this is the best we have ever done, placing two in the game. The WAC has five players representing the conference and the Broncos are represented by the two best receivers in Boise State history, Titus Young and Austin Pettis. Also representing the North Team will be an Big Twelve Backfield with four 1,000 yard rushers like Kansas State's Daniel Thomas, from Oklahoma State Kendall Hunter.

Each team is coached by a NFL Team coaching staff. This year the North will be coached by the Cincinnati Bengals Staff and the South by the Buffalo Bills staff.

Each year the Senior Bowl has what they call the Senior Bowl Super Star competition and the winner gets to sing the National Anthem at the game and on the NFL television Network. This years winner hails from Spanish Fort, Alabama and is junior at Spanish Fort High School. Congrats to 17 yr old Rebecca Womack.

Anyhow this years Senior Bowl is laden with talent and future NFL stars and I for one look forward to watching the NFL stars of tomorrow play this Saturday at 3pm Central Time on the NFL Network.

UCONN Huskey Football: Rebellion In The Ranks

Last season was a dream season for the UCONN Husky football program. They were the Big East Conference Champions, the earned a berth to the Fiesta Bowl and an opportunity to play the Blue Bloods of college ball, the Oklahoma Sooners. Sound like the Boise State Cinderella story of 2006. The outcome for the Huskies was different, the Sooners destroyed UCONN and now things have gone from bad to worse.

After a crushing defeat on the deserts of Arizona, UCONN saw its best player bolt for for the NFL Draft. Making matters the coach, Randy Edsall, who guided the Huskies from Division 1AA to ta BCS Bowl, has fled for his "dream job" to Maryland. Sources say he did not even bother to speak to the team before his departure.

Hard to imagine, but from there things got worse. Talk about things going downhill fast, UCONN is the new poster child for the old saying, " just when I didn't think things could get any worse, they did."

Last week UCONN athletic director Jeff Hathaway received a six page scathing letter from Husky supporter Robert G. Burton, CEO of Greenwich, Conn.-based Burton Capital ManagementRobert. This letter expressed in no uncertain terms Burton's chagrin at being left out of the hiring loop and was particularly disenchanted with the hiring of former Syracuse coach, Paul Pasqualoni.

Apparently Burton had a son who played football under the tutelage of Pasqualoni and he didn't care for the coach. Below is a copy of Burton's letter.

Burton informed UConn Athletic Director Jeff Hathaway of his intentions via a six-page letter dated Jan. 19, a copy of which was obtained by The Day. […]

"After we get our money back, you can take our name off the complex," wrote Burton, who also has a luxury box at Rentschler Field and who donated more than $1 million to endow two scholarships at the school.

Burton cited philosophical disagreements with Hathaway and his management style as reasons for his decision to end his involvement with UConn.

"The primary reason (former coach) Randy (Edsall) took another job is because he couldn't work with you," Burton wrote in the letter to Hathaway. "You are not qualified to be a Division I AD and I would have fired you a long time ago. You do not have the skills to manage and cultivate new donors."

According to the letter, Burton called Hathaway on Jan. 3 and asked to be "kept in the loop" with the hiring process for the next football coach. It was "the same process that (former Athletic Director) Lew Perkins had with me when Randy was hired."

Burton also wanted to "provide insight" about coaching candidates who he felt "would be a good fit." Burton wrote that he didn't hear from Hathaway again until Jan. 13, when the process ended.

"I was not looking for veto power," Burton wrote. "Your lack of response on either of these requests tells me that you do not respect my point of view or value my opinion.

Since Burton's son Micheal played for the Huskies back in 1999 and was captain of the football team, Burton has donated over $7m to UConn. Now as the letter implies he wants some of his money back, $3m to be exact.

Adding insult to injury, Subsequently, he's threatened not only to revoke his donation, but also to give up his $50,000-per-year luxury suite ("You already have many other empty boxes at Rentschler. My box will just join the list."), cut off an annual $20,000 donation for summer coaching clinics, transfer all remaining scholarship dollars from football to the business school, and begin training "front line managers" for his company at Syracuse's business school instead.

The timing could not have been worse for UConn when considering donations to the UConn athletic department are reportedly down $9 million from five years ago.

Let this be a lesson for aspiring athletic directors, and managers in all fields, really: When considering major decisions, always, always value the opinion of the guy whose name is on one of the buildings you go to work in. Otherwise, there won't be any more buildings anytime soon, and even if there are, you're not going to be working in them.

Fired Over A Green Bay Packers Tie?

We sports fans are a crazy bunch, that's for certain. Fired over a tie? Isn't that taking things a bit to far? John Stone was fired yesterday from a Chicago area car dealership.

Seems when Stone showed up to work Monday morning sporting a Green Bay Packer tie he was violating company policy. Granted he is in the Chicago area and his dealership had been running promotions involving the Chicago Bears but firing him over a tie seems a bit much even for sports fans.

I have no doubt in my mind, such as it is:}that Mr. Stone is not the innocent he proclaims. He knew his dealership was pro Chicago Bears and that wearing a Green Bay Packer tie would ruffle some feathers. His justification that he wore the tie to remember his late grand mother does hold some substance. When he was asked or told as the case might be to remove the tie, common sense says remove the tie.

Firing the man, to me that sounds a bit over the top. He was insubordinate for refusing to remove the tie and get back to work. Seems to me sending him for a day would have been an adequate form of discipline.

The game is over and the post game drama continues, one guy is fired for wearing a tie. The newest on Jay Cutler is he walked up stairs to a private dining area after the game, making him more suspect for being a quitter.

To me it appears some fans are just taking it to far. Thats my take what is yours?

Chicago Bear Fans: Jay Cutler

I am really disappointed in some of the Chicago Bears fans, pro football players and sports writers for these new attacks on Jay Cutler. Calling him names and accusing him of being a quitter. The guy did the best he could with what he had. Jay Cutler leaving the game with an injury is not the reason Da Bears lost yesterday. The reason the Packers won is they were better coached and the better team on the field. Blaming the loss on Cutler is like some of my fellow Boise State fans blaming our loss to Nevada on our missed field goal, its crap. It takes an entire team to win and it takes and entire team to lose.

Yesterday the Bears had their chances to win and they didn't make good coaching decisions. Two times in yesterdays fame Bear Coach Lovey passed on long field goal attempts and twice it cost Chicago points. From a coaching stand point Lovey left points on the field, so doesn't he share some of the burden for yesterdays loss?

As for his being a quitter, that is absurd, he had a MCL injury, he couldn't plant properly and that effects his passing skills. He did what was best for his team, he left the game rather than be the prefect martyr and play at a level that would hurt the team more than help it.

This season he played behind a weak line that gave him little to no protection which is why he was the most sacked QB in the NFL. His line didnt quit on him and he didnt quit on his team. He just wasnt the man to finish the game. Comparing him to Favre is absurd, Favre played when another man should have stepped in and they would not have lost some of the games they did had Favre stepped back.

Sure we all like the guy like Favre who will play regardless of the pain or the injury but if the playing hurts the team, what good is it? I think sometimes it takes more courage to say no, I am not what is best for the team right now and take yourself out of the game. Lou Gerhig did it for the Yankees. To me that is what team players do, they look beyond themselves and look at what is best for the team.

When NFL players, former players, some fans and sportswriters jump all over a guy without knowing the extent of his injury, that sucks.

Jay Cutler helped get the Chicago Bears into the NFC Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers. It doesn't make sense he would just quit on them when they needed him most. I dont know much about the man, I just know competitors and when the game is on the line, they want to have the ball, take the last shot, they just dont quit and I dont believe Jay Cutler did yesterday. Come on people he is not Roberto Duran saying, " No Mas." That is my take, I would love to hear yours, please feel free to comment.

Green Bay Packers Advance To The Super Bowl

Green Bay earns their 5th Super Bowl appearance. Seems this is the year of the road warriors. Last week I listened to Chris Berman and thought that Chicago would win today. The Packers were just too much for Da Bears.
One thing fun about sports is when the unexpected hero rises to the front. Today #90 had his day in the sun and a pretty good celebration end zone dance. Who would have thought that a guy who calls himself the Freezer would have made winning score, but that is exactly what B.J. Raji did. I loved the replay, to me it showed that pick was not just good luck or something that happened by accident. He faked the rush, dropped back and ran to the outside expecting that slant pass and was ready to make the int. Wow a guy that big and how quick and agile he was. I gotta believe he read that play all the way and boom a pick 6.

Am I wrong thinking Green Bay was just the more physical team today? It seemed as if the Packers defense kept giving them good field position and ultimately won the game?

I like how Caleb Hanie in spite of two picks kept Chicago in the game. I thought he was the only spark of offense they had. That big pass play that set up the Bears first touchdown was as good as it gets. Da Bears seemed to have two seasons this year. The first one a disaster and the second one getting them into the play offs. Today they played alot like the first season. I think they were outplayed and out coached. But thats the beauty of sports, wait till next season Da Bears will be back.

In the meantime congrats to Green Bay you deserve your trip to the Super Bowl.

Green Bay Packers and the NFC

As I indicated in earlier posts I have not really seen much of the pros this season and that my ability to pick a winner was somewhat lacking. I see why the Packers are favored in this game. Their defense is playing awesome, Chicago and Cutler dont seem to have an answer for them this first half. The Pack defensive line seems to be able to put pressure on Cutler at will and the Bears offensive line seems to be able to do nothing to stop the Packer onslaught.

The Packer offensive line is able to protect Aaron Rogders, he seems to have time to read the defense, read down his check and go to his receivers. The Green Bay running game is able to chew up some yards. Mostly the Packer defense has been able to get the ball to its offense with great field position.

There are two halves to football, Chicago needs to make some serious adjustments or like the rest of us, they will be sitting home watching the Super Bowl.

NFC - AFC Championship Games

Today is the day both titles are decided. The AFC features the Jets vs the Steelers. The NDV has the Packers vs Da Bears.

I really have not followed the pros this season so my picks are no better than a monkey throwing darts at a board for stock picks. In fact the monkey might be more educated than me. Last time I saw one of the networks do that show, the monkey actually made them money.

Anyhow I like the Jets, they seem to be a team of destiny, true road warriors. Having knocked off the Colts and the Patriots is no easy chore. And to do it on the road makes it more impressive. Today the face another great quarterback in Big Ben and another hostile home crowd in Pittsburgh, just another day office for the Jets. I pick them in a close one.

Originally I picked Da Bears over Green Bay but Aaron Rodgers does seem to have the hot hand. Da Bears have the home field advantage. Now I see it more as a pickum game. Since I dont favor one team over the other, I think I will just sit back and watch the game and cheer each team on.

Laura Vikmanis: Who Is She

I found Laura Vikmanis interesting and wanted to share her story. She is a 42 year old woman that loves to dance, loves sports and physical fitness. I know she sounds like alot of women in this country but she is a bit unusual. At 42 Laura Vikmanis is the oldest cheer leader in the NFL. During the regular season home games Laura can be seen dancing with the other Cincinnati Bengal Cheerleaders and cheering them on to victory.

At age 39 Ms. Vikmanis found her life wanting and after going to a Bengal game she knew what she wanted. she tried out for the next seasons cheer leading squad and did not make it. According to Vikmanis this make her work harder and by age 41 she became a Cincinnati Bengal cheer leader and the oldest one in the NFL.

