Who is the Best College Quarterback for 2009?

Is it former Heisman Trophy Winner and National Champion Tim Tebow, could it Big 12 Champion Quarterback and Heisman candidate Colt McCoy or does Pac 10 Champion and human bowling ball Jeremiah Massoli earn the honor?

All three have had stellar careers and should be playing on Sunday but is it possible an unknown could have surpassed them?

Lets look at the unknown, Boise States Kellen Moore and see how he measures up. First we will use a recent Idaho Statesman interview to examine his skills as he breaks down 5 plays and finish up looking at his 2009 stats

The following interview is from the Idaho Statesman Newspaper dated 12-27-2009

What Kellen sees

We wanted to know how Boise State sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore makes such quick, proper decisions - so we went into the film room with him. He broke down five plays for us. Here's what we learned:

TOMMY WHO?

The situation: First-and-goal at the Tulsa 8-yard line, first quarter.
The routes: A wide receiver and tight end on each side of the formation run 5-yard in routes (wide receivers) and flag routes to the back corner of the end zone (tight ends).
The expectation: All week, the Broncos planned to throw to the field (wide) side - the left side of the formation.

The routes: A wide receiver and tight end on each side of the formation run 5-yard in routes (wide receivers) and flag routes to the back corner of the end zone (tight ends).
The expectation: All week, the Broncos planned to throw to the field (wide) side - the left side of the formation.

At the snap: The outside linebacker on the field side doesn't blitz. Instead, he drops into coverage and takes away the in to Austin Pettis. That allows the cornerback to sag and take away the flag to Kyle Efaw. Moore eliminates those two options in about a second.

The decision: Moore turns to his right, thinking about the other 5-yard in. But for the first time all week he thinks of something else - his roommate, tight end Tommy Gallarda, on the flag route. That was never a consideration in practice.

"At that point, it's kind of a feel thing," Moore said.
Moore throws high and outside and Gallarda makes a nifty catch.

Result: Touchdown.

TIME TO TAKE A SHOT

The situation: Second-and-15 at the New Mexico State 47, first quarter.
The routes: A wide receiver on each side runs a 10-yard out. A slot receiver and tight end are available over the middle if the Aggies play zone.

The expectation: The Broncos hope to hit a 10-yard out and get into a manageable third-down situation. However, Moore reads man-to-man coverage when the Aggies chase the shifting Broncos receivers and spots the cornerbacks lining up nose to nose with the receivers. That's an automatic adjustment - both wideouts convert their routes to go routes down the sideline.
At the snap: Moore already knows he's going to throw to Titus Young, who is locked in a 1-on-1 battle with All-WAC cornerback Davon House. Moore's job is to disguise his intent. He stares at the safety in the middle of the field for three steps and gives him a little pump-fake. That's just enough to freeze the safety and keep him away from Young, which is critical because Moore is throwing to the short side of the field and the safety doesn't have far to go.

The decision: It's an easy one. It doesn't matter that House is matching Young stride for stride. "Sometimes, you've got to take a shot," Moore said.

Result: Touchdown.

PETTIS SOARS FOR SIX

The situation: Third-and-7 at the Louisiana Tech 12. Boise State leads 30-28 in the fourth quarter.

The routes: Austin Pettis, lined up to the left, runs a skinny post. Slot receiver Tyler Shoemaker, who is on Pettis' side, clogs up the middle. Titus Young runs across the formation to the left on a shallow crossing route.

The expectation: Moore and Pettis hooked up on skinny posts for touchdowns repeatedly this season. Leaving the huddle, that's where Moore wants to throw. He checks the cornerback, who could take away the route with inside leverage. Instead, the cornerback is playing off and straight up. "I already know Austin's going to win this matchup," Moore said.

At the snap: The only remaining concern is the safety on Pettis' side. He could plug the throwing lane. Shoemaker's job is to draw that safety away. "You're watching this guy the whole entire time," Moore said. "As soon as he takes this little hip turn to make an attempt toward Shoe, you've got (Pettis) 1-on-1."

The decision: The Bulldogs have opened the door for Pettis. But Moore's decision-making isn't done. At times, he threw this pass low to protect the ball. This time, he's still worried about the safety and goes high. Pettis makes a leaping catch as the ball sails over the head of the safety, who would have at least broken up the pass if Moore hadn't adjusted.

Result: Touchdown.

CHECK THAT - FAST

The situation: Third-and-8 at the Nevada 27, second quarter.

The routes: Two guys run routes to the sideline to Moore's left. A third is available over the middle on that side.

The expectation: If Nevada lined up in its base defense, Moore could hit Titus Young on a 10-yard out or Kirby Moore on a flag route. However, the Wolf Pack show a different look - three deep safeties, designed to take away the big play.

At the snap: Moore already has ruled out three of his five options because of the sagging defense. He has one downfield option left - and that requires the middle safety to move out of position.

The decision: Moore looks at the middle safety - he doesn't budge - and immediately dumps the ball to tailback Doug Martin, the check-down receiver. Martin was the fifth option when the play was called, but Moore has made him the second option. "Sometimes, you just let that guy get the ball in space," Moore said.

The result: A 9-yard gain and first down. Three plays later, Martin caught another check-down pass for 16 yards on third-and-9 to set up a touchdown.

GET RID OF IT

The situation: Third-and-10 at the Boise State 37, third quarter against Idaho.

The routes: A comeback to Moore's right or an in to his left are the best options. Tight end Kyle Efaw runs a crossing route to the left.

The expectation: The comeback is the preferred throw.

At the snap: The Vandals sit in a zone and take away Moore's first two options. The defensive linemen twist and confuse the offensive line, getting two guys free to pressure Moore. Moore looks at Efaw, but a defender is sitting on his inside hip just waiting for the chance to intercept him.

