The San Jose State Spartans schedule demonstrates the financial times of the state of California. They will open up the 2010 season with body bag games.
They start out with Alabama and move on to Wisconsin. No disrespect to the San Jose, they are going to be tortured bad in these games, I just hope non of their kids get injured. SJSU is a lower tier WAC team, no way can they be competitive against the Tide or the Badgers. Its the money.
Given the financial crisis of California, San Jose State needs to the money if they are to have a football program. California is in such dire straights the Spartans and other schools in the Golden State are taking games they other wise would avoid.
As a fan of a conference mate of San Jose I wish only good things for them and hope in those two opening games no on is seriously injured. Sure be nice if our economy could get turned around so schools with less money don't have to take on these dangerous games. I don't think they are good for college football or the teams that have to play them.

Utah State Utes - Will They Leave?
Just when I thought I had displayed a slight modicum of intelligence the Pac 10 removes all doubt....I don't know diddly.
In an earlier post I suggested that the Big 12 might look to the Mountain West as a remedy to fill the void left in the conference by their two defectors, Colorado to the Pac10 and Nebraska to the Big 10. My guess was they would look at BYU, TCU and Utah. That still may be the case.
However I did overlook the Pac 10 needing to add one more to bring them balance and create the newly expanded conference to the PAC12.
After being rejected by Texas, Oklahoma, and two others, the PAC 10 has struck first by offering and Invitation to the Utah Utes to join their conference. As of this writing there has been no public response from the Utes.
I can think of a few reasons why they would say no and a few reasons why they would say yes. However my keen insights to all this conference musical chairs has only demonstrated my insights are as agile as an iron deer on the front lawn so I will take a pass.
It will be interesting to see what Utah decides and if the Big 12 will follow suite and try to raid the Mountain West Conference like the PAC 10 has. If they do and say BYU and TCU are asked and accepted, what will happen to the MWC? Will it become the new WAC?
As we know the MWC was formed from former WAC teams, will current WAC teams be invited to fill the void providing current MWC teams jump?
I wont hazard a guess, but will just sit back and wait and see what happens. At this stage it really is anyones guess.

PassBack Football
On June 22nd the PassBack Football will make its national debut on QVC the big boy of television shopping networks. It is anticipated they may sell as many as 4,000 footballs in 8 minutes. Hard for me to imagine doing anything than losing 4,000 strands of hair in 8 minutes if I had that many to lose.
I can see why QVC is excited to have this product on their show and why it was written up in the Wall Street Journal as one of the most innovative football training aids to hit the market.
Quarterbacks traditionally need a work out partner, some one to throw that ball to when they are practicing their delivery and other passing skills needed to be successful. If not they are bound to products that are cumbersome and difficult to use with wires and cords and such.
Not with this Football, all you need is a wall, yes just a simple wall and you can do all your workouts, three and five step drops, while practicing your delivery, improving your arm strength and accuracy at the same time.
I truly believe in this product, it great for quarterbacks, receivers and defensive backs.
Receivers you need a partner to throw the ball to you when you want to practice pass catching skills, making sure you are catching the ball with the finger tips. PassBack Football is the solution, all you need is a wall and you can work out at your convenience, building hand strength and better pass catching skills.
Why wait for June 22 when you can get one now. Use the link below, check out the training videos and then ask yourself, can this product help me improve my passing and catching skills?

Texas Longhorns Say No
It appears the Big 12 has dodged the fatal bullet with The Texas Longhorns and four other schools declining an invite to the PAC 10.
So what does this mean, I suspect for the time being the Big 12 will remain intact and will seek out two other schools to fill the void left by the departure of Colorado and Nebraska.
Where will they look? My best unqualified guess is they may go shopping in the Mountain West Conference.
TCU would be an excellent fit for the Big 12, they have solid academics and a very strong football program. Geographically they are a natural for the conference and I do believe if offered they would jump.
BYU the flag sip of the Mountain West is is my second choice that might be offered the opportunity to move up to an AQ conference, although Utah with two BCS appearances and strong wins over BCS opponents, Pittsburg 2004 and Alabama in 2008, they make a strong case for being selected to the Big 12.
Now all we can do is play the wait and see game as the musical chairs of college football continues to play out.
The one thing that is certain, the Big 12 is safe, for now.

Big 12 Does it Die on Tuesday?
Tuesday appears to be a land mark day for the Big 12. Four Boards of Regents from Big 12 schools meet and decide......whether they will stay with the conference or move on.
Most eyes will be on the Texas Longhorns who many think will bolt. also in the public cross hairs is Oklahoma, another conference "blue blood" that is expected to move to the PAC 10.
Another story that started gaining traction yesterday is a merger of the Big 12 and the MWC who on Friday invited Boise State to join their conference. It could save the Big 12 from extinction but is it realistic?
The advantages of such a merger are many. Should the Big 12 stay alive, the schools that abandoned ship would have to pony of the exit fees and remaining schools would be assured their income from the hoops tournaments. Also they would retain their AQ BCS status and that would benefit the 10 teams from the Mountain West Conference.
The question I have, is if the Big 12 does become a ghost would the BCS offer the MWC AQ status. Based on what I have seen in the past from the BCS, I doubt they would, they seem not to want to share, and leaving things as is, without the Big 12 would mean more money for the remaining conferences.
One thing for sure, the water is as clear as the Louisiana Gulf Coast, but will be resolved quicker if government stays out of it.