Ever hear of Joe Moglia? If you are an online stock trader or follow the industry the odds are you know who is. For those that don't, Joe is the former CEO of TD Ameritrade. He served as a their corporate Big Dawg for 8 years. In 2008 Ameritrade turned in its 6th consecutive record breaking year. While the rest of our country was in fiscal chaos Mr Moglia was making Ameritrade and online trading giant. Then at age 59 he decided that year was the year for him to pass the torch and help pick his successor. After leaving Ameritrade, based in Omaha, Nebraska, he pursued his next career opportunity.

He decided he wanted to be a football coach and arranged and interview with Nebraska Cornhusker Coach Bo Pelini. Naturally Pelini was skeptical, was this another rich guy that was bored and wanted to be part of the sports world? After meeting with Maglia, Pelini has given him an unpaid coaching position with the Cornhuskers.

I found these two stories fascinating, the reasons for what they did intriguing as well as inspiring for myself. So I wanted to share them with you the readers.

I did not get to see much of that game today but there were plenty of high lights on Sports Center. From what I can tell there were plenty of turnovers and just amazing errors by both sides.

The first half turnovers certainly favored the Ravens. The one that really stands out is a Big Ben fumble and players not following up on the play. Cost Pittsburgh big time.

Deep in their own territory with about a minute left in the first quarter and the score tied at 7 Big Ben dropped back to throw a pass. He did the a double pump when a Raven caught him from behind, jarring the ball loose. the ball went forward a couple of yards or so and just lay on the ground.

What happened next is why coaches tell players never give up on a play and play till you hear the whistle blow. Big Ben Roethlisberger was sprawled out on the ground. Ravens player Terrell Suggs, (he hates the Steelers) dancing in the end zone. Pittsburgh Steeler Ramon Foster is seen staring at the ball while Baltimore Raven Jarret Johnson dances past the ball.

During this 3 second interlude from when the ball is dislodged from Rothelisberger's hand only one guy from the Baltimore Ravens figures it out and stays with the play and plays till the whistle is blown. Corey Redding alertly walks over and picks the ball up and runs into the end zone for a easy quick 6 and gives the Ravens a 7 point lead.

Mr. Mayor Plays Second Base

Sports fans are always talking about student athletes, Ken Koch of Loretto, Minnesota takes it to a new level. Koch plays second base for Minnesota's St. Cloud State and this spring when he isn't trying to make double plays or get a hit, he will be wrestling with more complex issues than his class room studies. He will be helping determine if his city, Loretto, should engage in a water contract with larger cities like Minneapolis.

You see Koch isn't your typical student athlete. When he isn't on the diamond or attending classes at St. Cloud State he is working at his other job, part time Mayor of Loretto, Minnesota. Twenty three year old Kent Koch was sworn in for a two year term as Mayor of his home town on January 11, 2011 becoming the first person in this country to serve as a mayor and be a NCAA student athlete at the same time.

This kid is certainly an exceptional student athlete who wears many hats. As captain of the baseball team last season he batted .333 helped his Huskies set a new school record of 41 wins while coming with in one game of playing in the Division II world series.

Koch did not take on running for Mayor as a lark or for the money. Hi annual salary is $2,400.00 or for a fancy office and a parking spot. Loretto is a town of 600 people, those amenities do not exist. He ran for mayor because he loves his town and wants to make a difference.

NFL Star Lawrence Taylor Is Branded

Former NFL star and Super Bowl Champion from the New York Giants Lawrence Taylor is now a branded man. He must wear the scarlet S of sex offender.

LT as the fans new him and the media dubbed him has plead guilty to to sexual misconduct and patronizing a prostitute.

Taylor received a sentence of 6 years probation and must register as a sex offender. No jail time was included in the sentence. Since his arrest on May 6, 2010 LT had been cooperating with several jurisdictions and Federal authorities in human trafficking cases. Taylor's cooperation in these other crimes helped police arrest other defendants including the man "pimping" the 16 year old girl that he paid $300.00 to for sexual favors.

In court Taylor claimed he believed the girl to be 19 as told to him by her pimp and the girl herself. I have no reason to doubt Taylor's accounting of the events. The Ramapo police Chief Peter Brower said after Taylor’s arrest that ignorance of a minor’s age is not a defense to third-degree rape. That with the guilty plea is why Lawrence Taylor must register as a level 1 sex offender. Level 1 means Taylor must check in the with police once a year.

There is no delight in seeing the troubled Lawrence Taylor brought to justice, just sadness. L.T. it seems has always had a troubled life off the gridiron, he has struggled with alcohol and substance abuse problems for years. His attorney assured reporters that his client has been sober for years.

For those that are to young to remember the football hero Lawrence Taylor, he was the linebacker that changed how the position was played while leading his team the New York Giants to Super Bowl Victories in 1987 and 1991.

This year we have seen two football greats forever tarnish their reputations in such a way that what they did off the field will be remembered as much as what they did on the field.

Football's Iron Man Brett Favre is being sued by two former Jets employees and their could be more. He owns that he left another lady that brought his off field exploits to the public eye, unacceptable voice mails. Favre denies sending the lady in question pictures of himself and baby Brett. I don't know if he did or did not. I don't know if because of his celebrity he is a target of some women trying to cash in.

What I do know is Favre and Taylor had substance abuse problems off the field and both say they have overcome these addictions. I know the public can and does forgive these character defects in our sports heroes. I also know they are targets for people to exploit for big cash ins. In the case of Favre and Lawrence Taylor, they appear to the targets, targets of their own stupidity. Stupidity and arrogance have a price and for these too fallen gridiron heroes it seems the bill has just come due and will follow them the rest of their lives.

Sexual misconduct is one thing many fans, sports writers and the public at large will not forgive, it leaves a searing brand on the character of those found guilty and today Lawrence Taylor received his branding as sex offender level 1.

In other sports news Cam Newton has declared for the NFL Draft. Dam, what a surprise, I dont think anyone saw that one coming. Last night Newton and fellow Auburn teammate and defensive lineman Nick Fairly declared for this years draft. Newton is expected to be a first round draft pick.

Stanford promotes from within. Now that all the dust has settled and Boise States Chris Petersen said he is not going to Stanford, the Cardinals have a new head coach. As many predicted they would hire from in and gave the head coach position to OC David Shaw. This should be the perfect fit for Stanford. They guy knows the team and offense inside out. With Andrew Luck returning for his senior year who is more qualified to coach Luck and keep the Stanford Cardinals on track. Congrats Stanford and Coach Shaw.

All speculation of Boise State's head coach are now ended. Today Coach Pete announced he is staying as the head coach for the BSU Broncos. The quote experts had Petersen all but move into Palo Alto.

Boise State and Coach Pete held a press conference this afternoon to end the rumors and to confirm what Bronco football players had been tweeting, that Coach Pease will leave Indiana and return to Boise State as the new offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.

Replacing Pease as receivers coach is coach Prince who had been on the Boise State staff in previous years.

Boise State football fans have cause to celebrate tonight, Pete is staying Pease is back.

Little Sisters of the Poor Rally in Columbus, Ohio

The " little sisters of the poor" have made their presence known in Columbus, Ohio. They held a rally in Columbus, sending a message and taunt at Ohio State University President Gordon Gee.

As you will recall in November Gee stirred up some dust with his remarks he directed and Boise State and TCU. In a speech deriding the mid-major schools; he claimed tOSU's schedule was like playing murderers row and that the schools like BSU and TCU only played the little sisters of the poor.

Now that the season is over, time to take a look at the validity of his remarks. According to Rivals.com sports writer Matt Hinton, who gleaned his information from the Sagarin computer ratings, it seems the Big 10 team with the toughest schedule was not Ohio State but it was the Minnesota Gophers whose toughness of schedule was ranked 38th.

Ohio State checked in with a middle of the pack ranking of 68th while Wisconsin who faced TCU in the Rose Bowl was 71st and TCU was 80th for its strength of schedule ranking. So much for a murders row ranking, would that have to be a top 10 strength of schedule ranking?

Any how Gordon Gee's smack talk did not go unnoticed by fans of the little sisters of the poor or TCU. So they held a rally in Columbus, Ohio, not in the streets as one might think. People marching and waving banners, no theirs was more clever and good smack on the streets to be thrown back at the arrogance of President Gee.

Mr. Gee arrogance has a price: TCU just handed you the bill.
Along with this bill board the "little sisters of the poor" sprang for the use of 20 electronic bill boards around the city congratulating the TCU Horned Frogs for their Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin. Well played " Little Sisters of the Poor" Well played indeed.

University of Texas Football - Bryan Harsin

Over the last few years the Texas Longhorns have really liked what they have seen in the Boise State Bronco offense. So much so they had our OC Bryan Harsin fly out by private jet to Austin. Darn he left a Bronco and came back a Longhorn.

Sure hate to loose Harsin, he was OC and quarterback coach. No one knows the Boise State offense better than Harsin. He played his college football for the Boise State Broncos and has been with Pete since 2006. Making it more difficult for Coach Pete and the Bronco Staff, just a few weeks ago Indiana took our receivers coach, Coach Pease.

Sad thing for BSU is had Harsin gotten the Texas Longhorn job before Pease got his offer, Pease said he would have stayed. He would have replaced Harsin as OC.

Harsin's offenses averaged more than 200 yards both rushing and passing twice during his tenure. In 2006, Boise State produced the sixth-ranked rushing offense in the nation with 214.2 ypg, while in 2010 it has had the nation's sixth-ranked passing attack with 321.1 ypg, which is the fourth-best mark in school history. In that span, the offense has averaged 272.4 yards passing and 187.5 yards rushing per game.

In addition, the Broncos have ranked in the top 12 in pass efficiency all five years and have been in the top 10 in four of those. They led the nation in fewest sacks allowed in 2009 with just five, were third in 2010 with only eight and were fifth in 2008 with 13.

You can see why Boise State will miss him and why Texas wanted him. Harsin will actually be the co Offensive Coordinator for the Longhorns. He will be splitting the duties with former Texas great quarterback Major Applewhite. They will work together to develop an offensive scheme and Harsin will have the duties of calling the plays.

It is the mark of a good football coaches and a good program when the big boys like Texas come calling at your door and courting your coaches.

We were lucky to have Bryan Harsin and will miss him, but as fans we understand the opportunity he has been given and wish him all the best.

So much for those of us that guessed Andrew Luck would leave The Stanford Cardinals early and go pro. He has decided to return to Stanford for his senior year.

Speculation is that this decision could cost him as much as 60 million dollars. He was favored to be the #1 draft pick even over Heisman winner Cam Newton.

ESPN writers report that will the contract negotiations there could be a strike and when the dust settles the NFL might have a ceiling on how much the pros can pay the rookies. Certainly it would be lower than what Andrew Luck and others could earn by coming out this year.

ESPN Sports listed the reasons for Luck's bold decision. I really have to say I admire his reasons. I think the one reason that impressed me most about the character and priorities of kid is he wants to get his degree, he feels that is very important. Sure hope kids in college and down through the high school and junior high ranks listen to him.

Luck's other reasons were he wanted to finish his career with the guys he was recruited with and started his career with at Stanford. Got to admire that kind of loyalty to his teammates and to his school. With out Luck calling the signals next season the Cardinals 2011 season would be in doubt.

His final reason also makes sense. His younger sister is now on campus at Stanford and he wants to be able to spend more time with her. Makes sense as they are both into their adult lives, there will be less time for them together in the future.

This year it seems we have had more marquee players involved in controversy and scandal than I can recall in previous years.