The decision: Moore throws what looks like a bad pass but actually is simply a throwaway - wide of Efaw into the blue turf. "It's third-and-10, you've really got nothing," Moore said. "You can take a chance and try to hit this (receiver over the middle), but if you get hit and the ball flails, then they've got the ball on the 40-yard line."

The result: Incomplete pass and the Broncos punt. Moments later, they get the ball back with excellent field position and score a touchdown.

How do these 5 plays qualify Moore as one of the best quarterbacks for 2009, lets examine his stats.

Moore stands 6 foot tall and weighs in at 187 lbs. was hardly recruited out of high school. He has average speed and is not known for his scrambling abilities, let alone like an ability to run through players and drag tacklers into the end zone like Tebow and Massoli.

Look at his passing stats for 2009.

YEAR 2008.. CMP 281.. ATT 405..YDS 3486.. CMP% 69.4..YPA 8.61..LNG 80.. TD 25. INT 10.. SACK 13..RAT 157.11

Year 2009..CMP 254.. ATT 392.. YDS 3325.. CMP% 64.8.. YPA 8.48.. LNG 67.. TD 39.. INT 5.. SACK 5.. RAT 167.35 These stats are from ESPN

Who is the number #1 quarterback for 2009? When it comes to passing efficiency and touchdowns to interception ratios......Kellen Moore. Moore is a sophomore with a record of 25 - 1 and currently resides as #60 on the winningest college quarterback list.

How does Moore do it? Look back at his interview, he spends alot of time in the film room studying the defenses and he knows his own play book inside out.

Moore makes it a point to know where his receivers are on every play and how to make adjustments to every defense he sees.

Being a quarterback who is a student of his own play book and how to read defenses doesn't mean you will lead your conference in passing efficiency but look at what it did for Kellen Moore.

See how Kellen Moore puts it altogther this Monday January 4, 2010 on Fox at the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl against one of the nations toughest defenses, the TCU Horn Frogs.

Football Trick Plays

This season is like any other, fraught with unique and standard trick plays.

So far we have seen the standard and not so standard. We have seen the Bounce Double Pass play and how well it can work. We saw in the high school ranks a quarterback throw a touchdown from behind the back.

Some teams have used the famous Statue of Liberty Left and we saw an on sides kick designed to be recovered by the kicker.

Small Bethel College may have come up with the zaniest trick play of all. Rather than try to describe it to you I will just post the link so you can see it for yourself.

Bounce Double Pass Play

Every team has trick plays in their play book and I saw one yesterday that was awesome.

It is called the Bounce Double Pass Play. I am not recommending you coaches install it in your offense but use the link below see the video and decide for your self.

Brandon Spikes Got A Pass - Shame on Coach Meyer

I don't often comment on the misdeeds of college athletes or their coaches. However what Florida Gator Brandon Spikes did and how Urban Meyer handled it is unacceptable.

During the Florida Gator-University of Georgia game Brandon Spikes sought out a Georgia running back and extracted revenge. He with deliberate malice and for thought drove his thumb into the running backs eye. With absolute deliberance Spikes gouged and defenseless players eye.

Urban has issued a swift and joke of punishment for discipline. He he benching Spikes for the first half of the Vanderbilt game. Wow Urban are you maybe over reacting coming down to hard on the kid. I am sure that punishment is one he will never forget.

Many of you might recall how Oregon's Chip Kelly responded to the punch heard around college football. The one after the Boise State - Oregon game when LaGarrete Blount sucker punched Boise States Brian Hout then got into it with the fans and ended his outburst hitting a cop in the locker room.

Blount has not played a down since that incident and is trying hard to work his way back into the line up. Coach Chip Kelly suspended him from action till further notice and has set a plan in motion that Blount must follow to possibly end his senior year playing in the final few games.

Blount must meet every step of the ladder back to redemption from attending class to playing on the practice squad. He is under a no tolerance rule, meaning one screw up, his scholarship and college career are history.

Chip Kelly is taking the steps necessary to send the message, we don't tolerate thuggish behavior. He did not through Blount under the bus, instead he is helping the kid rehabilitate himself and his name, while setting a high standard for the Oregon Ducks.

Blount's action were spur of the moment, not planned out. It is believed that when Hout slapped Blount on the shoulder pads that Hout taunted Blount saying, hows that for a butt whuppin.

Spikes on the other hand was a planned out and deliberate action designed to harm the other kid to extract revenge for something that occurred earlier in the game. Spikes could have blinded his victim of caused permanent eye damage and Urban is giving out a half game benching.

To me it apparent the game is more important than the kid. It is this kind of pass on a kid screwing up that makes them think they are above the rules and helps them get into bigger trouble later in life.

Coach Meyer may know how to coach football but apparently does not know how to teach athletes to be fine men and people that know the consequences of their actions. the only message Meyer sent is, thuggery is ok if you are star athlete. Urban needs to call Chip Kelly and learn all the responsibilities of being a well rounded coach, one that teaches his players how to be men.

UnAmerican Attitude Sweeps the U.S.A

Forget the recession, forget the health care bill a bigger assualt is being launched across America.

This column appears in the Nov. 2 issue of ESPN The Magazine.
Of all the gates -- Watergate, Monicagate, Spygate -- there is only one gate this country can be proud of: the tailgate.

A parking-lot spiral, a cheese brat whispering sweet nitrates and a decent ticket in your pocket. Buddy, that's more American than deficits. So why is America trying to kill tailgating?

Look around: Outside Soldier Field -- home of the Chicago Bears -- fans are getting kicked out of the parking lot once the game starts. Heresy! A lot of Bears fans can't afford tickets ($245 for a nosebleed), but they love pulling into the south lot (for which they pay $46), opening up the camper van, putting one satellite dish on the tailgate and one on the roof and living and dying for their Bears. Tailgaiting is a tradition that's been in place for 90 years, and now it's forbidden? Why don't they just clean our Weber grills with the American flag!