Time to Eat Some Crow
It is time for me to eat some crow, hard to imagine a 61 year old guy can make a mistake, but I did.
In an earlier post on the Big 12 I said with Colorado bolting tot he PAC 10 that would be the death knell for Boise State's chances of being invited to the MWC. I gave some insight as to why the Broncos would be left behind, like how the MWC would be seeking lower tier teams from the Big 12 as it disintegrates.
Yesterday I was shown how little I know, Boise State was offered and accepted an invite to join the Mountain West Conference in 2011. This is a big move for Boise State and one that as a die hard Bronco Fan I hope proves successful for Boise.
As expected yesterday the Nebraska Corn Huskers have bolted to the Big 10 giving that conference 12 members.
I hate to see the Big 12 become a ghost and don't pretend to understand what happened. The conference had college football blue bloods in it with the likes of Nebraska and Oklahoma, who is expected to jump to the PAC 10. The members were certainly cash rich and have healthy Alum support, so what happened there, I have no clue.
The one thing I do know the college football landscape is changing, changing at a pace that is to quick for this old guy. Heck I still miss roll your own windows in my car and have yet to figure out IPODs and all the other new tech gadgets. Change can be good and the changes in college sports might be just what the doctor ordered. Really what do I know, eat prunes, stay regular and try to work out.

Jeremiah Masoli: What the Heck Was He Thinking?
Another athlete for the Darwin Hall of fame awards. One we have discussed before under this very category.
Oregon Duck Jeremiah Masoli is back in the news and once again it is not good news for Oregon or Masoli.
For those that don't know after having a successful 2009 season that culminated with a Rose Bowl appearance, Masoli was involved in a frat house incident that proved he and another Duck football player had stolen Mac laptop computers from the house.
Masoli was given a second chance, he was suspended from the 2010 team but allowed to work out with them. He had one year of eligibility left and all he had to do to finish college on a full ride and play football was behave.
Apparently they asked too much because Monday night Jeremiah Masoli threw his second chance away and on Tuesday he was dismissed from the team with no chance of reprieve.
Monday night in Springfield, Oregon as he was exiting a drive way, he failed to stop and was pulled over for a minor traffic violation, one that is now his final undoing with the Oregon Ducks. It was determined that Masoli was driving on a suspended license and pot was found in the car.
His career at Oregon is finished, no school will take a chance on him, he has thrown away a college education because he acted like he was bigger than the rules, free college for a stolen Mac, driving when he was not allowed and pot. How stupid is that? A degree from Oregon could have taken him anywhere in life he wanted to go and he traded it for nothing, absolutely nothing.
I don't wish to kick a man when he is down, but I do hope younger athletes that read this get the message. It doesn't matter how big your talent is, the rules are bigger and going against them is a losing battle, look what it cost Masoli, his name is mud, football career is over and he just tossed a full ride to a fine University in the trash for pot and a stolen lap top. What the heck was he thinking.