Jeremiah Mosoli kicked off the Oregon Ducks for repeated legal issues, his running back James charged with assault on his girl friend. Cam Newton and his dads selling his services, Even the Bowl season was not exempt from the shenanigans of players when you toss the Ohio State mess into the mix.

Here is Andrew Luck, who should be the instant front runner for the 2011 Heisman award showing principles and character that transcends money. I have become a big fan of Andrew Luck and salute his decision to return to Stanford for his senior year. To me he is the face of what collegiate role models can be.

Rich Rod Is Out At Michigan

The college coaching carousel is in full swing with the Michigan Wolverines firing Rich Rodriquez after three seasons at the helm. The final straw being the Gator Bowl loss to Mississippi State.

Rich Rod's tenure was marred from the beginning the way he left West Virginia to NCAA violations involving to many practices and running practices longer than allowed.

His overall record with the Wolverines 15-22 and each year was getting better. In 2008 Michigan was 3-9 followed by going 5-9 and this year 7-6 with no wins over arch rival Ohio State.

Rodriquez is a strong proponent of The Spread, based on that, many critics wondered if he was a good fit at Michigan. While each season Michigan finished better, his defense was declining. In 2008 they were ranked 67th and this season finished ranked 110th.

What does this mean? Does Jim Harbaugh the former Michigan quarterback have his bags packed and ready to leave Stanford and return to his alma mater? According to The Detroit Free Press, sources close to Harbaugh say no.

Would Michigan be a good fit for Harbaugh, I dont think so. He has a good deal where he is. He has a program rising quickly to the top of the Pac 10 and just notched a BCS Bowl victory last night. I think Andrew Luck returns for one more season if Harbaugh stays at Stanford.

Michigan is alma mater but Stanford for right now is Harbaugh's future if he stays in college football. One suitor down at least two more to go. Stanford hopes for the Harbaugh magic depend if the 49ers or the Denver Broncos can lure him away.

Personally I hope they cant, Harbaugh has been great for Stanford, PAC 10 and college football. My bet is he stays at Stanford.

Stanford Cardinal Football

Last night was a great Orange Bowl win for the Stanford Cardinals. After the break it seemed they could do no wrong. Andrew Luck put on a magnificent display of his football skills. His running skills, passing skills and his ability to read the defense were uncanny. He showed why he was a Heisman candidate.

The defensive line and offensive line for Stanford handily won the battle of the trenches allowing Luck the time to show case his abilities and gave the running backs huge holes to run through. On defense they killed the Hokies with 7 sacks and making TT run for his life while shutting down two fine running backs.

In spite of all that, the future for Stanford is up in the air. Four years ago they were 1-12 last night they finish their season 12-1 and have an uncertain future.

Coach Jim Harbough the architect of the Stanford turnaround holds all the answers and just like the Hokies who had no answers to Stanford, Harbough has no answers for Stanford.

Will he stay or will he leave, thats the question and after last nights game there was no shortage of reporters asking him the question of the hour. His reply was terse and to the point respect the game, respect the process.

I agree with him holding mum last night, he didnt want to overshadow the moment and take away from what his team accomplished. An Orange Bowl win and their first time in the top 5 since the early 1940s.

He will have to decide and what he decides ripples through the Cardinal Team. Andrew Luck was asked if he will go out early in the draft. It is assumed he would be the number 1 draft pick. He was not saying what he has decided or if he has decided. He did say what Harbough decides will have an impact on what he decides.

It is obvious that Harbough is being courted by big names with big pocket books. Given John Elway's new position with the Denver Broncos, I am sure he was there last night to do more than just cheer on his alma mater.

San Francisco would love him to replace fired coach Mike Singletary and see if Harbough can bring magic back to the 49rs like Bill Walsh did at Stanford then with San Francisco.

Michigan, Harbough's alma mater is expected to dismiss Rich Rod this week and of course it is anticipated they will try and lure Jim H back to where he played his college ball.

Stanford has accomplished so much these last 4 seasons, what the future holds no one knows, but the immediate answers reside with Jim Harbough and he isnt talking

Brett Favre: Inglorious End To a Glorious Career

One would have thought, even hoped that last Sunday was final act for Brett Favre. He had a great ride, will be inducted to the hall of fame and was certainly the Irom Man of pro football.

As his football career closes out into the history books, his actions remain front and center stage. In 2008 Favre was with the New York Jets and it seems his tenure there is going to be under more scrutiny. After paying a $50,000.00 fine for failing to co-operate with a NFL investigation for sexual harassment, Faver is being sued.

Two former Jet masseuses Christina Scavo and Shannon O`Toole have filed suit against the against Favre, the New York Jets and Jets personal trainer Lisa Ripa.

I don't know if Favre is guilty or innocent. What I do know is what was once a glorious career is now becoming tabloid fodder and making the rounds of late night talk show entertainment.

Regardless of the outcome of the lawsuit Favre accomplished more on the field than almost any quarterback to ever play the game. His passion for the game is legendary. Pumping his hands in the air and running with excitement on touchdowns was as enthusiastic his firs season as it was this season. Nothing can take that away.

Yet he will be remembered as much for his legal troubles as he will his Super Bowl win, if he is innocent, that is a shame.

Perhaps Saturday Night Live's skit is the final insult to a man that knew how to play the game.

To me the lessons are simple, we put our heroes on huge pedestals and have such high expectations of them that when they prove to he human, we turn on them hard. Some of our heroes cash in on their abilities and develop a false sense of entitlement, whether they like it or not they are role models and should conduct themselves as such. The final lesson, in today's world of texting, tweeting and email, never send out a communication you wouldn't want your mom to see. Once its out there in cyber space, it belongs to the world

Orange Bowl: Dual of the Quarterbacks

The Orange Bowl appeared on paper to be a better game than it was. Part of its billing was a dual between two very good quarterbacks, Tyrod Taylor of Virginia Tech and Andrew Luck of the Stanford Cardinals.

The first half was pretty even with Taylor making fantastic throw on a broken play for a touchdown. Over all neither team did much in the first half. Stanford got 6 on a well executed running play that went 60 yards for the score.

The second half was all Andrew Luck, he was able to demonstrate all of his skills as a passer, runner and his ability to throw on the run. The Stanford line was awesome.

They gave Luck and the Cardinals all the needed. The opened huge holes for the running backs. They used dual tight end and double back formations and had their blocking schemes down pat. The Stanford O-line made the Hokies defense play honest and allowed little pressure on Luck.

They provided him with so much time he was easily able to run through his check off list. His play action pass plays were text book perfect as he stepped into the pocket and delivered picture perfect strikes for scores.

Tyrod Taylor is a very good quarterback and should play on Sunday. Tonight his dynamic duo of running backs was very silent, hardly any yardage for either of them. The Hokies were badly defeated in the battle of the trenches with Taylor being sacked 7 times. Yet he never quit he made some great runs and seemed to have the weight of the offense on his back.

I knew coming into this game that Luck was a gifted QB and is probably one of the best QBs in football this season. He did finish 3rd in the Heisman race. Tonight I know why he is so good, its his natural abilities to throw, run and read defenses and his offensive line.

The line coach for Stanford did a wonderful job preparing his line for tonight. He ran superb blocking schemes, the dual tight ends and power running game provided Luck all the support he needed to have an outstanding game.

Both quarterbacks played the best they could, in Taylors case he just did not have the running game support he needed or the time to pass, and that was due to the Stanford defense. They were on Taylor all night long, his offensive line was over matched out played and out coached.

Even though tonight was to be a dual of two quarterbacks it was really a dual between each teams line and Stanford won on both sides of the ball defeating VT 40-12

President Gee-Arrogance Has A Price

At the end of this last season tOSU President Gee opened his mouth and was less than complimentary about the mid-major teams vying for BCS berths. He said they simply just did not belong at the big dance and there should be no room for them in the BCS Bowls.

He qualified his remarks with statements that playing in the Big 10 week in and week out was like playing murderers row, adding that playing the mid-majors was akin to playing the sisters of the poor.

Arrogance has a price and today Mr. Gee has to swallow his words, though I doubt some one as arrogant as he will do so.

Don;t get me wrong, I have nothing against the Big 10 or the teams that comprise the conference. I do take issue with snobbery, In my opinion, Gee's remarks made him a snob.

Today the Big 10 Conference had 5 teams in various bowl games, the biggest one being the Rose Bowl featuring conference champion Wisconsin against the sister of the poor the Mountain West Conference champion and undefeated TCU.

Mr. Gee how do you explain the Wisconsin loss to TCU? Was it a fluke or did the Horned Frogs out play the Badgers. From where I sat, Wiskey got out played and the better team won.

Adding insult to injury the Big 10 went 0-5 today in bowl appearances. The two teams from Michigan were routed. Seems to me the sisters of the poor are much better than President Gee is willing to concede.

Their last hope for salvaging some dignity in this bowl season rests on the shoulders of his very own Ohio State Buckeyes. The same Buckeyes that are involved in the newest football scandal. Many feel the 5 game suspension of his players should start right now, eliminating the tOSU quarterback and some other key players from the Sugar Bowl. Myself included think the NCAA has shown favoritism to Ohio State. This is based on the actions that they took against a Georgia player who sold his jersey and was immediately suspended for 4 games.

I do believe money was a major factor in this decision, taking away the quarterback and others from Ohio State all but guarantees Arkansas a victory and I think we all know what that would do to ticket sales.

All that aside, Ohio State President Gee was handed a large slice of humble pie today as his "murderers row" got murdered today by some of the sisters of the poor.

The Rose Bowl: Bitter Sweet

The 2011 Rose Bowl is in the books and TCU Horned Frogs have won. Congrats to TCU on another prefect season and capping it with a Rose Bowl victory.

That first quarter it appeared it was going to be a high scoring affair but both teams seemed to settle in on defense for the rest of the game.

As a die hard Boise State fan it was bitter sweet to watch it. During the half I ran to the store and ran into several fellow Bronco fans. They shared the same sentiments of watching and cheering TCU was bitter sweet. They were like me and kept thinking what might of been. But for a bad second half by the Broncos and a great second half by Nevada, it could have been us in the Rose Bowl.

But that is sports, this year it was TCU's turn and time to to have center stage to themselves and be the standard barer for the mid majors.They did it with class and style. Pitt Panther Football: What A Mess

First and foremost, Happy New Year everyone. Hard to think 2010 has come and gone, but it has.

For Pittsburgh Panther fans it has been a tough year in football. They had high hopes of dominating the Big East, the season culminated with the firing of Coach Dave Wannsted.

My experience has been bringing in a new coach revitalizes a team and the fan base. Hope springs eternal that now we get things turned around. Pitt hired its new coach,Mike Haywood, combine that with the new recruiting class and Pitt fans had alot to be excited about.

The end to a disappointing season and firing of the coach just got worse. Pitts new year starts off very badly for them because of their new coach who as of this writing is sitting in and Indiana jail cell charged with domestic battery.

Just when Panther did not think it could get any worse, it has. It is being reported that Pitt recruits are dropping off their list fast. The whole program is in total disarray.

As a BSU homer I have had to listen to years of former Pitt player and ESPN announcer Mark May slam my Broncos. Guess its my turn to stick a jab at Mayday.

The following came from a Boise State message board toasting the mighty Mark, who loves to toast the non AQ schools.

"Clearly, this is a smear campaign, paid for by non-Automatic Schools like Boise State or BYU..."