In Arizona, the Cardinals did the same thing. And this coming off a Super Bowl year! These are Cards fans who stuck with a toothless team through a barren 21-year wasteland until it finally made the Super Bowl last season. Now they're getting the bum's rush? Blasphemy! And the Cards have banned postgame tailgating, too. So waiting in lawn chairs by your car with your friends while the traffic clears is now forbidden. Get in line and waste gas like everybody else!
Grab a spatula and rise up!
This crap is going on everywhere. In Dallas, the Cowboys moved tailgaters to the far back outreaches of their lots. What are we, contagious? This kills one of the most fun tailgating traditions of all: mooching. Get an outlying parking spot and wander through tailgaters on the way to your gate. If you're not offered a brew, a burger or a brownie in the first 100 yards, you need to try smiling.

But it's in the state of Michigan that tailgating is dying the fastest. Imagine! The state where the first tailgate came off the assembly line!

What they're doing at Central Michigan should be investigated by Congress. Tailgategate. The geniuses there banned external sound systems. What? Think about our lives. It's just us at the computer. Just us and our CrackBerries. Tailgating is one of the few experiences we have together. We listen to the game together. We sing Queen together. On one set of speakers!

Worse, CMU isn't letting any cars leave the parking lot until the third quarter. Reduces congestion, the school says. Isn't that kidnapping?

Terrified mom: "Please let me go! My baby's climbed out onto the roof of my house!"

Cop: "Sorry, ma'am. Still 1:48 left in the half."

At Western Michigan, tailgating is permitted to begin no earlier than three hours before the game and must end at kickoff. Hell, I know guys who need that much time to set up their radar ranges -- forget moving the Barcalounger out of the truck.

Not only that, but vehicles that take up two parking spots aren't allowed at WMU either. No Winnebagos? No Airstreams? What is this, Sweden?

The bosses will tell you it has to do with curbing alcohol-fueled rowdies inside the stadium. But a guy can sit in a bar 100 yards away and drink enough to drown a Carnival cruise ship, and they don't stop that. If it's drinking you want to stop, have a guy with a Breathalyzer at every gate. If a fan blows more than .08, he doesn't get to enter.

These are families getting screwed here.

If you've ever loved the smell of chili and exhaust together, if you've ever worn a beer helmet, if you've ever made a diving catch onto the hood of a Buick, grab a spatula and rise up! Lock yourself in your Explorer! Grill up liver and send it to the university dean until he relents just from the smell!

Because if you let them take your Winnebagos now, they will take your cornhole game next. If you let them take your sound systems now, they will take your football-field green shag next. If you let them take your tailgate party now, they will take your political party next.

It's already working at CMU. The students were so torqued off at these jackbooted rules that they formed a committee, protested to officials and got the idiotic speakers rule reversed. Solidarity!

I saw the wimps and the lawyers and the insurance companies kill dodgeball and diving boards, but I never thought they'd get tailgating.

Over my cold, dead kielbasa. Link

Notre Dame Will Play For The National Title | Lou Holtz Said So

I like both Lou Holtz and the Fighting Irish, love them or hate them, they are a rich part of the fabric that makes up college football.

They were the first team to travel by train across the country to play USC , starting one of college footballs biggest rivalries. They gave us The Gipper and a team you either love to cheer for or against.

Given their most recent football fortunes I fear Dr. Lou may have gone a bit overboard even for a former ND Coach. They have not exactly lit up the scoreboard or made great defensive stops in some time.

Coach Holtz believes this season the National Championship Game will feature the men from South Bend versus the team from "The Swamp", the Florida Gators.

Before we all rush to have Lou committed to a mental facility lets examine his talking points.

He qualifies his remarks, saying he does not think ND is the best or even second best team in the country but says most of the time they will be the best team in the stadium on game day. Holtz sites The Irish schedule as the secret weapon their quest for a national title game.

Lou believes ND has a lack luster schedule that will make it easy for them to rack up wins and climb through the polls.

However they still must meet the men from Troy and even though the Irish are getting better, so is USC and as I recall, much to the chagrin of my brother, he is an ND Law School grad, The Trojans gave Notre Dame a 35 point curb stomping when they last met.

I like and respect Lou Holtz and enjoy his commentary on TV but Dr. Lou I think you need to switch your brand of Kool-Aid.

America Has Lost A Shinning Light

These past few weeks our nation has been focused on the hottest topic of the day, national health care. Yesterday during the midst of this debate we lost a shinning light, one that cannot totally be replaced or ever duplicated. Yesterday Eunice Kennedy Shriver died and America will not be the same with out her.

Who was Eunice Kennedy Shriver? She was the daughter of Joe and Rose Kennedy, sister of the late President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert Kennedy and mother to former news caster Maria Shiver who is First Lady of California and the wife of the Terminator, Arnold.

Most importantly she was the younger sister of the late Rosemary Kennedy. What makes that so important? Rosemary Kennedy was born mentally challenged living life in hospitals, being cared for those special people dedicated to caring for the less fortunate.

Eunice developed and special awareness of the isolation and limits on the world of people who had problems similar to her sister Rosemary. Using the Kennedy wealth and connections she became a driving force giving us one of our most precious gifts. Because of Eunice and Rosemary Kennedy we have The Special Olympics.

A forum where the air is filled with laughter and applause, where the spirit of competition is alive and well as participants in The Special Olympics compete, make new friends and win over new supporters.

Yes yesterday when we lost Eunice Kennedy Shriver we lost one of America's kindest loving brightest lights, our world has shrunk but we are better off for her having been here.

I have called The White House Comment Line at 202-456-1111 requesting the President declare a national day of mourning. The hold time is long but to me, worth the wait.

