NCAA Is Getting Tougher
New rules and tougher penalties is what has evolved from a recent NCAA Rules Comittee meeting.
Taunting was a high priority on their list of things to do. By 2011 we could see a new taunting rule, making taunting a live ball foul.
What they are talking about is if a player is called for taunting as he moves down the field, the penalty is marked off from the point of infraction. Allowing for taking points of the board if the player scores.
There is no room for taunting in football, however football is a game of emotions and the taunting rule is so subjective.
Last season's big controversy stemmed from Georgia receiver A.J. Green receiving a 15-year personal foul penalty after he caught a go-ahead touchdown pass late in a game against LSU. The yardage from the penalty was assessed on the ensuing kickoff and helped LSU get into position to drive for the winning score.
Later the SEC would issue a statement saying there was no video evidence supporting the flag on Green.
Anyhow before this rule becomes law in college football the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel must approve the proposed change.
Addressing player safety issues, specifically conconcussions they endorsed a rule requiring all injured student-athletes, including those who exhibit signs of a concussion, to be cleared by an appropriate medical professional (as determined by the institution) before returning to competition.
Sounds sensible to me. Today's athletes are so much bigger, stronger and hit so much harder, anything that protects todays players must be considered.
Have you ever wondered what the numbers on the black out strips below the eyes meant? Wonder no more, the NCAA is addressing that issue and will ban the use of any strips that have writing on them. Only plain black strips will be acceptable in 2010.
They also addressed the burning issue of socks.Socks no longer have a length requirement, but must continue to be of the same color and general design.
The work of the NCAA is never done and is a thankless hard job that must be done to ensure the integrity of the game and the safety of student athletes. I am so relieved they got that sock issue resolved, it used to keep me up nights before a big game, wondering does my teams socks measure up?

What The Heck Was He Thinking?
Yes it is time for us to ask another pin head what was he thinking?
The latest adventures of pin head belong to a politician, gee what a surprise.
Even for a politician who is such an air head that he makes you wonder, can he chew gum and walk at the same time, this bozo takes pin head to a new low.
Scott Lee Cohen a candidate for Illinios Lieutenant Governor is the focus of this article, as you read on, I am sure he will get your vote for pin head of the week.
Less than a week ago Mr. Cohen won the Democratic nomination for the office of Lieutant Governor and has already thrown in the towel. He has announced that it is his and the parties best interests that he with draw his name from the ticket.
What makes him an even bigger pin head than his reasons for with drawing, he admits to being a woman beater, is the time and place he chose for this historical event. One that will go down in history.
In attendance for Cohen's tearful event were his sons, fiance and her son watching as he did the obligatory, this is the hardest thing I have ever done statement, followed by the litany of transgressions.
It is bad enough he has to do it on a Sunday, our day of rest from the world of politics, but he chose to do it in a sports bar. Not on tv, guess he was too low in the food chain to get a booking. Not on Oprah, heard he was turned down to be even a ticket taker for her show.
No this clown goes to a sports bar and does it during the Super Bowl. He is so arrogant that he thinks his wannabe career, that will never be, is more important than the game. That he is bigger than the Colts and the Saints.
What politicians won't do to get a head line. Imagine being at your sports bar watching the Super Bowl and some clown comes in to say he wont be running for office, do you really care, we are looking at 3rd and 5 a critical down in the game, maybe some people even have money riding on the game and here comes some political hack doing his I have sinned routine. Of course you have sinned, your a politician.
Is nothing sacred? Is no event out of bounds for these guys? Come on Mr. Cohen, its the Super Bowl, not Father John's conffesional.
You can see why I declare this clown pin head of the week and why I would ask, what the heck was he thinking?
For more on the story of this illustrious political hack use the following link, oh and if you do, be sure to have the mandatory hanky for his gut wrenching confession. Link