Pitt is in serious trouble and as of yet has made no comment. There really is nothing they can say, they have scant information to work with. Their legal position whether to fire or not fire has got to be tenuous at best. They really are in a no win situation.

Harmon Killebrew

The name Harmon Killebrew won't register with most people reading this blog, unless you were a baseball fan in the 1960s.

Harmon played for the Washington Senators that later became the Minnesota Twins. He hailed from the small town of Payette, Idaho, not to far from where I grew up in Boise.

Around here he was a legend, wow, a guy from Idaho playing pro baseball, for us spud peelers that was a pretty big deal. Just like Jerry Kramer another Idaho playing for Green Bay.

Harmon is in his 70s now living in Arizona and he is sick. He has been diagnosed with a form of throat cancer. It is sad for me to see this part of life, my childhood heroes getting old and getting sick. Like most I still tend to think of them as they were, young and invincible.

I would ask those reading this blog to take a moment and say a prayer for Harmon Kellebrew. He was and is always a class act and a gentlemen. I met him once at an autograph singing back in the early 60s he could not have been more gracious.

In his day the heroes were heroes on the field and you seldom heard of scandals like you do in today's sports world.

Dont Hate The Bird-Hate The Game

That was posted earlier on the net along with other disparaging remarks. Sadly they were talking about the Independence Bowl played in Shreveport, La.

Part of the part of the pregame show included the Air Force Academy releasing its mascot, "The Bird" for a pregame flight around the stadium. After his release and pre-approved was done the bird took liberties and went AWOL.

I did not see the game featuring Air Force and Georgia Tech and from all reports I did not miss anything. Some speculated the bird knew what a snoozer it would be and that is why he sought out the night life of Shreveport circling the city.

Apparently the birds AWOL took up to three quarters of the game before he was recaptured and brought back for to Independence Stadium for the post game festivities.

In what turned out be as boring a game as predicted, you have two offenses using the triple option, they produce good running attack but little offensive fire works, Air Force won in a squeaker by a score of 14-7. So as the man said, dont hate the bird for flying the coupe hate a game that was so boring even the Air Force mascot took flight.

Little Caesars Bowl

Tonight's Little Caesars Bowl featured The Toledo Rockets from the MAC Conference and Florida International University's Golden Panthers from the Sun Belt Conference. I must admit I was surprised to see FIU in a bowl game. My most recent memories of FIU was seeing lopsided scores in the many body bag games they have played in recent years.

I full expected Toledo to take the Golden Panthers to the woodshed. Not that I had anything against FIU. We played Toledo this season and it looks better on the resume if teams you beat win their bowl game.

Going into the half it looked as if picked this one right with Toledo leading 21-7. Midway through the 3rd quarter Toledo kicked a field goal and created what appeared to be an insurmountable 17 point lead.

On the ensuing kickoff things got interesting. Receiver T.Y Hilton took the kick off and returned it 89 yards to the house cutting the Rocket lead back to 10 and giving the Golden Panthers the much needed spark to keep the game close.

The momentum did seem to change of the Hilton touchdown return. Three plays into Toledo's kick off return drive the Panthers struck again. Aided by a Rocket penalty the FIU Panthers were able to get to the Toledo 17 and from there Darriet Perry made it a 3 point game.

The rest of the third quarter played out with little action either way. Later in the 4th quarter Hilton made his presence felt again as he caught the go ahead touchdown for the Golden Panthers making it a 31-24 score and their first lead in their first bowl game appearance in school history.

Toledo did not role over and play dead, they drove down the field and Terrance Owens capped the drive with a touchdown, bringing the Rockets within one point and about 1:16 left on the clock. When Toledo punched it in the coach left no doubt as to the Rockets intent as he held up two fingers, they were going for the win. Toledo scored the two point conversion and took a one point lead.

The ensuing kick off was a squibb kick that FIU was able to return to almost the 50 yard line with over a minute left on the clock and needing very few yards to get into field goal range.

FIU found themselves in a make of break 4th and 17 and 48 seconds on the clock. It reminded me instantly of my Boise State Broncos who in the 4th quarter had a 4th & 18 with 18 seconds to go, trying to tie the game.

Like Boise State the Golden Panther were successful in converting the game deciding down. It was very close, by less than a yard T. Y. Hilton had risen to the occasion again. The Panthers were able to get more yardage after the new first down and kick the winning field goal leaving no time on the clock, thus winning their first ever bowl appearance. Florida International played their first college football game in 2002 and only became a FBS team in 2005. They are the fastest team to ever go from D1AA to D1A status. Congrats to both teams for great seasons and to Florida International University for making it to a post season bowl in 5 short years and for your first of many bowl victories to come.

17th Christmas

I was not sure if I wanted to post this but have decided to do so anyhow.

This Christmas day marks 17 years since I had my last drink. For me it is the Christmas present that keeps on giving. Because of the decision back in 1993 I can look forward to more Christmas days, knowing my triplet nieces better and maybe even dance at their weddings. They are only 11 and I am 61 but who knows.

The effects from Boise States missed field goal in the closing seconds against Nevada have apparently found their way to the NCAA.

The controversy is about the height of the Nevada goal posts. There is a contingency of fans who swear Brotzman's first kick was good and then of course those that say no, he missed it.

The cause for the debate is centered around the height of the Nevada goal posts. They are not the standard 20 foot high posts like most colleges and the NFL. Had they been that height, there would be no controversy.

The NCAA is looking at next season making all college goal posts a mandatory 20 ft high. A little late for the BSU Nevada game but it certainly makes sense to have a standard goal post height for every college football field.

Kyle Brotzman's Swan Song

Kyle Brotzman has had more press than any field goal kicker this season or for any season that I can remember. It started with his missed 26 yard field goal attempt with one second left that would have preserved Boise States perfect season instead of sending the game into overtime. Minutes later Brotz misses a 29 yarder and Boise lost to Nevada in overtime, dashing their hopes for the Rose Bowl.

This week was another week of alot of pregame press focused on Brotzman and how the Utah contingent were taunting him even during the game with signs that read wide right.

Tonight in the Maaco Bowl held in Las Vegas Kyle played his final collegiate game, needing only three points to become the all time leading scorer in college football history.

A year ago in the Fiesta Bowl against TCU, the team that replaced Boise for this years non AQ and is playing in the Rose Bowl, Brotz was a hero. Midway through the 4th quarter deep in Bronco territory Brotz faked the punt and calmly threw a perfect strike to Kyle Effaw for a first down that set up the game winning score.

This year in the first half Boise tried another fake punt against the Utah Utes. Brotzman took the snap and pitched the ball to Austin Pettis who came from the left wide receiver slot. Brotz then circled out left and became the primary receiver. He as wide open, had a sure first down and nothing but green grass in front of him. He took his eyes off the ball and tried to run before he made the catch, dropped pass.

I began to think this is the most snake bit kid I have ever seen. Trailing 3 to 0 Boise finally scores in the second quarter and Kyle comes to within one point of tying the all time scoring record. Later in the first half Boise is in has to attempt a field goal. Twenty nine yards from hero or goat Brotzman lines up and finally breaks his three field goals missed streak and puts it right down Broadway.

I think even the Utah players and fans were glad to see this kid get the monkey off his back and become the all time leading scorer in college football. Even the announcers Herbstreit and Musburger talked more about he made than he set a new record.

Overall Brotzman had a mixed night, he went 2 for 3 on field goals, one was blocked and had a dropped pass. However Utah was held to just 3 points and Brotzman had a role in keeping them out of the end zone. He had two touchdown saving tackles on special teams.

Over all it was a fitting end to great career at Boise State, he will be missed and I do hope he gets his shot at pro ball. Than you Kyle Brotzman for the memories and all you did for Bronco Football.

The Tale Of 2 Quarterbacks

Tomorrow night Boise State and the Utah Utes tee it up in the Maaco bowl in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is one the more popular non BCS Bowl match ups. ABC is sending the A team of Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit.

Boise State will start Kellen Moore who finished 4th in this years Heisman Race. Moore is undoubtedly one of the best quarterbacks in college football today. He has over a 71% completion rate with 5 picks and very few sacks.

Outside of Utah little is know about back up quarterback Terrance Cain who will be starting for the Utes. He is stepping in for the injured Jordan Wynn who has had shoulder surgery.

Personally I think this gives Utah an edge, the unknown quantity factors into this game. Boise has been able to see little tape on this kid and so he will be more challenging to defend against.

Here is why he will be challenge. When he left high school he moved onto Blinn Jr. College where he preceded Cam Newton. his first year at Blinn was the kind of season every QB dreams about. In 2007 he started his collegiate career with stunning numbers, he set a national Jr College record by completing 71.1 percent of his passes. He kept his foot on the accelerator and in 2008 he led the nation with 3,138 passing yards.

In 2009 he left Blinn to join the Utah Utes and became their starting quarterback and had a strong 7-1 record and was still benched in favor of Jordan Wynn.

This season Cain started against New Mexico and UNLV and had a quarterback rating of 24 points higher than Wynn.

Perhaps the game against BYU is why Wynn was chosen over Cain. Coming into the game in relief of Wynn, Cain had his worst performance as a Ute. He went 2-7 and had two picks.

What he does bring to the table more so than Wynn is his legs. During his career at Utah Cain averages about 50 rushing yards per game, where as Wynn has never rushed for more than 15 yards in a single game.

What Cain brings to this game tomorrow night is a back up who is as good as most starters in the country plus a good set of legs that can make a defense pay. Tape wise he is the unknown quantity but his record precedes him and Boise State has said they need to be ready and not give him any openings to control the game.

Cool Trick Play Wins Class 5A Division I state championship

Ranked #37 Pearland High (Texas) faced the #5 ranked Eules Trinity High (Texas) for the state championship. Even though Pearland was undefeated they were the underdog to the Trinity Trojans, one of the countries most balanced and feared high school football teams.

The Oilers wanted to get a fast start on Eules and keep their foot on the gas peddle so they pulled out all the stops in the title game, including a tried but true trick play if it can be sold.

Leading 14 to 10 in the third quarter the Trojans called " The Dead Man" play. Pearland sold the play so well that quarterback Trey Anderson was able to throw a 54 yard scoring strike to wide receiver Sam Ukwyachu making it a 21-10 game.

It really was the kind of play the Oilers needed to put a wide gap between themselves and the Trinity Trojans who never gave up and came roaring back to make it a 28-24 game.

Sounds like both teams gave it their all and are to e congratulated for a fine season and great game.

This year we have been told about two moving stories involving Boise State Football Fans. Stories that make it more than a game. Today we had a link to the story about the blind man and how much he depends on Bob Belher to be his eyes when he broadcasting a Bronco Game. We were told about how KBOI invited he and his wife in the broadcast both and made the Utah State Game one he and his wife will remember all their lives. How she got to hug Kellen Moore, the autographed helmet for the grandson and how Coach Pete took them into the locker room.

Saturday November 6. 2010 we got see Boise State, Coach Pete and Bronco Nation welcomed a new assistant coach to the Bronco Staff. For the first time ever, we saw our team walk out of the tunnel instead of sprinting. There was the Bronco player on the left carrying the hammer and on the right, hand in hand walking with him was the new assistant coach and 11 year old boy who wont be with us long. I was never more proud to be a BSU fan then at that moment. My eyes filled with tears seeing the two of them walking out onto the Blue.