Don't get me wrong, I am sure my calling the comment line will not be the reason for a day of mourning, I am sure we will have one. I felt compelled to call and be a proponent of a day of mourning to fill my desire to recognise the accomplishments of a fellow American.

OMG What Were They Thinking?

This edition of what was he thinking is unbelievable and goes to NASA where some of the finest minds in the world work but must lack common sense.

What is it that they could have done or not done that makes them air heads of the month? First we must go back 40 years.

Yes 40 years ago Apollo 11 was launched and man was on his way to the moon, fulfilling President Kennedy's wish.

On July 20th those of us that were alive were glued to television sets watching what a decade earlier thought to be impossible, man walking on the moon. Yet here we were glued to the tv and watching Neal Armstrong walk on the moon. Beamed right into our homes we saw his first steps and his famous words, one small step for man, a giant leap for mankind.

As we prepare to celebrate the 40th anniversary of that momentous moment NASA has to admit .............. they erased the original tapes of that live transmission. The taped over Neal being the first human being to ever walk on the moon. Gone forever are those historical moments. Leaving the burning question, what the heck were they thinking.

I am supplying the link to the full story. NASA Blows It

Not all is lost, Hollywood is coming to the rescue, but its not the same, those of you that recall where you were and what you were doing when you saw Armstrong set foot on the moon saw it at its best live and real. No matter what Hollywood does, it cannot replace the original.

Damn, NASA what were you thinking?

Records are Meant to be Broken....Or Are They? Part 1

We have all lived by the creed records are meant to be broken and with each new record made, breaking it becomes more of a challenge.

As a kid in the 60's following Mickey Mantle, it was accepted if any one could break Babe Ruth's home run record it would be the Mickster. We saw him come close and heard that was one record that could not be broken.

Then came the summer of 1961and Roger Maris. As we know it took Maris more games to hit 61 home runs than it took Ruth. Consequently there was an asterisk next to his name until after Roger died. Yet Ruth who needed more games to set record of 60 homers in a single season had no asterisk after his name.

If you want to know more about the home run race between Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, rent the movie 61* directed by Billy Crystal, its a very well done movie.

In college football there resides some records that seem unbeatable.

The first one we will examine is Al Brosky. Ever hear of Al Brosky? Al Brosky holds the record for most career interceptions in college football.

Al's record is 29 picks, there is a two way tie for second place with 27 ints. What makes Al's record stand out? Certainly that should be a record with in the grasp of any solid defensive back, today,s backs face more passing schemes, they play more games and can be four year starters.

Apparently all of those advantages are not enough. Al Brosky played football for the University of Illinois between 1950 and 1952. Freshmen were not allowed to play varsity and the running game was the main staple of college football. Brosky's record has stood the test of time, for 56 years has been king of the pick and it appears he will continue to do so for years to come.

Next we will look at former Hawaii star Timmy Chang who played in June Jones's run and shoot offense.

Our Prayers Go Out to the Family of Steve McNair

For those of you that may not know, former NFL Quarterback Steve McNair and a young woman were found in a Nashville, Tennessee condo yesterday senselessly murdered.

What a tragedy, McNair leaves behind a wife and four children. Our prayers go out to the family and friends of Steve McNair and Sahel Kazemi, the young lady found with him.

Early yesterday afternoon long time friend Wayne Neeley who co-rents the condo where the bodies were found, went to the condo and found them in the front room. At first he did not realize anything was wrong. Only when he was returning from the kitchen, he saw the blood on the floor.

Neeley called another ling time McNair friend, Robert Gaddy who called 911. Police arrived shortly after and did find a gun presumed to be the murder weapon.

As of this posting , police are keeping a tight lid on the case and have few clues and no suspects.

What a trajedy, two young people cut down like this, one in his prime as a business man. McNair had just opened a restaurant in Nasheville on June 9th, and a young woman standing on the threshold of her adult life.

I first became aware of Air McNair back in his college days at Alcorn State where he electrified fans and opponents with his passing attack. Becoming an instant fan of both he and school I followed them and cheered for them during their run to claim the national title for division II football.

He will always be remembered for long sustained drives, carrying his team on his back. The most noted being the final drive in the 2000 Super Bowl, certainly one of the greatest drives in Super Bowl history.

Today as you go about your business perhaps you can give a kind thought and prayer to the families of Steve McNair and Sahel Kazemi.

What in the Heck was this guy Thinking?

Normally I try to space out the what was he thinking segments, but this one is just to outrageous to pass on.

Fortunately the man's name is omitted from this story, certainly to protect the innocent. The young man had to be rushed to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. The wound was disinfected to cleanse it before he was given a bed in an observation ward.

Now what can be so bizarre about a young man being rushed to a hospital treated and kept for observation? It might depend on the type of wound and how it was inflicted.

In this case it was exactly that. The young man in question tried to perform a self circumcision, yes he tried to circumcise himself and if that were not bad enough, he used...... are you ready for this, he used common household nail clippers. Yes every day nail clippers were the surgical instrument of choice.

I can assure you as I write this story, my legs are crossed and I can feel imaginary twinges of pain as I visualize this home surgical procedure. The only thing I can think of is, thank God he had nail clippers instead of hedge clippers, and of course the standard question, what the heck was this guy thinking? Link

What was He Thinking?

Yes it is time for another addition to the What was He Thinking segment of the blog.

This segment features Texas linebacker Sergio Kindle , who last week was treated and released from a local hospital with a minor head concussion.

Last week he was involved in a car crash, driving his car into an Austin, Texas Apartment building. Maybe he confused it with a fast food drive-through.

Hi one car accident caused $8,700 dollars with damage that his attorney says he will pay if his insurance policy doesn't.

Records show at the time of the crash Mr. Kindle was texting, either he was reading one or responding to one.

What the heck was he thinking, there can be no message so important that it requires some one driving a car to put their life or the lives of others at risk.

