The Wild Cat Offensive Formation is becoming more popular each season as more and more teams at all levels find more ways to install it in their offensive game plan.
This article will focus on some of the advantages the Wild Cat brings to the table. We will be looking at it through the eyes of the #3 Boise State Broncos and one of most potent offenses in the last decade.
First the Broncos favor using the Wild Cat Offense more as a red zone offense than at any other time in the game.
The Bronco formation features a running quarterback in the shotgun. This strategy allows for variations from the quarterback keeper, handoffs for between that tackles and fly sweeps.
In the Boise State Broncos case the starting quarterback is not a runner so when they call for the formation, he is switched to wide receiver. This takes the opposing corner out of the play. If you have a QB who is not a runner, the corner must go with him if he runs a pass route or he can do what the Bronco QB did last week. He lined up wide to the left and the corner was right on top of him, after that ball was snapped Kellen Moore just stood there till the play was over and so did the cornerback, staring Moore down while the play went right for a score.
Why Use The Wild Cat Formation In The Red Zone:
According to Coach Petersen this gives the offense several advantages.
1.The defense is bunched up tighter on the shorter field.
2.A quarterback run allows for 10 blockers versus 9 if the ball is handed off.
3.The safeties are tighter and with the numbers imbalance this kind of helps to neutralize things.
Calling The Signals:
1.Most quarterbacks have a certain rhythm to their cadence calling that the offensive line is used to.
2.Try using the silent count with hand signals so as not to throw the offensive line off and get a 5 yard movement or offsides penalty.
In conclusion Boise State uses the Wild Cat Offense formations in the red zone because it works. They catch the defense off balance because they are bunched up tighter. They are able to have 10 blockers with the quarterback as the runner and last week in the red zone they ran 8 plays for 38 yards and 3 scores.
If you want to increase your scoring opportunities in the red zone you might consider the Wild Cat Formation. There are many DVDs demonstrating different ways to run this formation. Use the links below to see the list of videos available and decide for yourself if they can help you.

The Great Debate: The Boise State Broncos
For the last 30 days or so Boise State has become the most talked about football program in the country, gaining more discussion and attention than Ohio State and Alabama combined. This year they have graced the regional cover of Sports Illustrated twice in about 30 days.
Almost every college game you tune has Boise State as part of the discussion. It seems there is no escaping the Broncos. You either love them or hate them. Right now the SEC and the BCS hate them with a passion because they have become a major threat to the BCS's money pool and a threat to the SEC who is accustomed to having one of their own in every BCS NC game and now here comes the Broncos, those brazen Idaho spud peelers threatening their sovereignty.
The burning question in college football is do the Broncos deserve a spot in the national championship game if they win out and the replies on both sides of the question are just as burning as the question.
We have all heard the argument that Boise could not survive playing the same schedule week in and week out that the SEC, Big 10 and the other AQ Conferences play. They seem to forget neither could they so the fill up with as many cupcakes as possible for their oc games.
I seriously doubt that these other conferences could do as well as Boise State and other mid majors like TCU and Utah following our travel schedules. Georgia`s Mark Richt complained about having to travel all the way to Colorado and how it would impact his team. I think he had a point as Colorado truly a team struggling beat the Bull Dogs. Hey coach we travel all the way to LA points in-between and still win.
Bottom line if Boise does run the table they will and Nevada`s only loss is to Boise State, the Broncos will have defeated on the road one top ten team, at home one top 25 team and on the road what ever ranking the Wolf Pack has.
If they are the one of two undefeated teams at the end of the season then they deserve a bite at the big apple, they have earned it on the field doing something any team would have trouble doing, three back to back perfect regular seasons and one BCS Bowl win.
That is my take, if you disagree please sound off, lets get a good spirited debate going.

Pollsters Do Off the Field What Oregon Couldn`t
The new college football polls are out and the voters did for the Oregon Ducks off the field what they could not do on the field and that is beat Boise State. The mighty Ducks leapfrogged the Broncos in the polls moving from 4th to 3rd and did it without ever laying a glove on the Broncos.
Sos and last years schedule should not count, well yes and no. Boise did what no other team did in 2008 and 2009 and that was beat the Oregon Ducks at home. Opening the 2009 season featured the Ducks on The Blue in Bronco Stadium and the Bronco Defense crushed the Oregon Offense. The Ducks did not have a first down till midway through the 3rd quarter. Heisman Trophy hopeful LaGarrett Blount was held to no yards and tackled for a safety.
Yet the pollsters have decided that the Ducks are a better team. I think it is the BCS fighting back, angry over the threat the Broncos pose to their self declared sovereignty. They cannot stand the fact that Boise has a tougher schedule than Nebraska, they detest the fact that Boise has beaten almost every BCS team in their path since embarrassing Oklahoma in the Jan. 07 Fiesta Bowl.
Last year to avoid the humiliation that Utah gave Bama in 2008 they had Boise and TCU face off in the Fiesta Bowl and avoid having two more BCS teams lose to two mid-majors.
Now they are doing it again in the polls. Boise will handily dispatch Toledo this weekend and should drop one if not two more spots in the polls.
If the Ducks are so much better than the Broncos lets settle it on the field. QuizzRodgers could only get 46 yards on Boise State, Oregon's big dog running back would not do much better.