USC Football Gets Nailed
I cannot believe my timing less than two hours after an earlier post where I say I believe the once crown jewel of PAC 10 football is going to face tough NCAA sanctions the NCAA drops the hammer on the men from Troy. Drop the hammer hard they did.
USC is facing some of the harshest sanctions since the Craig James and Eric Dickerson scandal that got the once powerful SMU Mustangs the death penalty.
After four years of heated investigations into the athletic careers of Reggie Bush and hoops star O.J. Mayo, the NCAA has ruled the So. Cal Athletic Department has operated in a most egregiousness fashion. It has been determined by the college sports governing body that these two athletes in essence played for pay and that the athletic department knew it and did nothing.
Bush has now been ruled an ineligible player, this could cost him his Heisman Trophy, I doubt he really cares since it was all about the money and he keeps his checks rolling in from the pros.Like Craig James and Eric Dickerson, he moves on unscathed while students and future athletes at USC must pay the price.
USC has been placed on 4 years probation and will lose millions by being banned from post season football bowls for 2 years. Along with this, future teams will suffer with the loss of 10 scholarships a year for the next three seasons.
Adding their woes, the Trojans must forfeit several of their final wins in the 2004 season. Which means they could have to waive their claim as national champions that year and they will have to vacate all their wins for the 2005 season.
Making things worse for USC is the probation, if more rules violations are uncovered in what appears to be an ongoing investigation into the Reggie Bush situation, more and harsher penalties can be applied.
AD and former Heisman Trophy winner Mike Garrett has no comment and SC President Steven B. Smaple says the school is appealing claiming the punishment is too harsh.
Personally I think the punishment fits the crime, USC cheated, the public, the fans and the opponents. Their program was a lie and they were rewarded millions for the deception. Had Bush not played they would not have done as well as they did. I would like to USC have to forfeit and pay back all the bowl monies they received during the Bush era.
If we want integrity in athletics then the schools that breach the rules and public trust should pay harsh penalties. Penalties that cost more money than the rewards they gain for cheating.
SC has an uphill battle to come back, unlike SMU till last season the Trojans will come back, it will take time.
How many kids that signed with the Trojans for 2010 will leave? How will they recruit against programs that can provide post season appearances during the following 2 years.
How they assure recruits the damage is over, while the investigation continues. Don't get me wrong I do not dislike USC, I am tired of seeing teams cheat the system and get paid for it while other schools play by the rules and do not see the big BCS pay day.
The PAC 10 made one good move today, getting Colorado into the fold, they will be a middle of the road team in the conference, but their days of scandal are behind them.
Now the PAC 10 must go find some more premiere names to fill out the conference and restore interest and credibility to their product.
I have nothing to support my belief, but I think Pete C saw the writing on the wall and like rats abandoning a sinking ship, he and many of his staff jumped ship to the Sea Hawks.
Shame on you Pete Carroll, you move on collecting big pay checks and the fans of the Trojans, the school and others pay the bill, your bill Pete, shame on you. too bad USC can't sue you for damages.

Has The Big 12 Died
With all the talk of conference expansion and how it would effect other conferences the question must be asked, has the Big 12 died?
Today we have confirmation of the first nail in its coffin. The Colorado Buffaloes are leaving the Big 12 for the Pac 10, giving that conference 11 members.
Even though it was wildly speculated the first school to jump ship would be Nebraska, Colorado and the Pac 10 made it official, just a few hours ago confirming the first to leave is Golden Buffaloes.
Speculation was that Nebraska could be exiting the conference as soon as tomorrow, however AD Tom Osborne has refused to comment other than to say, “Until we have a definite decision, I’m not saying anything else,”
Other candidates expected to move on include,Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Leaving the conference very weak with only Missouri, Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State.
What does all this mean, would the Big 12 still an AQ conference for the BCS's big party? Will there even be a conference.
Providing all the teams suspected of jumping ship do, I suspect the answer to the questions are no and no.
Will this put the MWC of BYU, TCU and Utah in the drivers seat to become the next AQ conference, one would have to think so. Will the MWC be able to lure some of the remaining Big 12 schools to their conference. I would think so and in doing so shore up the Mountain West's case to become a part of the BCS.
The MWC just concluded their meeting and decided to place their expansion plans on hold pending what other conferences do. They were expected to offer Boise State an invitation to join, however with these new developments, I think the Broncos can stop holding their breath.
Granted Boise would make an excellent fit for the MWC. Geographically they are close, easy to travel to and the Boise State fans travel well. However there are bigger Big 12 schools with more name recognition that are reasonably close to the anchor schools of the MWC.
Certainly the PAC 10 will want to have balance in their numbers and bring one to three more big name schools to fill the star attraction void created by USC this last season. Oklahoma would be a perfect fit in that area. They are always contenders, travel well and put fans in the stands where ever they travel.
USC has been the hallmark team this last decade for the PAC 10 last season was short of what Trojan fans have come to expect from the Men from Troy. With Pete Carroll leaving and I do see NCAA troubles on the immediate horizon for the Trojans, now makes perfect sense to expand and attract some big name talent like the Sooners.
To answer the question, has the Big 12 died, the conference as we knew it has, it happened today with the exit of Colorado.

What Are They Thinking - Are They Darwinian?
This one is nuts, literally nuts. They must be trying out for the Darwin Awards.
In the state of Minnesota there appears to be a new game raging through the high schools. The name of the game is called "sack tapping" if you think it is restricted to south of the belt line on the males species you are right.
It is a high stakes game and many young boys are paying the price, this game can change a boy from a rooster to hen in minutes.
The most recent victim of this "game" is a 14 year old boy from Crosby, Minnesota. In between classes, a class mate came up and punched him sharply in the nether region.
Around one am the next morning the young man woke up his mother complaining about excruciating pain. He was taken to the local hospital where the doctor preformed surgery removing the boys right testicle.
Dr.Scott Wheeler, a urologist in Brainerd, Minn. has made an eye opening diagnosis with the following statement, "It's just gotten way out of control," Gee Doc do your really think so? He went on to say he performs three to four surgeries a year on boys with ruptured testicles and other complications as a result of “sack tapping.”

Disclaimer, do not try this game at home or any where else, you can go from Fred to Freida in a real hurry. My God, what are they thinking?