As I said earlier in this post nobody else was hurt and fortunately Kindle only sustained a minor head concussion and may have to come up with $8,700 out of pocket. A small price compared to what could have happened.

Please all of you who read this blog, don't text and drive, multi tasking does not belong behind the wheel of a car. Think of the harm your loss would inflict on your friends and family, there just cannot be a text message that important to risk your life over.

Football Tackling | Tackling Drills | part 2

In part one of football tackling we asked if there was a new science to tackling and as taught by Chuck Clemens from the University of Central Missouri we determined there is.
Nothing says good hit like hearing the pads popping and nothing feels better to a tackler than driving a ball carrier to the ground.

Those kinds of tackles happen by design and begin with the basics. . This article will focus on proper tackling drills, training football players tackling techniques that are safe and work.

Starting with angle, regardless of how fast the ball carrier is, if you have the right angle of pursuit, you can hone in on the runner like a Cruise Missile and make a bone jarring tackle. The kind of tackle the opponent remembers and will make him want to stay out of your area.

Regardless if you are tackling at an angle or from the front, as you approach the ball carrier,
lower your body, knees bent and have your arms spread wide to wrap around the ball carrier. As you prepare to explode into the tackle, keep your head up, eyes on the runner and throw your arms forward, thrusting your arms with force will add to your forward momentum.

Make sure your head is on one side of the runner, or the other, never hit an opponent with your head. It can lead to serious injury or death. As you explode into the ball carrier, lead with the outside shoulder and wrap your arms around the ball carrier. Keep your feet moving so you can drive through the guy so you can drive him out of bounds or into the turf. You want to hit the runner around the waist or legs.

Great tackling starts with practicing the fundamentals. When practicing these tackling drills, use a tackling dummy or a teammate, always start at half speed and focus on tackling techniques, balance, feet moving and driving up and through the ball carrier and always have the head on one side or the other of the runner.

We carry several DVDS that demonstrate tackling drills and fundamentals. Use the following link: Football Tackling DVDS see if they can help you develop teeth jarring tackles.

Early Picks for some of this college seasons best OCC Games

Mathew Hayes from Sporting News College Football has picked what he considers some of the better non conference games this season.

Topping his list, The Georgia Bulldogs at Oklahoma State. Gotta agree with him there, that will be an interesting match, a game neither can afford to lose.

His second pick has the mighty Corn Huskers in the south bound lane as they travel to meet Virginia Tech. Should be a good pairing with lots of fire works. In the early part of this decade Nebraska struggled but as of late seem to have things heading in the right direction.

His third choice has Colorado heading into Morgantown for a prime time Thursday night game. Gunga Dan as we used to call him at Boise State, still has that Pat Hill of Fresno State mantra, any time anywhere. Could be a very good game especially if Hawk's son Cody has a big night.

Fouth on the list features Oklahoma at Miami, not so sure I agree with this one, granted the Hurricanes are turning things around, but the Sooners are the Sooners and are usually in the mix of being one of the top 5 teams in the country.

Rounding out Mathew's picks has Missouri vs. Illinois at a neutral site. This could very well be a great game. Missouri will be using new quarterback since Chase D. has graduated.

Mathews also has his top 5 tomato can games. Topping the list and rightly so is Okaloma entertaining Idaho State University. The Bengals against the Sooners is like a 1981 VW Minibus racing and Indy car and the results will be the same. 1981 is the last year Idaho State had any real glory in football, winning the Division II National Title.

Really, if the Sooners wanted an entertaining scrimmage game, and even that is overstating hapless Idaho State, they should have chosen the University of Idaho Vandals. Even though the Vandals cant play football, they can be very entertaining. Last season the opened against Arizona and entertained fans in the stands, the Arizona team and the tv viewing audience with their brand new uniforms, the ones that had the I logo square in the middle of the seat of the pants. Made all of us spud peelers out here in Idaho soooooooo proud.

Umpire Ejects all Fans in The Stands

I think this falls in the, " what was he thinking " category.

At a local highs school baseball game in West Burlington, Iowa and umpire ejected all the fans, emptying the stands. Involved were over 100 fans that the umpire deemed as behaving in an unruly manner.

I have seen coaches and players ejected from games, but the all the fans in the stands, that is a first. Can you imagine what would happen in Oakland if the field umpire tried to eject the fans for being unruly. Break out the riot gear for sure.

Umpire Don Briggs said the student athletes were fine during the Thursday game between Winfiled-Mount Union and West Burlington, however he could not say the same for the cheering sections.

west Burlkington Superintendent James Sleister said he saw no issues and suggested the umpire had over reacted.

After a 40 minute delay that involved police, no arrests were made, the game resumed and West Burlington went on to win 12- 11.

To the umpire I have to ask, what were you thinking?

Defensive Linemen | Rushing the Passer | part 1

In an earlier post I promised we would be expanding our categories and adding new products we hope will be of value to you our visitors.

In keeping with that promise, we have added a new category and football training DVDS. The category is Defensive Linemen Pass Rushing and we have 6 pass rushing videos for you to examine.

A quarterback sack can make or break a game or season. We have all seen games decided by a QB sack, some times determining who becomes a conference champion. This article, part 1, will focus on Swim Move, one of 4 proven pass rushing techniques that produce more effective pass rushes.

1. Swim Move:

The Swim Move is a favorite pass rushing technique of many defensive linemen and can be the most dangerous. The pass rusher has to rise up above the blocker, however if done properly it can be one of the easiest ways to successfully rush the passer. Timing is key to a successful Swim Move, the D-linemen must beat the blocker off the snap of the ball.

Next comes a jab step designed to get the blocker off balance. This is when the defender step one direction while intending to move another. This is followed by a short balanced step using the jab foot, bring it in front of the blocker in the opposite direction. Typically the blocker will follow the first step, the jab step, and find himself off balance.