New Orleans Came to Win!!!
The pregame hype is over, the game has been played and now it is time for all of us arm chair quarterbacks to do our post game analysis.
My first impressions of the game, the Saints were nervous, maybe even a little intimidated by the big stage. Peyton and the Colts seemed more relaxed and able to get into a groove in the first quarter.
They moved the ball down the field collecting points while forcing the Saints into three and outs.
Yet if felt like something was missing, like the Colts came to play expecting the win.
As the game progressed, as the Saints started to settle in, it appeared they had ignored all the pregame hype and how the Colts would walk all over them. The seemed to forget Peyton Manning is currently the best quarterback in the pros.
Drew Brees certainly did as he started connecting more with the receivers. As the running game for New Orleans started to come to life on the moves and drive of Thomas.
This led as we know to a Saints field goal and only down by 7. I could feel the momentum change in the second quarter especially when Orleans got down into field goal range with just under two minutes left.
When the Saints went for it on 4th and goal instead of taking the points, Sean Payton sent the message loud and clear, he came to win.
Although I did not agree with the call or the play selected. I am kind of partial to a play known as Statue of Liberty Left, I admired the courage, he reminded me of a coach just 19 miles from my house.
Even though the Saints failed to convert and came away empty handed, it seemed to lift the play of the Saints D. They forced that three and out on Peyton and the Colts, amazing defense. A rejuvenated offense struck quickly, rewarding the hard work of the D with a nice down Broadway field goal, going into the half down 4.
The second half, what guts, Payton must need a wheel barrow to haul them in. Opening the second half with the onsides kick. Man I still am shaking my head on that one. Then to pull it off, I dont know if the Colts were more shocked or at the moment came to the realization that New Orleans was not afraid of them and that they came to win.
The last time I saw a play like that was around 1971, Boise State against Idaho State in the Pocatello Mini Dome. Tony Knapp aka the River Boat Gambler opened up agains ISU with the onsides kick and the Bengals recovered, putting Boise in a hole from the get go. Adding insult to injury the ISU Bengals opened the second half with the onsides kick and they recovered.
Enough memory lane, what a gutys call, and as a fan of the underdog I was delighted to see their gamble pay off with the recovery. I dont know about you, but I could feel the momentum shifting more and more to the Saints, feel their confidence grow.
They just seemed to move down the field with authority, Brees more like a surgeon, cutting the Colts Defense to shreds. Culminating the drive with their first touchdown, the Saints now had the lead in the Super Bowl.
The lead as we know was short lived, the Colts reponded quickly and with a vengance, the type that seemed to say, dont you know who we are. dont you know we are the best team in the NFL. The Colts seemed to march through the Saints D like Sherman heading to the sea.
In just a matter of minutes or it seemed a very short period of time the Colts drove down and resumed what many dubbed their natural place, leading in the Super Bowl.
All that seemed to do was make the Saints try harder, become more determined, after all they didnt come to show up, they did come to win.
I loved how the Saints retaliated and then going for two, darn that sounds more like a college game than the Super Bowl. The icing on the game, the pick 6. Till that moment the game had only one sack and no turnovers. Yet here was the leagues best quarterback, like Brett Favre before him the victim of a pick.
With time short, the Colts driving down the field it made me pause, can they do it, can they get in and then do the almost impossible, get an onsides kick and drive down to score and force the tie all in under two minutes.
The Saints soundl rejected the Colts, picking Peyton for a second time. Peyton Manning may well be the best quarterback in football today, however it was Drew Brees, the guy who was supposed to be washed up that left Miami with the Super Bowl ring.
I thought the game was exciting, Sean Payton and the Saints brought new flare to the event, taking big risks and getting the Super Bowl crown for their efforts.
Any how that is my take on the game, your comments are invited and welcome.

Ok Tennessee Enough is Enough!!!
Yesterday I posted on this blog that the rumor about Boise State Defensive Coordinator Justin Wilcox was leaving the Broncos and taking the same position with the Tennessee Volunteers. Today Tennessee Coach Derek Dooley proved the rumors to be correct announcing that he has infact hired Wilcox as his new Defensive Coordinator.
Enough is enough. I know The Vols got shafted by Kiffen Lane and that sucks. However the WAC Conference had nothing to do with it. None of our coaches were contacted or advised Lane to abandon Tennessee and go to USC.Yet the Vols seem to be taking it out on the WAC Conference. First they go to LaTech and get their head coach Derek Dooley. Darn Dooley was turning things around for the Bull Dawgs and now they have to start over. Fortunatly they found a good man in Sonny Dykes, who I think will take LaTech to a new level of football.
Now that wasn't enough, now they go and get my Boise State Broncos Defensive Coordinater Justin Wilcox. Now that is piling on, this raiding the WAC and especially Boise State has got to stop.Justin Wilcox for those that dont know, was Boise States D Coordinator for 4 seasons and ended his stint with the Broncos the way it started in 2006, with a perfect season and winning the Fiesta Bowl.
What I want to know is what did our conference or Boise State ever do to Tennessee?
Tennessee has a bigger stadium and nice checker board end zones.
We were never jealous or complained. We are mid major they are SEC it is only right they have the larger stadium and we have The Blue Turf.
They have that classic song Rocky Top, we have, well I am not sure what our school song is, I just know this, it aint no Rocky Top. We are not jealous because we do have our famous Boise State cheer.
They have smoking hot dancers
We still are not jealous.
They have a man that has brought honor home to Tennessee and recently ran for President.
What do we have?
We have Senator " Twinkle Toes" Craig and his You Tube video, Craig caught trolling in the men's room in the Minneapolis Airport. We never complained or asked to trade Senators.
What do the Volunteers have? They have themselves the Tennessee Volunteers pride of the state and SEC.
What do we have?
Our cross state rivals creating a football fashion disaster. Yes folks those pants and logos are real. There is no photo shop here, it was the university of idahos opening game in 2008 against the Arizona Wild Cats.
Did we complain, no, we were laughing to hard.
Idaho lost that game 70 to 0
The only reason the score wasn't higher was the Arizona players were laughing too hard.
Now you come and take Wilcox, enough is enough if you dont want us to cut off your Idaho Taters that make your french fries for McDonalds and other fine eating establisments in Tennessee you will cease and desist raiding our coaching staff.
What we want now for this pillaging of our conference and our team is fair and equatable, we want a 1 &1.
Be a heck of a series and what a thrill to see your team in Bronco Stadium and to hear your band play that iconic piece of music, Rocky Top
Acutally this is a good find for you Tennessee, Wilcox will help turn the Vols football fortunes around and as a Boise State fan I wish only the best for Coach Wilcox and the Tennessee Volunteers.

