I like both Lou Holtz and the Fighting Irish, love them or hate them, they are a rich part of the fabric that makes up college football.
They were the first team to travel by train across the country to play USC , starting one of college footballs biggest rivalries. They gave us The Gipper and a team you either love to cheer for or against.
Given their most recent football fortunes I fear Dr. Lou may have gone a bit overboard even for a former ND Coach. They have not exactly lit up the scoreboard or made great defensive stops in some time.
Coach Holtz believes this season the National Championship Game will feature the men from South Bend versus the team from "The Swamp", the Florida Gators.
Before we all rush to have Lou committed to a mental facility lets examine his talking points.
He qualifies his remarks, saying he does not think ND is the best or even second best team in the country but says most of the time they will be the best team in the stadium on game day. Holtz sites The Irish schedule as the secret weapon their quest for a national title game.
Lou believes ND has a lack luster schedule that will make it easy for them to rack up wins and climb through the polls.
However they still must meet the men from Troy and even though the Irish are getting better, so is USC and as I recall, much to the chagrin of my brother, he is an ND Law School grad, The Trojans gave Notre Dame a 35 point curb stomping when they last met.
I like and respect Lou Holtz and enjoy his commentary on TV but Dr. Lou I think you need to switch your brand of Kool-Aid.