At the same time the pass rusher brings his inside arm up and reaching out to the back of the blocker, pulling the O-lineman forward, exploiting his lack of balance and swim through the offensive line to effectively rush the passer.

We are updating our Defensive Lineman page, please visit often to see how we are making it more user friendly and adding new DVDS. Please visit us at Defensive Linemen Pass Rushing and examine our new pass rushing videos and come back here for the rest of our rushing the passer training tips.

Did Washington Huskies Football Strike Gold?

The Steve Sarkisian era has begun at Washington and he appears to be getting off on the right foot, but have they struck gold?

Sarkisian's recruiting may have struck the mother lode. He and his Huskies were able to out recruit the likes of , Arizona, Arizona State and Notre Dame, all programs in need of talent.

The gold I refer to is, Washington got the news last night that Nick Montana, son of legendary Joe Montana, has forsaken his Dad's Alma mater and chosen to become a Huskie.

Not only is he the son of certainly one of the greatest quarterbacks to play the game, he has proven credentials of his own. Montana earned newcomer of the year, first-team all-CIF, first-team all-county, first-team all-state and first-team all-league after completing 55 percent of his passes as a junior. He can make plays with his feet and had three rushing touchdowns to his credit. Nick sounds like a chip off the old block.

Montana is not the first son of a legend to chose UDUB Football, just most recent. Cody Pickett who played quarterback there, is the son of legendary rodeo star and world champion Dee Pickett.

Dee was also a quarterback in his college days, he played his high school ball in the Caldwell, Idaho area and was very successful. He signed with Boise State and had earned his way into the starting rotation. However due to personality conflicts with the head coach Jim Criner. We called him Sunny Jim, I swear the man looked just like the kid on the label of the Sunny Jim products, Pickett quit football and joined the rodeo.

Jake Locker has been the Huskies offense and paid a high price with his injuries. I am a fan of Locker and saw him play when my Broncos traveled to Seattle in 2007. Locker is a very talented and strong athlete who inflicts punishment of his own on would be tacklers. One of our linebackers tried to bring him down, failed and received a separated shoulder for his efforts.

Huskie football needs a better O-line some running backs and receivers to take the heat off the QB. Defensively they need some strong scorched earth tackles and defensive ends. I do hope they can build a strong team on both sides of the ball, it is what they need if the want to continue to get recruits like Nick Montana. It would be good for the Huskie Football and good for the PAC 10.

Washington football has a long ways to go in being restored to its former glory days. However with the Montana commit it appears they are making large strides in the right direction.

Good job Coach Sarkisian, best of luck to you and the Huskies.

Brett Favre: and the Saga Continues

Will Brett Favre play one more season and will it be with the Minnesota Vikings. Yes folks the Brett Faver story continues.

According to " reliable sources" love those guys, "reliable sources" the Minnesota Vikings have given Favre a dead line to decide whether or not he wants to be part of the " Purple Gang". According to these guys in the know, Brett must decide this week.

However, aha the plot thickens, Favres manager who would not return phone calls related to this latest twist in the Brett Favre Saga, earlier had said as far as he was concerned his client was still retired. Then went on to extol the virtues of his client and how he would be an asset to any team, especially ones that run a west coast offense similar to what Favre ran at Green Bay.

He elaborated more saying, he would think if they wanted this guy they would be doing more to get him as Brett is still a cut above most NFL quarterbacks. Sounds like a sales pitch to me.

Keeping the drama alive, Vikings Coach Childress has not responded to the story other than to say there is no deadline in place. That I can buy, given Favres current physical condition, having a deadline doesn't make sense, unless of course the Vikes are not interested.

ESPN reported Favre had arthroscopic surgery sometime in May on his ailing right shoulder and that it was not responding. At age 39 this comes as no surprise, even if the shoulder should respond, the older we are the longer healing takes. The report went on to state that if Favre is not feeling better, he will stay in retirement.

Personally I am a fan of Favre and hope he can return to the NFL, he is still good for the game, I would hate to see him take a serious injury, but also understand his need to compete, and it is his life and his decision should an NFL team make an offer.

Stay tuned folks, there is more to unfold in the continuing saga, Will Brett Favre Return to the NFL.

Football Tackling: Does it have a New Science? Part 1

One of the consistent fundamentals of football has been the art of tackling. Over the years we have seen new offenses and defenses, but tackling has remained the same, or has it?
Are coaches teaching out dated techniques for bringing down ball carriers, have tried and true fundamentals become obsolete?

Coach Chuck Clemens, the Co-Defensive Coordinator at the University of Central Missouri thinks so. He believes many coaches are teaching concepts and principles that are 50 years out of date. He has changed his techniques and practice drills teaching new fundamentals.

Since introducing what he calls The New Science of Tackling he has seen a dramatic improvement in his team’s performance. Charting their results over the last two seasons they saw a big reduction in missed tackles. What UMC saw was an improvement of over 70 tackles made over the two year period.

What is this New Science of Tackling and how does it work? One of Coach Clemens concepts is called The Shimmy Tackle. This is usually an open field tackle performed by line backers and defensive backs.

The Shimmy Tackle is performed head up to the ball carrier so the tackler can see the ball carriers numbers. The defensive player wants to look for the ball runners belt line and focus his eyes just below on the hips. The purpose of this technique is to prevent the defensive player from be faked out by a head or shoulder feint. The running back or receiver must declare their direction with their hips.

Part 2 will discuss more of the New Science of Tackling. If you want more information on this subject visit us at Football Tackling DVDS and see all of Coach Clemens New Science of Tackling DVDS.

Yahoo is Suing The NFL Players Association

Hard ti imagine that Internet giant Yahoo would have a reason to want to take on the NFL players association, they think they do. Today in a federal court in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Sunnyvale based Yahoo filed suit against players association.

What prompted this suit? According to Yahoo the licensing arm of the players union threatened suit against Yahoo if they failed to pay royalties for profits earned from publicly available player data.