BSU DC to Tennessee as new DC?
Today the internet was alive with a new rumor by confirmed sources, the rumor? Boise State Defensive Coordinator will be on his way to Rocky top. Yes reliable sources quoted Justin Wilcox will join the new Tennessee staff being formed by new Volunteer Coach Dooley as the new Defensive Coordinator.
Boise States message board was buzzing on this news. People were wishing Wilcox well and praying he would stay. Even more concern than his leaving were fears he would take some of his staff with him. The biggest fear hearing that defensive backs coach Marcel Yates would be heading to Rocky Top.
Tennessee posters sounded glad to have Wilcox but did not know much about him. Wilcox is the son of former BJC and San Francisco great Dave Wilcox, so he has deep Boise roots. Coach Petersen hired Wilcox when he inherited the Broncos from Dan Hawkins. Wilcox was just 29 and one of the youngest if not youngest defenive coordinators in college football.
No question Wilcox is a hot young talent, his defensive staff has had two impressive Fiesta Bowl wins, most recently the one played this year where they shut down one of the most potent offenses of the 2009 season.
Is Wilcox going to Tennessee? Well maybe or maybe not.
The reliable sources, two TV stations, one in Boise and one in Tennessee are responsible for the newest college football coaching rumors. Each using the other as the reliable source, neither having its facts verified.
What happened was yesterday morning a sports person J. Bates for now KBOI Channel 2 Sports received a text message asking if he had heard the news that Wilcox was hired by Tennessee?
According to Bates Blog he followed the text message up with a call to mutual friend of his and Wilcox, he says the friend called back a bit later saying its a done deal. His other call was to the network affiliate the CBS WVLT in Knoxville.
This is where the web of confusion becomes more tangled, Bates asked them if they had any information on their end and they agreed to share any info they got.
Then the good people at WVLT put up a blurb on their website that they were hearing from sources close to the situation that Wilcox is headed to Tennessee. What they omitted was the reliable source was J. Bates asking if there was any truth to the story.
By now all the local media in Knoxville and Boise were reporting it as almost a done deal. Each citing sources that were close to the situation, of which in truth they had no sources close to the situation.
Adding legitimacy to the rumors was the fact that Wilcox did interview with Texas Tech for the position, whether it was offered or not, we don't know. Bronco Nation just drew a collective sigh of relief when it was announced Wilcox would remain at Boise State.
The off season is rife with rumors and this year is no different but it would help if legitimate news sources would double check their stories and have their ducks all lined up before they send it out in cyber space.
The question remains the same, is Wilcox headed to Knoxville, stay tuned this story could have as many twists and turns as a Brett Favre retirement story, well maybe not as many but there is still more to come.
If you want to read the full confessions of a sports reporters flub here is the link. J. Bates

Super Bowl Sunday is Approaching Fast
We are closing in on pro football's premiere event, the Super Bowl. The advertisers are all geared up, hoping to score big with their newest commercials. The local stores will have plenty of Super Bowl party supplies on the shelves and sports fans around the world will be tuning in.
Some of our brave men and women over seas will get a small break from harms way, facing people that would kill them. So as we all settle in on Super Sunday lets have kind thoughts for the people serving in foreign lands and give them a quiet thank you and our best hopes they all return home safe.
Essential to any big event is the pregame ritual, the water cooler talk. Can the Saints hang with Peyton and the Colts? Speculation runs wild and is half the fun.
We have the Siants, it wasn't all that long ago they were called the Aints and fans showed up wearing paper bags over their heads. Ah the good old days, not any more. Now the Saints fans are loud and proud. They should be, after Katrina the Big Easy has had little to cheer about. Even the NFL who has benefited so much from New Orleans did little to help the city recover. Bryant Gumbel did a piece covering that on his sports show a couple years back and was deeply disturbed at how little the NFL did.
Now comes the Saints, instilling a sense of pride and hope for the good people New Orleans, one they richly deserve. It adds symmetry that the Colts are the opponent of the field, but no in heart. Peyton is a New Orleans kid.
For me this game is starting to take on the flavor of Super Bowl 3 the Colts Vs the Jets. The blue blood vs the up start.
The difference being, there will be no Broadway Joe, Drew Brees is a fine quarterback and deserves to be in the Super Bowl, he just aint no Willy Joe.
Unlike Mr. Namath in Miami all those years ago, you wont see Drew Brees hanging out at swimming pools neck deep in a bevy of bikini clad beauties any more than you will hear him do as Joe, guarantee the win.
I suspect both teams will work hard this week and be prepared come Sunday, will it be a game like so many before, dull and predictable or will we see fire works from two top quarterbacks and explosive quick strikes from the running game. Although Reggie Bush has not ignited the league with brilliant runs, he is capable of breaking a big one any time he touches the ball.
As a long time Boise State fan, I like the role of underdog and cheer for them, this Sunday for me it is Go Saints.