As I read tonight's story about the blind man, it opened my eyes. Boise State and all the football teams across the country are more than just a game. When given the opportunity they fulfill dreams, make people feel special. Like a couple of years ago Pete Carroll and the USC Trojans and the youngster they adopted who lost all his vision. Pete never stood taller than in the film clip they showed of he and their kid walking hand in hand off the USC bus.

Remember Charlie Weiss? His first year as head coach at ND, he was given that rare opportunity to touch a young persons like in way that stole your heart. His involved a young boy dying of cancer. Midweek of game week Weiss went to the kids home and visited him. He brought the kid lots of ND gear and a ball, the kid was too weak to lift it.

They talked for over an hour and the kid had a play he had drawn up for the Irish and asked Weiss if he would run it. Wiess agreed to run the play and told him when in the game he would do so. Friday night before the game, the youngster died, he never got to know if ND ran the play. Weiss true to his word called the play deep in their own territory under the shadow of the goal posts and it went for a first down.

As fans we are so involved with the team, how its performing that sometimes we forget, its more than a game, its the opportunity to touch lives in a deep and profound way, like Bluka getting the South End Zone banner to the assistant coach.

All teams do the things that Boise has done, its just wonderful to know the stories and things that the Broncos have done, making it more than a game. Go Broncos

Andy Reid Is Looking Pretty Smart

Remember last summer when Andy Reid and the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to their hated nemesis the Washington Red Skins? People were all over Reid for the trade. Maybe he was ahead of the curve on that one.

Today it was announced that Donovan McNabb has been benched for Sunday's game in favor of Rex Grossman. Eight months ago McNabb was to be the new savior of the Red Skins, now he is third string.

From what I am reading, this benching is just the tip of the ice burg for how bad things have gotten in the Washington locker room.

Player wishing to remain unnamed to avoid the Shanahan retaliation are very angry over the benching. The see it scapegoating McNabb for poor coaching. Yet McNabbs numbers this season have not been stellar, (3,377 yards, 14 touchdowns, 15 interceptions) and he constantly misses easy throws that can be the difference between wins and losses.

Just based on McNabb's numbers it appears Andy Reid was right in trading Donovan to the Skins, weakening the competition. However it appears from what players are saying there is more to it than that.

According to NFL.com's Jason La Canfora, Red Skin players are accusing OC Kyle Shanahan of deflecting blame from himself onto McNabb.

They are saying the father son egos are out of control and that they are blaming everyone but themselves for the problems plaguing Washington.Regardless of who is right, it is a house divided.

Is Grossman the answer to tomorrows game, most likely not. His starting may be the signal that McNabb will be looking for work for the 2011 season.

Earlier this season Shanahan benched Donovan and then Washington signed him to a contract extension before he returned to the starting line up. Dont look for that to happen this time around. In the new contract extension Washington put in enough language to be able to trade McNabb or release him at the end of the season and only have to pay him $3.75 million. Shanahan did tell McNabb he may not be invited back for next season and his benching sets up a trial run for Grossman and promotes John Beck to role of back up QB.

What is sounds like is the entire Redskin camp is in total disarray and bringing McNabb over to Skins has just highlighted the much deeper issues plaguing Washington. Perhaps they need to do some major housing cleaning starting with team Shanahan and down through the ranks. I dont know what the answer is but I do know the Red Skins are not the team they used to be.

How To Be A Linebacker

The linebacker positions are the heart and soul of the defense. More responsibility lies in their hands than any other defensive position. They are required to back up the defensive line and fill gaps to stop the run and fall back into pass protection.

In this article we will discuss the basics needed to play linebacker. We will provide the names for each of linebacker positions, where to line up, the gap assignments, the stance, how to tackle and finally how to read the play.

A. Linebacker Names

1. SAM: Strong side linebacker. SAM lines up about 5 yards behind the LOS on the outside of the tight end in the C gap. Primary duty is to stop the run.

2. Mike: Middle linebacker. Mike lines up about 5yards behind the LOS and can be on either side of the center. He is the quarterback of the defense and calls the defensive plays. He is responsible for the A gaps on each side of the center and for pass protection in the middle.

3. WILL: Weak side linebacker. WILL lines up about 5 yards deep and on the outside of the offensive tackle and is responsible for the C gap. He primarily is in pass coverage.

B. Stance

In order to create the opportunities for success at linebacker a well balanced stance is a must for the player to be able to fend off blockers, tackle effectively and be able to drop back in pass protection.

C.Base Stance:

1. Feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart toes pointed up field. This allows the linebacker to take a lateral or directional 8 to 12 inch first step with the play side foot.

2. The weight should be on the balls of the linebackers feet with his knees bent over his feet and his shoulders over his knees. The head should be straight up and eyes locked onto the quarterback. Arms relaxed off his knees.

3. From this stance the linebacker will be able to wrap up the ball carrier and drive through him to make a solid tackle.

D. Reading the Play

Reading the play is key for the defense stopping the offense and getting back
possession of the ball.

1. Watch the quarterback and see if he hands off the ball and to who, if handed
pursue the ball carrier.

2. If it is a pass play, drop back into pass coverage, watch the quarterbacks eyes and move in the direction he intends to throw the ball for pass protection. Break on the ball once it is in the air.

In conclusion a linebacker must be more than just strong and a good tackler. Linebackers have to be versatile athletes who can read plays quick, react quickly and have good speed forwards, backwards to cover pass plays and side to side for play pursuit.

Streaks Are Meant To End-Records Are Meant To Be Broken

For the first time since September 27,1992 Brett Favre will be on the bench with a clip board in hand watching his team play. Tonight when the Minnesota Vikings play the New York Giants, Favre will not have an active role on the field.

Favre's record, excluding play off games, is a starting quarterback for 297 consecutive games over 19 seasons. That streak ends tonight,leaving a new NFL record to be broken.

Unlike Baseball's iron man Cal Ripken who chose to sit out a game, Favre was forced to sit out tonight after taking a vicious hit from Buffalo linebacker Arthur Moats just three snaps into the Viking - Bills game.

Regardless of opinions formed about Favre over these last few seasons it is time to just look at what he has done, 297 consecutive regular season games, amazing.

What makes Favre's accomplishment so rare is the average NFL career spans less than 4 years, yet Favre lasted 19 seasons.

To put more perspective on this Peyton Manning is the current player with most consecutive starts behind #4. Manning has 205 starts and could catch Favre in 2016.

But has anyone played the position with the passion and flare Brett has exhibited through out his career? How many times have we seen BF take off running to get that first down, take on linebackers head on instead of sliding. How many times have we seen him get off the turf battered and beaten with torn muscles, concussions and broken bones only to start the following week.

Former Detroit Lions defensive tackle and football great Alex Karras once said quarterbacks should where a skirt in the backfield. Karras never met Favre at least on the gridiron. Karras was a 4 time pro bowler who also made the 1960s all NFL team who played from 1958 to 1970.

Tonight marks the passing of an era the Brett Favre consecutive starts streak leaving new record to be broken. I dont know if it will be Manning or some one else, I just hope it is some one who has the same passion for football and the same flare that belongs to the once invincible Brett Favre.

How To Train Players In The 4-3 Defense

Basics Of The 4-3 Defense

The 4-3 defense was invented in the 1950’s and is one of the oldest most effective football defenses. This article we will focus on the basic formation of the modern era 4-3 and each player’s role. Beginning with the base formation, you can effectively modify the defense to run stunts, blitzes and different pass coverage schemes for situational downs.

Down Linemen:

1.Defensive End: Uses a 7 alignment of the outside shoulder of the tight end. His duty is to fill the c gap between the tight end and strong side offensive tackle and turn plays to the inside.

2.Defensive Tackle: Uses a 3 alignment lining up on the outside shoulder of the strong side guard and fills B gap. The best defensive tackles are the ones that can fill both A and B gaps, who can push the pocket or drop back and fill the gaps between the guards and tackles.

3.Nose Tackle: Uses a 0 or one alignment lining up between center and the weak side guard. He must be exceptionally strong and durable fighting off blocks and stuffing the run.

4.(REB) Rush End Backer or Weak Side Defensive End: Duties are to keep the running attack between the tackles and attack the weak side tackle while rushing the quarterback.

Linebackers:

1.SAM: Strong Side Linebacker, lines up 5 yards deep in a 5-6-7 alignment on the outside of the tight end. SAM remains responsible for the C gap and making sure nothing gets outside the defensive end. Since the tight end can be lined up on either side to the center the SAM and WILL must be able to switch sides.

2.Mike: Middle Linebacker is usually 5 yards off the LOS and is the quarterback of the defense calling the defensive plays. He must be strong enough to fight off blocks and quick enough to fill strong side A gap and the weak side B gap. Mike is in a 2i alignment on the out side shoulder strong side of center. Besides attacking the run between the tackles he must be able to protect the middle from crossing routes and under coverage passes.

3.WILL: Weak Side Linebacker: Is 5 yards off the LOS and if there is only a single tight end and no slot back he is a 5 alignment off the outside shoulder of the weak side tackle covering the B & D Gaps. If there is a slot or two tight ends the WILL lines up in a 7 alignment and is responsible for weak side D Gap. If it is a pass play WILL is responsible for covering the #1 receiver on the curl route, if there are two receivers he must force the #2 receiver outside past the hash mark.

Secondary:

1.Corners: Line up about 5 yards off the receiver with an outside shade alignment. (out side shade, off the outside of the receivers nose) The corners don’t take off on the snap of the ball, instead the want to remain outside the receivers and jam them towards the inside and forcing them to run up field towards the safeties. If the ball is not in the air on the third step the turn and go with the receivers for 15 yards to help the safeties protect against the long ball. Corners are also looking for the ball on the run and try to force the play inside where they have the back up of the linebackers.

2.SS: Strong Safety lines up 10 to 12 yards deep off the tight end. The primary duty of the SS is run support with the SAM. Pass plays have the SS playing a cover 2 and is responsible for the long pass and receivers on his side of the field. He can play as a free safety here and breaks on the ball only when it is in the air. He must keep everything in front of him.

3.FS: Free Safety lines up 10 – 12 yards of the LOS between the #1 receiver and the offensive tackle. Unless he is cheating up to blitz on short yardage situations he is responsible for deep ball pass protection.

In conclusion the 4-3 defense is a solid defense that schemes well against all offensive schemes. With each player filling their assignments the offenses do have to earn their yards. Congrats to Will Muschamp

Will Muschamp is now the former Defensive coordinator and head coaching waiting from the Texas Longhorns to the new head coach for the Florida Gators. Muschamp will replace Urban Meyer who last week resigned as coach of the Gators.

This appointment makes Muschamp at age 39 one of the youngest head coaches in college football.

He does have a very impressive resume:

Cam Wins The Heisman Trophy

It comes as no surprise that Cam Newton has won the Heisman Trophy. What is surprising was his being left off the Football Association of Americas All-American Team. Kellen Moore won those honors.

Newton is by far the best player in college football this season and based on those attributes he is a worthy recipient. However based on all the criteria such as integrity, Newton falls below the mark and should not be this years Heisman winner.

As you recall he transferred out of Florida because he got caught cheating in his classes, then there was the issue of his having a stolen laptop he through out the window when the police came knocking at his door.

Then there is the pay for play issue. His father admits he tried to get money for his kids football talents, even got zoning issues for his church resolved based on the monies he expected to receive from selling Cam's services. He and Cam claim Cam did not know this.