In the court papers filed, Yahoo says their licensing agreement with NFL Players Inc expired March 2009 and went on to say a court ruling in April proved they don't need an agreement with NFL Players Inc. Citing the CBS Interactive case and victory in that case over the NFL Players Inc were the dispute was of a similar nature.

I almost feel sorry for the NFL Players Union and all of its income earning branches. They have lost big dollars with that loss to CBS and will lose more should Yahoo prevail. This is probably the tip of the ice berg for the players union. The fantasy football leagues are a billion dollar industry that the union would no longer enjoy a slice of the money pie. They need to go on a diet anyhow.

I am not anti union, I just have more respect and appreciation for the players than I do the union that is supposed to care for the remaining veteran players that have made the game so great over the last 5 decades, the ones that created so many of the unions money making opportunities. The ones the Players Union forgets when it comes time to share the wealth.

That same union that cries foul, but court papers proved, conspired with a certain home football game company giant that masked former greats like Mel Renfro in their game so he and other veterans would not get paid their fare share of the royalties.

Its hard to have empathy for a union so dedicated to denying monies earned and promised to the living veteran players from the 50's on, men who with out the game would not enjoy the stature it does today. Men whose images still generate revenues for the union but are denied compensation.

Brian Gumbalt has used his position and the power of HBO to document the abuses and denials of claims by the NFL Players Union to needy football veterans. He has shown case after case where former players are homeless and destitute, in need of medical help and rejected by the very union whose job it is to help and protect these men.

Iron Mike Ditka has testified in front of Congress as to the abuses, yet nothing has changed. I would side with the union if they lived up to their moral obligations, helping former football players in time of need. Seeing that they were getting proper medical attention, were not homeless on the streets, but they have not.

If Yahoo and others prevail against these guys and they see all that money going elsewhere, maybe they might see how players they have denied assistance feel and maybe just maybe if they focused on taking care of their own, then they could glean some sympathy.

Till that scene is corrected and the players union takes care of its own, I could care less who gets over on them, just like they don't care what happens to their veteran players.

Joe Pa Wants to expand The Big 10

Penn State Coach Joe Paterno wants the Big 10 to expand to a 12 team conference. Yes 12 teams, for those that don't know, the Big 10 actually became the Big 11 back in 1990 when they brought the Nittany Lions into the fold.

Joe wants to see a team from the east brought in, particularly one from the New York market which would increase tv revenues and exposure for the Big 10 conference. The teams Joe suggested as great fits were Pit, Rutgers or Syracuse.

I am sure the Big East is thrilled with Joe and his thoughts. However in the interview he gave Wednesday, what he said made sense.

By adding a 12 team it would ease scheduling issues. Currently in the Big 10 the teams are in rotation so they don't play each other every season, kind of muddying the waters of a Big 10 Champion if #1 and #2 don't play each other.

Should the Big 10 follow Joe's suggestion it would add revenues to the conference coffers by setting up a championship game like they have in the Big 12.

I think Joe is on spot on this one and the Big 10 and college football would benefit if the conference took in a new member. With the right team it would make the conference more competitive and a championship game would draw additional television dollars as well as extra attention for the conference.

Adding an eastern school and getting into the New York market makes perfect sense. Not only from a revenue earning stand point, but as a recruiting tool as well. The East has a large pool of football talent and any conference that does not mine the east for football players is missing out.

I hope that powers that be are listening to Joe Paterno, in my opinion, the man knows what he is talking about.

Millvina Dean Passes On

Millvina Dean born February 2, 1912 has died May 31, 2009 at age 97. She passed away quietly at the private nursing home near Ashurst in the southern English county of Hampshire, England where had resided these last few years. Three years ago she was forced into the nursing facility after a fall left her with a broken hip.

Millvina's last years were sadly marked by financial hardships. Like so many, she had out lived her money, but not all her resources. After her injury, she was forced to put many of her life's treasures up for auction in 2008, raising the equivalent of $53,900.00 not alot by today's standards.

One of the items Dean sold was a hundred year old suitcase filled with clothing donated to her, her mother and her brother when they arrived in New York City in the spring of 1912. Other items include rare prints and compensation letters send to her mother.

Their origianl plans had been to leave the UK and move to Kansas and open a tobacconist shop.
However with the passing of her father, the family returned to South Hampton.

Who is Millvina Dean and why am I writing about her? Some times events in our lives are so large, they help define our identity and in Millvina Deans case this is certainly true.

Millvina Dean was the youngest passenger on RMS Titanic and the last survivor to pass on. With the death of Dean, the last living link to Titanic passes with her. Lillian Asplund who died in May of 2006 at age 99 was the last U.S. Titanic survivor and now there are none.

A Mid Major Team in The Rose Bowl?

Could an upstart mid major team play in the Grand Daddy of them all, The Rose Bowl? Stranger things have happened, who would have thought Buster Douglas, 90 days out of alcohol treatment would knock out Heavy Weight Champ Mike Tyson, but he did.

So is it possible that a Utah, Boise State or other mid major team can access the crown jewel of bowl games, The Rose Bowl? According to an article in the Idaho Statesman, a journalistic wonder, by Brian Murphy, there might be change in the winds.

News released divulging the terms of the new contract with ESPN that begins at the conclusion of the 2010 regular season indicate things are changing in Pasadena.

Starting as early as the 2011 Rose Bowl a mid major invasion of this storied bowl game is possible. It can happen if A. The Rose Bowl loses either the Big 10 or PAC 10 conference champion to the national title game and B. a mid major is BCS Bowl eligible. Which means following the 2010 season a mid major could grace the hallowed grounds of Pasadena's Rose Bowl.

It is easy to imagine either Ohio State or the USC Trojans making it to the NC game and a qualified mid major playing either the PAC 10 or Big 10 conference champion New Years Day 2011.