Cam Newton winning the Heisman diminishes the Heisman as much as Barrack Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize for getting elected President. Even Obama said he had done nothing to deserve the award.

In my opinion Newton has been laughing at everyone all the way through this process. He appears to think it is all a big joke and that he is smarter than everyone else.

In his acceptance speech he threw salt in the wounds of those offended by his and his fathers actions, "My parents do so many things behind the scenes that nobody knows about. " We do know Cam, thats the problem we know way too much.

Then there are the Kellen Moores and Andrew Lucks of the world, the guys who play it straight, they get left in the dust by guys who cheat like Cam Newton.

I think in a few years the straight ones will have the last laugh on Auburn and Cam Newton when like Reggie Bush, Newton has to return the trophy. By then neither he or Cecil Newton will care. Newton will have so much money from the NFL it wont matter to the Newton family, and sadly that is what is about, the money.

Boise State vs Utah Utes

Game day is 11 days away and both sides are talking smack. The Utes defensive end has already guaranteed victory over the Boise State Broncos.

Boise fans have really taken offense at the guaranteed victory and remind the Ute fans of ancient history, the 2006 game.

Personally I think players who publicly guarantee victory are providing locker room material for their opponents and wonder if that is the smart thing to do.

I recall each time we have played the Utes they were convinced we were little brother and that they were going to show us a lesson.

The game should be a tough hard fought game. Boise is missing its key linebacker Byron Hout who is very effective at plugging the middle and shutting down the run.

Utah is missing their starting QB but from what I hear the back up is a very talented kid, that helps Utah, Boise knows very little about the back up.

Any how smack talk amongst the fans is part of the fun of college football, providing it doesnt cross the line and becomes personal insults.

Utah Utes this is just a friendly reminder of the 2006 the game you would like to forget, just as much as I want to forget what happened to us in Reno this year.

How To Play Linebacker In The 4-3 Defense

The position of linebacker of was invented and introduced to college football in the early 1900’s by Michigan Head Coach Fielding H. Yost. (1901-1923 1925-1926)

Since the positions introduction back then, the role of linebacker has taken on many names and duties in the game of football.

In this article we will focus on the role of linebacker in the 4-3 Defense and identify the different names for the different linebacker positions.

Types of Linebackers:
1.Outside Linebackers
a.Strong side or Sam Linebacker
b.Weak side or Will Linebacker

2.Middle Linebacker or Mike

Role of Outside Linebackers:
1.The Sam is usually lined up opposite the tight end or which ever side has the most players. The Sam Backer must be strong and quick. Often he is called upon to tackle the running back after fighting off the block from the tight end. His strength is important in fighting off blocks from tight ends and running back when blitzing on pass plays. He must be able to play like a safety and be able to cover the tight end in passing situations as well as quick enough to drop back in zone coverages.

2.The Will Linebacker must be the fastest of the linebackers. The main function of this position is pass protection. The weak side linebacker lines up wide and at the same depth as the Mike. Frequently the weak side backer covers the back coming out of the back field in man on man coverage but must the reads and be fast enough to drop back and cover the weak flat or hook/curl areas in zone coverage.

3 The Mike is the quarterback of the defense. In the 4-3 Defense he must be a jack of all trades yet he must be the skilled and pivotal of the three linebackers. The Mike must be quick enough to cover the ground between the tackles. He must be able to spy the quarterback and be able to drop back and protect the middle of the field on pass pass protection.

In conclusion linebackers are the heart and soul of the 4-3 defense. They must be able to pick up reads quickly be quick and strong. The middle linebacker is the quarterback of the defense and as he goes so goes the defense.

What Were They Thinking?

Amidst the Bowl Selections and college players getting the different awards we have other players grabbing headlines for being air heads.

I know it seems like I focus on the air heads, but it is my hope that any young people reading my blog will see that know matter how smart they think they are, air heads get caught.

We have seen a player from Iowa get caught for having a drug house. the money he made will never equal what a college degree. He might have been NFL quality, but if he goes to prison, what difference will it make? I doubt the NFL will have much interest in a kid who was doing time and unable to keep his skills up to par. After all he would still remain an unknown quantity.

Washington State has two players in hot water over being pot dealers. How smart can they be, throwing away a college education for quick cash, throwing away an chance to maybe one day play in the pros.

Now UConn has an 18 year old red shirt who has exceeded the stupidity of all the mentioned above. This kid will be branded with the scarlet letters of kddie porn man. Yet he is still a kid himself. He most likely will do time, the closest he will get to playing football will be in the prison yard.

At 18 he will probably have to go into protective custody to be protected from predatory inmates. Eighteen and his life is forever scarred if not ruined, he threw so much away for child pornography.

The arrest of the UConn player happened on Wednesday and he admits to having 20 kiddie porn movies and pictures of children between ages 8 and 15 on his computer. He is under a $75,000.00 bond.

To ask what was he thinking is a waste of time, he wasnt.

It truly saddens me when I see young people throw their futures away over such dumb things. I post what they do in hopes some one who is on the verge of making bad decisions will rethink what they are doing or about to do and make better choices.

No Huddle Offense: What Are Its Advantages?

The No Huddle is more an offensive strategy that an offense per say like the Wing T. However it does offer many advantages. This article will focus on the advantages over the defense create by using a no huddle offense.

Using this offense allows the offense to set the tempo of the game.

1. The offense can have better clock control by running more plays than a conventional huddle offense.

2. Quickly getting to the line of scrimmage lets the offense take control of the defense. They limit the substitutions the defense can make. The defense does not want to get caught with too many players on the field at the snap of the ball.

3. Limiting substitutions limits the defensive play calling. The defense is held to its base defensive strategies, taking away stunts and blitz packages.

4. With the defense using more its base defense the quarterback can get easier reads and make changes at the LOS. An example of this is if the ball side defensive tackle is lined up wide, the quarterback can change the play at the line to an inside trap play.

5. The No Huddle Offense can be used with multiple formations. Whether a team uses the Pistol Offense, Shotgun or pro sets the no huddle can be part of the game plan. Using the multiple formations in a predetermined sequence keeps the offense on the same page and limits the defense even on certain down and distance plays,

An example of this might be to run an I formation, followed by an I with twins left and then an unbalanced I right. Using this strategy gives the opportunity to limit the defensive packages it faces while allowing offense to be able to run many of its offensive plays from the formations.

6. Teams with well conditioned athletes benefit from this offensive strategy later in the game when the defense is out of gas, the better conditioned team does take over game.

In conclusion the No Huddle Offense offers many advantages over the conventional huddle offense. Run properly, the offense can control the tempo of the game and the defense by lining up at the LOS after each play. The offense can control the defense more even in situational downs by using multiple formations. Finally the team better conditioned and accustomed to the faster pace of the No Huddle is in better shape to take full control of the game in the later part of the game.

No Huddle Offense: 5 Coaching Tips For Using It

The no huddle offense is a football scheme designed to increase the offensive tempo of the game and wear down the defense. Run properly the offense will be able to run more plays while limiting the defenses ability to substitute.

The offense goes to the LOS and calls its plays there instead of going into a huddle then running up to the line of scrimmage. Plays can be signaled in from the sidelines and called while lined up or even changed with audibles. The play can be on a silent snap count or on an audible.

The key to a successful no huddle offense is preparation by the team and the coaching staff. If done properly the offense will have more time on the clock and be able to run more plays while forcing the defense to stick to its base defense attack. If not executed well the offense can experience penalties finding themselves in a hole.

1. Have 10 to 20 pre-scripted plays that you have run in practice. Plays that cover different situations for different positions on the field. Clock conservation is achieved by including short five to ten yard out route pass plays. Be sure to include running plays to keep the defense honest.

2. Develop specific code words and hand signals the team has memorized that are specific to each play. Many teams issue wrist bands to all the players so they can stay on the same page and know which play is being called.

3. The team and coaching staff must know the plays and any sequences they are run in by memory. Coaches set aside practice time to run the plays, practice sending in the signals. For the best results keep the defense elsewhere and have the team running the plays by themselves. This way you get more practice time.

4. Practice the plays as if it were game conditions, these keeps coaches and the team on the same page at all times. Place the ball at the 20 say it is 3rd and 15 runs different plays, determine which plays you think will get the best results and put in the game plan. The more you practice real game situations, the better your no huddle offense will work.

5. Implement your no huddle offense into the game. If you are looking for a fast start and to catch the defense off guard, use it on your opening possession. If you are down at any point in the game and want to change the tempo of the game, put it in wear down the defense. Make the defense play more honest, the no huddle offense will reduce their use of more complicated defensive strategies.

In conclusion the no huddle offense is an offensive strategy that can help you take control of a game. It is adaptable to any offense you use. Whether you want a fast start out of the gate, establish punishing down hill running game, the no huddle is an offense you want in your offensive weapons arsenal.

BCS Computer Snafu Confirmed

As we all know, six computers rank and score teams for the BCS and comprise one third of the BCS formula for determining a teams BCS rankings. At stake are millions of dollars and determines who participates in the coveted BCS Bowls and the MNC game.

There are several issues with the computer component of the system. Many believe they are skewed towards the six AQ conferences particularly the SEC. Although the six computer polls deny this, there is no way to prove it one way or another. Five of the six polls refuse to release their formula for ranking teams, calling the formula proprietary property.

Colley is the only poll offering transparency in how its formula works and that is where the error that effected the BCS final standings was detected. The error is believed to have impacted the rankings done by the other five computer polls.

The error was caught in the Colley data by BCS guru Jerry Palm. What Palm discovered missing the Colley data was the Appalachian State blowout over Western Illinois in the FCS play offs. It is surprising to think the FCS play offs would effect the BCS rankings, but they did.

This time there was no serious damage, no one was wrongly excluded from a BCS Bowl and loosing millions from the snafu. What it did do was wrongly place LSU over Boise State in the standings. Since the goof up was discovered, Boise State is now ranked 10th over and 11th place LSU.

What is disturbing is that the error took place and that it took an outsider to find it. Apparently there are few if any safeguards if any to protect teams from these errors. Add in that five of the computers wont allow their calculation formula to be seen and one must wonder, are there more errors we dont know about?

Over the thirteen year period the BCS has existed, were there any teams that were unfairly excluded from the Bowls or the MNC game?

The BCS is very flawed, this just adds to the fire of the critics demanding a play off.

Football & Broadcast Legend Don Meredith Died

Yesterday the world shrank a bit more with the passing of former Dallas Cowboy Quarterback and Monday Night Football Broadcaster Dandy Don Meredith.

Meredith was the original quarterback for the Cowboys signing a contract them in November 1959, two months before the team was accepted into the NFL. Dallas was the only team he played for from 1960 through 1968, retiring at age 31.

Dandy Don was the took his team to the NFL Championship game in 1966 and 1967 playing against Green Bay in the famous Ice Bowl Game.

For those of you old enough to remember, Don Meredith became part of the Monday Night Football broadcasting team of Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford. It was there that he earned his nick name Dandy Don. His presence in the booth won that hearts of fans all across the country. He had a very laid back personality and a great sense of humor. His wit was rapier sharp, he was the only person who could go toe to toe with the acerbic Cosell in a smack down and win and win he did, Howard was no match for the country boy from Mount Vernon, Texas.

Many a time the Monday night games would get boring and out of hand. The outcome would become obvious and Meredith would pronounce the game over with his singing of Turn Out The Lights The Partys' Over.

Sadly Don Meredith is gone at age 72 from a brain hemorrhage he suffered at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was with his wife and daughter when he died yesterday.

Good bye Don, thanks for the memories.

Look For Hawaii To Join The Mountain West Conference

According to Idaho Statesman writer Brian Murphy the next step in Hawaii moving on to the MWC takes place next week when they will be extended a formal invitation. Look for the Warriors to accept.

With the top three WAC teams already accepting invites the WAC really does not have much to offer Hawaii. The move on only makes sense. They will be able to continue the rivalries with Boise, Fresno and Nevada in their new conference in 2012.

I am sorry for what this does to the WAC Conference, I think it is the death stroke. For those of us that have traveled to Hawaii, its a great place to visit and play football. The teams that make the long journey are rewarded with a 13th game, adding to a teams revenues and exposure of possibly playing a BCS school.

Congrats to Hawaii, it is nice to have them as conference mates in 2012.

Boise State Football is Vegas Bound

The Boise State Broncos have been invited to the Maaco Bowl hosted in Las Vegas to play the Utah Utes on December 22nd. It should be a good game.

The last time these two teams met was in 2006 at the home of the Utes, Boise destroyed the Utes and left the Utah teams season in shambles. Most of the Utah fans left the game at the half. It was a hard hitting game. The following picture shows just how hard.

I still remember the first time we played Utah 30 years ago. We were an upstart division II team traveling down to Utah and were a heavy underdog. During our walk through the day of the game, Utah officials approached our coach and asked if he minded giving up the field early so that the Ute band could use if for practice, qualifying the request with, you are over matched so what difference would it make?

Funny how things unrelated to the play on the field can change the outcome of a game. Coach Criner had all he needed to get his players over the top to win. Win they did Boise humiliated the Utes in the field and in the papers when Criner was quoted as saying, maybe the next time Utah has visitors, they will treat them with a little more respect.

As you can tell their is a history between Boise State and the University of Utah. Both squads will be aware and primed to go. The Broncos still felt they were the better team in 2008 and Utah was selected over Boise as the non AQ at large.

Utah will be missing its quarterback do to injury just as Boise State will still miss Byron Hout at middle line backer. Hout was the Bronco anchor in stopping the run.

Given the last two games and the success teams had running, I look for Utah to exploit the middle with a sound running attack. It will be a good game.

Boise State Football For 2010 Is In The Books

My beloved Broncos have finished the season with a 11-1 record and are co champions of the WAC Conference. Yet is still does not feel like a winning season. The BSU Fans I talked to before and after the game all said the same thing, the loss to Nevada is still being felt. All the fans I spoke with and myself included were there at the stadium because of the seniors.

When Kyle Brotzman was introduced he got perhaps the loudest cheer of all the graduating seniors, followed by RB Jeremy Avery and receivers Titus Young and Austin Pettis.

Going into today's game Brotzman was 9 points shy of becoming the leading scorer in NCAA football history. He was 6 for 6 in extra points but sadly, he missed his only field goal try, a chip shot from the left hash mark. My heart goes out to that kid, his career is over and he will be most remembered for 3 misses in a row.

Utah State received the opening kick off and ran the ball out to their own 29. Their first play was a short pass play and Darrel Acrey the senior middle line backer went out in style. He jumped the route for quick pick 6 and had the field to himself as he ran it in. Special for him, was his mom and brother were on the sidelines and saw him score. He was able to run over hug his mom and give the ball to his younger brother. What a way to end his career, it does not get any better than that.

Seniors Austin Pettis, Jeremy Avery and back up running back Jarvis Hodge all had touchdowns on this their last time on The Blue. Sadly missing one was senior receiver Titus Young. Boise tried their best to get him in but it just was not to happen.

For Boise State and Coach Chris Petersen, this was a special class of 18 departing seniors. It was Chris Petersen's first recruiting class, a class that leaves with a record of 47 and 5. Not bad for his first class.

All the remains is to find out which bowl game will be hosting the Broncos. It sounds like it has been narrowed to two. The Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 22 against University of Utah or the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco on January 9th. Either way it will be Brotzman's final chance to set the new NCAA scoring record, I sure hope he makes it, he only needs 3 points.

Its The Final Game Day For 2010

Today is Boise States final game of the season. A season that started off with so much on the line every game. The opener against the top 10 Virginia Tech Hokies and ACC player of the year Quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Congrats TT, your a class act on and off the field, you deserve the honors. The game was played was played in DC and lived up to the pregame hype. Boise won a thriller and secured its top ten preseason ranking.

From there the Broncos moved on to the MWC and destroyed Wyoming in their house. The next week we had our first home game against the Pac 10 Oregon State Beavers featuring the talented Rodgers brothers. We managed to win on the blue.

Everything was going Boise States way and we were getting more attention this season than we have ever had in the past. We had the honors of being a regional cover for Sports Illustrated followed by being on the national cover. Man we have arrived.

The rest of the season seems like a blur, the Broncos pitched shut outs against San Jose and New Mexico State. We were on cruise control as we destroyed Hawaii at home and followed that up with being the first team to blank the Fresno State Bull Dawgs in 12 years.

We had a #4 ranking in the BCS polls, the highest ever for us, as we prepared to invade Reno and take on the Nevada Wolf Pack. We were in position to challenge for the national title by beating the #19 ranked Pack and become the first mid-major to have back to back BCS Bowls.

It was Black Friday and cold in Reno. Boise had not lost a regular season game since it lost in Hawaii to the conference mate Warriors on Black Friday 2007.

Things in Reno started well, the Broncos had a nice lead after the first quarter even though they left points off the board. By the half the Broncos had a comfortable lead 24-7. Something was different, Boise had time to score in the remaining minute or so of the first half and the Broncos took their foot off the accelerator. Maybe it was because the Nevada defense was getting to Moore a bit or the Broncos were not firing on all cylinders, but they took their boot of the Wolf Pack throat.

The second half of that game changed the Bronco destiny and season. Twenty years ago in Reno, Boise battled it out with the Pack in a division 1AA semifinal game. Boise missed the game winning field goal in the closing seconds and the game went into overtime. Both teams fought hard and in the 3rd overtime Reno advanced itself to the 1AA championship.

This cold Black Friday night was deja vu all over again. Boise and Nevada were tied with 9 second left and the Broncos were close to 70 yards from victory. Quarterback Kellen Moore had one miracle left in him. He wound up and tossed a 53 yard pass to wide out Titus Young who made a sensational catch. Two seconds left on the clock and WAC point record holder Kyle Brotzman stepped onto the field to kick a game winning BCS Bowl saving 26 yard field goal from the center of the field. Just like former BSU kicker Mike Black 20 years earlier, Brotz missed the easy one from the center of the field, sending the game into overtime.

This time it would be different, I felt it and knew the gloom that awaited us. Boise was gassed the defense was on empty. The Broncos had the first possession and could not must a first down. Brotz was lined up in the center of the field for a 29 yarder, it went wide left. Four plays later Nevada made it winning 34-31 ending the Broncos hopes of three back to back perfect regular seasons a BCS Bowl and sole ownership of the Wac Conference Championship. Gone was the top 10 BCS ranking.

Today a 10-1 Boise State team takes to The Blue for its regular season finale and plays the Utah State Aggies. Today the Broncos can force a three way tie for the conference championship. Today Boise State can send its seniors off with the taste of victory and another championship ring under their belt. I believe Boise will do exactly that.

We started with high hopes, things did not turn out the way we had hoped but a 11-1 season and co champions of the conference isnt bad. After today another Bronco season is in the history books, been a hell of a ride. I look forward to today to pay respects to our departing seniors and to what next season will bring. Thanks Broncos for another wonderful year of college football.

College Football: The Ugly Side

Last Friday those who watched the Boise State v Nevada game saw one heck of a game. We witnessed talented well coached teams make plays on both sides of the ball. We saw teams that did not quit. Nevada came from a large deficit to tie the game.

We saw Boise States Kellen Moore throw a hail Mary to Titus Young who made a spectacular catch and give the Broncos a 26 yard field goal attempt with 2 seconds on the clock.

We saw last years Fiesta Bowl hero Kyle Brotzman step onto the field and attempt the game winning kick. For those that dont remember last years Fiesta Bowl featuring Boise State the the TCU Horned Frogs, the game was tied at 10 each. Boise faced a 4th and long deep inside their own territory. Brotzman came onto the field to punt, but it was a fake, With a defender right in his face, about 2 strides away, Brotz threw a perfect strike just over the punt rushers head. Kyle Efaw made the grab for 20 yards a first down and set up the game winning touchdown.

Friday did not pan out as well for KB he sent the attempt wide to the right, sending the game into overtime. Boise got the ball first and the Nevada defense helped stall the Bronco offense, forcing another field goal attempt by Brotzman, it sailed wide left. Three plays later the Nevada kicker became the toast of Reno and Wolf Pack Nation as he booted the game winner through the uprights.

As many of you know, Brotz has been the focus of scorn and ridicule of football fans across the country. Sadly Boise State fans have participated in hate campaigns directed at the senior kicker.

I am going to ask all you readers to help me. Some idiot has put up a Face Book page that is called Kyle Brotzman Sucks. Please use the following link and go to the page. You find a link on the left that says report this page. There you will find a menu that ask why. I chose it directs hate and in the drop down I chose it directs it directs hate at me or a friend.

If enough people do this, Face Book will delete that page. Nobody has hurt more than Brotz and no athlete who does the best he or she can with what they have deserves this kind of hate. All it shows is the ugly side of sports. Kyle Brotzman

Cam Newton Is An Idiot

Auburn's Cam Newton goes beyond what was he thinking, he doesn't think, to say he does is an oxymoron. The guy is a compete and total brainless moron.

How can I say this? Well Cam and it appears some of his teammates have removed all doubt that his cranium is empty.

As we all know he his father and Auburn University have been investigated for a pay for play scandal. It has become so serious that for the first time ever the FBI has been involved in a possible college football scandal.

Common sense tells us when a scandal of this magnitude is being investigated that the parties of the focus of the investigation keep a low profile and do not do anything that can add fuel to the fire. With Cam Newton, throw common sense out the window as well, he does not have any.

Right now this kid is the most scrutinized player in the country, he is a lock for the Heisman and looks to make millions in the up coming pro draft. Doesn't he know the internet is not Vegas, what happens on the web doesn't stay there hidden away and protected.

It appears Newton lives up to his first name, Cam, and is not shy about being on the old web cam. Not only does Newton show his face, but it appears Cam likes to show baby Cam on the net as well. Doesn't this guy read news or listen to sports talk shows. Didn't he hear about the controversy surrounding Brett Favre and his allegedly sending pics of baby Brett to a woman who did not appreciate them?

This time there is pay for play. The woman Newton was web caming with has all the video and with sound. She is trying to sell the Newton tapes and I am sure some one will pony up the bucks to be able to show Big Cam and baby cam in all their splendor and glory.

Pistol Offense: Is It The Best?

Each year the Pistol Offense gains more converts but is it the best offense? Last season the Nevada Wolf Pack, whose coach Chris Ault invented the Pistol produced the first back field to have 3 one thousand yard rushers in one season. Colin Kaepernick the quarter back and running backs Luke Lippincott and Vai Taua all produced more rushing yards than thought possible.