This is one time where the BCS got things right. All the BCS Bowls should be open to the mid major schools. So far the burden has been carried by the Fiesta Bowl and the Sugar Bowl, each hosting a mid major school twice.

Opening things up more is good for the bowls , college football and the fans who pay the bills.

If you are a mid major fan like myself, then this is good news, ESPN has been a boon to college football and to the smaller schools from the mid majors down.

I believe thanks to ESPN's coverage of the lesser known schools they have done more than anyone to bring about parity in college football. Young talents are able to see and scout more teams than pre ESPN days. Bringing more equality in college football. Remember Appalachian State beating Michigan in the Big House and last years Sugar Bowl winners over Alabama , the Utah Utes defeating the Wolverines at home.

Good for ESPN good for the Rose Bowl, allowing the mid majors in is good for football.

Too Much Cola Can Cause Muscle Problems

Whether you are a coach, player or even a couch potato, this article is worth reading.

Too much cola can cause muscle problems, the problems they can cause have a real nice medical term, hypokalemia.

According to Wikipedia, hypokalemia refers to the condition in which the concentration of potassium in the blood is low. Potassium is one of the body's major ions. Nearly 98% of the body's potassium is intracellular. The remaining is extracellular potassium. When the body has a extracellular potassium shortage then the person is vulnerable to hypokalemia.

The key ingredient in cola are glucose, fructose and caffeine -- can contribute to hypokalemia.
Caffeine being thought to be the biggest contributor to hypokalemia.

Symptoms of this ailment can range from mild weakness to serious paralysis. If you have been or are experiencing any of these symptoms, you might want to evaluate your cola intake.

Cutting way back or eliminating sodas from your diet can be an easy cure. for more information regarding hypokalemia I am supplying the link to the article where I got information and to Wikipedia so you can read and decide for yourself if you are ingesting too much cola.

What The Hell Was He Thinking

I have a new installment in the ongoing what the hell was he thinking series. This one comes from Yahoo Buzz.

I admit I read Yahoo Buzz, some of it is entertaining and some stories so outrageous they have to be true. Today I will share two stories that got my attention. The first one being outrageous and the other totally appropriate for Memorial Day.

The first story takes place in Bejing, China involving a 24 year old man heavily in debt and a 66 year old man with a solution.

Chen Fuchao, 24 and in debt to the tune of $290,000.00 was overwhelmed by his situation. So much so that he stood on the Haizhu bridge preparing to end his life. Since April 11 others have used that bridge to commit suicide.

Naturally authorities and a crowd gathered to watch. Traffic was stopped and blocked up. An elderly man ( thank God there is some one still alive I can call elderly) named Lai Jiansheng age 66 was part of the crowd.

Mr. Jiansheng went to the police and offered to try to talk the young man down. The police refused his offer, saying they would resolve the situation.

After 5 hrs of talking and pleading there was still no progress, only more of a crowd, more stalled traffic and more chaos. Jiansheng slipped through the crowd and managed to get up on the bridge where Chen was still debating sky diving without a parachute.

Mr. Jiansheng approached the desperate young man and shaking his hand, pushed Chen Fuchao off the bridge. Fuchao fell approximately 26 feet and landed on a partially filled air bag, sustaining minor injuries.

Of course Jiansheng was arrested for his actions and when ask why he pushed this desperate man he gave an answer that is hard to refute.

"I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest," Lai was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals."

Now you know, what the hell he was thinking. Use the following link to read the entire story. link

This Memorial Day weekend is a time we honor those men and women who have made he ultimate sacrifice in keeping America and much of the world free. It is a time to pay respect to our military forefathers and mothers whose service to this country allows us to enjoy freedoms so many can only dream about and hope for.

Today I will focus on one such man, Frank Buckles, the United States oldest living veteran.

Frank is sole U.S. survivor of what was known as the Great War. We now know it as WWI.

Mr.Buckles was born February 1, 1901 in Bethany, Missouri. Hard to imagine some one who can talk with authority on how things were after the turn of the century, last century.
When Frank was 16 World War broke out and he want to be part of it. He was turned down by the Marines, they felt he didn't weigh enough, so he enlisted in the Army April of 1917.

Frank claims he did not lie to the recruiter, saying he just exaggerated his age. The Army wanted a copy of his birth certificate to prove his age. Frank got by that one reminding the recruiter that Missouri didn't have birth certificates when he was born, the official record then was what was written in the family bible, and he said he would be darned if he was going to bring that down. Frank was accepted into the Army.
History buffs the next part of the story will have you thinking, why do I know that name.
Mr. Buckles join his comrades and was shipped over seas on the RMS Carpathia. Why do you know that name?
Five years earlier in April 1912 the Carpathia steamed into history as the ship that picked up the survivors of Titanic.
During the war Buckles served in England and France, driving ambulances and motorcycles for the Army's 1st Fort Riley Casual Detachment. After the Armistice in 1918, Buckles escorted prisoners of war back to Germany. Following his discharge in 1919, he attended the dedication of the National World War I Museum in Kansas City, Missouri, in honor of those Americans who died in World War I. While there, he met General John "Black Jack" Pershing, commander all U.S. forces in France during the war.
In the 1920s Buckles worked for the White Star Line in Canada (the White Star Line had operated the Titanic). During World War II he worked as a civilian for an American shipping company in the Philippine Islands. He was captured by the Japanese in 1942 and spent the next three years in the Los Banos prison camp. He was rescued on February 23, 1945.
Where is Frank today? One would think after all of that , Buckles would be in a retirement home living out his days in peace and harmony. Not Frank Buckles, the man is still active.
He currently lives in Charles Town, West Virginia and is the Honorary Chairman of the World War I Memorial Foundation. For more on Frank Buckles use this link
As always you are invited to post any comments you wish to share.