November 26,2010 in Mackay Stadium, home to the Nevada Wolf Pack the nation got an up close and personal look at how the Pistol Offense operates. They were playing host to #4 in the BCS Polls, the Boise State Broncos. One of the most balanced teams in the country that has one of the stingiest defenses in the nation. Giving up just over 215 yards per game and holding teams like Virginia Tech and running backs like Quizz Rogers to less than normal performances, the Pack was about to face the toughest defense they had faced all season.

The Pistol is designed to create a downhill running game and with a quarterback that can dun and pass, it becomes a bigger threat to the defense.

What the viewing audience saw was a second half where the Nevada running game shredded the Boise defense at will, gashing the Broncos for good gains on every run.

The Pack was able to gain 269 yards rushing, more yards than the average combined passing and rushing attacks of the previous ten teams Boise played this year. Earning 239 yards in the second half as the Nevada line wore down the defensive line,doing exactly what the Pistol is designed to do.

The Boise State defensive strategy was to place spies on the Nevada Quarterback Kaepernick and prevent him from getting to the edge and turning up field. During the first half they were successful however using effective blocking schemes the Pack offense was able to open large holes in the line. The running backs were not getting first contact till at least two to three yards past the line of scrimmage. Their running attack averaged over four yards per carry. In the fourth quarter it was very evident that the Bronco Defense was gassed and the Nevada running game operated at will.

This offense is very lethal to any defense when it is operated by a running passing quarterback. It makes the defense put a spy on the QB taking away a would be tackler from going after the running back. Nevada has Colin Kaepernick, the perfect quarterback for this offense, he can pass and run. These last two seasons he has rushed for over 1,000 yards.

The Pistol Offense is here to stay, it takes good offensive linemen blocking schemes and a quarterback who can run and pass to make it work, when it does, it is very effective.

TCU Horned Frogs: Did They Kill The WAC Conference?

TCU has finally made the long anticipated move and will join the Big East in 2012. It puts them in a automatic qualifying conference for BCS Bowl games and gives them more money. The move will help open new television markets while escaping the grim MWC television deal. This will only add to their recruiting, culling athletes from the talent rich east coast.

Will this move be the final nail in the WAC Conference coffin? I tend to think it will. The minimum amount of teams a conference must have for division 1 football is six. Right now that is where the WAC is sitting after the defections of Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada. All three teams are moving to the Mountain West Conference. Boise next season and Nevada and Fresno in the 2012 season.

A couple of weeks ago Hawaii announced they had a good faith verbal agreement to be invited to the MWC. The move by TCU all but assures that the invite to Hawaii is soon to be forth coming and the Warriors will accept. This will bring the WAC football teams down to five.

The problems this creates is many. First they have lost their premier teams to another conference. The teams that ESPN showed most on television. The loss of the most marketable teams could cause ESPN to renegotiate the current contract. The worse case scenario is to drop the WAC from the 2012 line up even if the conference is alive.

Adding insult to injury, the WAC is having trouble finding replacement schools for the current teams that have departed. so far Montana, a Big Sky power house and North Texas have declined WAC invites. Should Hawaii leave, the big 4 will have left and leave slim pickings in the conference, making it harder to attract teams.

Sadly they wont be able to attract teams that can come in and electrify audiences with offense or defense like Boise, Fresno, Hawaii or Nevada have.

The MWC will be the new WAC and I fear the days of the WAC are numbered.

Big Ten Refs Cool Your Jets

Nike and Ohio State teamed up for a special "Pro Combat" look in their uniforms to commemorate the 1942 National Champion Buckeye Team. These new unis had everything going for them. Including the special "Vapor Jet" gloves featuring "premium Magnigrip CL technology" and custom art specifically designed to display a block 'O' when the palms are brought together. The new uniforms were worn for that annual Michigan - Ohio State game.

It seems Nike and Ohio State did everything right but forgot to check them out with the Big Ten Officiating Office. As the game progressed it became apparent the game officials were not impressed with all the uniforms could do.

The problems start in the second quarter of the game when receiver DeVier Posey hauls in a touchdown pass from Terrelle Taylor to make it 24-7 OSU.That is where the problem arose. Posey put his gloves together to form and O and was immediately penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Later in the third quarter after Boom Herron scored on a 32 yard run, making the score 31-7 OSU, offensive lineman Mike Adams flashed the O to the fans and he too was hit with a 15 yard penalty.

Come on Big Ten Officials, loosen your knickers, get some air and stop taking the fun out of the game. Kids score, they are pumped, the fans yell and cheer. Its not like the players were taunting anyone or being poor sports. They were celebrating their success and sharing it with the fans.

Whats next, excessive celebration penalties for the still allowed chest bumps. Will we see 15 yard penalties for cheer leaders doing flips?

This is just stupid on the part of the officials, the games are to be fun and entertaining. Fans want to interact with their teams. Teams want the fans to be part of the game. We see in games all over the country where the players encourage the fans to stand and cheer.

Big Ten Officials get your act together and stop taking the fun out of the game.

Congrats Nevada

I really expected us to beat Nevada by 21 points, be WAC Champions, leap frog TCU and be invited to the Rose Bowl.

Those dreams ended on a cold wintry night in Reno, Nevada. The Pack bested Boise State 34 to 31 in overtime.

Boise started the first half on its usual fast track going into the half leading 24 to 7 and leaving some scoring opportunities on the field. Receiving the second half kick off made me think we had this game well in control and that covering the spread would be easy. Not the case.

Nevada made the Broncos punt three times in the 3rd quarter while recovering some of their own fumbles. The Pack came out with their hair on fire and for the first time in years, the Broncos were man handled.

Nevada ran between the tackles like Boise State was nothing. Their offensive line pushed our defensive line around as their running backs ran on us at will. Kaepernick injected his running skills into the game.

He did what he does best if he can get to the edge, he takes off and is gone, he was in trouble, we had him and yet he escaped and went for 6.

It was a very hard fought game, Nevada never quite but neither did Boise. Nevada tied the game up and Boise had 9 seconds to go over 70 yards to win the game. Kellen Moore hit Titus Young on a bomb that left them 2 seconds on the clock and a 26 yard field goal from the center of the field. Something that Kyle Brotzman makes in his sleep but that was not to be. He missed it sending the game into overtime.

Nevada won the toss and chose defense. Their defense held and Boise had to try another field goal from the center of the field. Nevada was not to be denied last night. Brotz pulled a 29 yarder to his left.

Nevada played for position and their freshman kicker became man of the hour as he put one through the uprights.

It is not often the Broncos lose or are out coached, last night was one of those nights, ending the nations longest winning streak of 24 and Boise States longest winning streak as well as all hopes of playing for the national title or even going to a BCS game.

It hurts to lose and lose all the dreams we had hoped for, but better to lose it on the field of play than at the hands of the computer rankings or from voters that never see you play. Last night Nevada proved this year they are the better team, cant wait till we play them next time.

Bevo XIV Had It Better Than Bevo 1

Bevo is one of the most recognizable mascots in college football and no expense is spared in the caring of Bevo and transporting him to games but that was not always the case.

The University of Texas have always been known as the Longhorns, even before they first appearance of their first Long Horn they named Bevo. Prior to his appearance on Thanks Giving Day against Texas A$M in 1916 the Longhorns had a dog as their mascot.

The original Bevo was a straggly long horn purchased by alumni. Legend has it that UT alum Stephen Pinckney had spotted the orange-tinged longhorn on a cattle raid in Laredo and bought him with $1 contributions from 124 fellow alumni.

He was transported by rail with no food or water and made his first appearance that Thanks Giving Day at half time. The Longhorns went on to win that game 21-7 and have had a Longhorn mascot named Bevo ever since.

After the game Bevo was shipped to a stock yard in South Austin where photographer taking his picture for an alum magazine was charged by the steer and he was dubbed Bevo.

Back in those early days, Bevo was not as highly regarded or protected as are his Bevo descendants. During the winter of 1917 Texas A&M students snuck into the pen housing Bevo and branded the poor creature with a 13-0 the score of the Texas - Texas A&M score from the 1915 game played in College Station.

The final insult to Bevo was the winter of 1920. The cost of maintaining and feeding Bevo was 50 cents a day, big money back them. Bevo was invited to the team banquet after Texas defeated A&M. Unfortunately for Bevo, he was the main course and the A&M players were fed from the side their students had branded 3 years earlier. They were also presented with the hide that bore the brand.

How times have changed, today`s Bevo like live college mascots across the nation is pampered and well cared for and would never be thought of as part of the main course for a joint team banquet. Now you know more about the legend of the UT mascot, Bevo.

Ohio States Presiden Gee Makes The Case For The Non AQ Teams

Mr. Gee the president of Ohio State University has done more to help the case of the non AQ teams than help the BCS.

Earlier this week he went on a rant defending the BCS operations and how the select teams to the various BCS Bowl committees. In doing so, not has he only help make the case for teams like Boise State and TCU, he has put their process under more scrutiny than they care for.

During Mr. Gee`s rant he stated that the schools from the non qualifying conferences do not play tough enough schedules to play for the national title. He explained that the BCS which if comprised of 6 conferences must look beyond the " shiny won loss record" and look at who the teams in the elite play.

Gee qualified his remarks and expertise on the subject stating he has been president of schools in the SEC and Big 10, stating that these schools, "that it’s like murderer’s row every week for these schools,” Gee, formerly of Vanderbilt, said. “We do not play the Little Sisters of the Poor. We play very fine schools on any given day."

Dr. Kustra of Boise State took exception of President Gee`s remarks and to Gee`s lack of knowledge of the Buckeyes opponents of the last two season and pointed out that the SOS of Ohio State is not as strong as Gee would have the public think. Kustra went on to say that maybe Ohio State and others in the BCS conferences don't play the little sisters of the poor but they must play the little brothers.

BSU and others have filed an anti trust law suite against the BCS using the Washington DC law firm of Arent Fox who is urging the Justice Dept. to investigate the case.

What Gee has done is given the plaintiffs a wonderful Thanks Giving present, in defending the BCS he has admitted that the BCS does deliberately exclude the non AG schools from the mythical national title game.

Did The Minnesota Vikings Do Something Right? We`ll See

Yesterday I asked the searing question, can the Vikings do anything right? When they cannot even correctly spell the last name of a 5 time Pro Bowler by the name of Williams, you do have to wonder.

Well today they have decided to make a coaching change. How their fortunes have turned. Last season they were a Brett Favre pick away from going to the Super Bowl. Most likely they will seat the playoffs out, watching the games at home.

What happened to the Vikings? First Brett Favre has stayed on season to long. His picks, forced passes and injuries have taken their toll. He is no longer a younger player in his late 20's or even mid 30's. Favre is a 41 year old quarterback rife with injuries, his skills have left him and he is playing like what he 41 and too old now for the rigors of the game.

The Randy Moss situation and the way Childress handled it left a team divided. As many as 6 members of his team secretly told reporters Childress is the one that must go, not Moss. Throw in yesterdays humiliating loss of 31-3 to the Packers and maybe the " dump Childress" crowd is right.

Seems yesterday was the straw that broke management`s back. Today the Vikes did just that, gave the old head coach his walking papers.

Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier has named interim coach till the end of the season. His first move should be to meet with Favre and ask him to step aside or face being benched. Old #4 no longer has the skills or body to compete at this level. It is time the Vikes put some new blood in at QB and start Tarvaris Jackson.

Under Childress`s leader ship, have fallen from Super contenders last season to the NFL`s most dysfunctional in pro football this year.

Did the Vikes do something right by firing Childress, will Frazier bench Brett and get Jackson under center? We will see as time reveals all.
