College Football and Television

It is only 9 fast months before we are glued to our television sets watching our favorite sport...Football. Yes 9 months seems like a long ways away but it will go fast and another football season will be here. What kind of TV do you want to watch it on? Last summer I purchased a 32 inch HD flat screen to replace my old cart TV that finally gave up its ghost. It is an excellent television but too small. The screen has plenty of width but lacks in the height I want and it was all I could afford at the time. Over the years having heard the best time to buy a new TV is after the Super Bowl I waited it out. I did not see any great deals at my local Walmart at first so I decided to wait a little longer and save up some more cash. Last Thursday I had occasion to visit Walmart and of-course checked out their newest deals on televisions. There were some deals but still a little more than what I wanted to spend. The deal that jumped out most was an LED Samsung HD Flat-screen marked down to $600.00 that normally retailed for $1,249.00. It was late and there were three of them available on what they called a managers sale. More on that later. I decided to take the rest of the night and think it over. When I returned the next afternoon to make my big purchase they were gone.....opportunity lost.....or was it? I had a nice visit with the salesman and he showed me the replacement television for the deleted version I had decided to buy. The replacement model shows 120 pictures or pixels per second versus the 60 per second that the deleted model offered. Telling me that new model provides a sharper crisper image. Deleted items still have all the warranties but are just replaced by a newer better model. He told me come back the first few days of March, saying that is the best time to buy. The new models for the year are coming out and they will be having clearance sales as well as sales on deleted models. Deleted models are the best as in the case of the Samsung, he told me at $600.00, that was less than what Walmart paid for it. A manager sale is when the manager of that particular store is allowed to put an item on sale at a very low price and it is only happening in his store. For those of you thinking about getting a new TV and getting a jump start on the up coming football season......next week just might be the best time for you to look and buy. I know I will be at my Walmart no later than Thursday or Friday. Looking for good buys on football training and coaching videos? Visit our online store at: scoretouchdowns.com

College Football: The NCAA Changes the Game

The NCAA has instituted some new rules for the upcoming season. Some of them make sense, some left me scratching my head wondering, what were they thinking. It appears the NCAA wants to eliminate kick off returns and just go with touch-backs. I understand wanting to make the game safe but getting rid of kick off returns? To me that is crazy. Kick off returns can be electrifying game changing plays and now the NCAA is trying to minimize the chances of seeing those magic moments of a guy breaking one all the way back to the paint. The new kick off rule places the ball at the 35 yard line for kick offs. Players on the kicking team will be restricted to a 5 yard running start in an attempt to reduce high impact injuries. That I do support. Even the NFL moved the ball up and this last season we saw an increase in touch-backs. Another change......instead of placing the ball on the 20 yard line after a touch back.......the ball will come out to the 25 yard line. Defensive players will no longer be allowed to leap over players blocking to protect the punter. I see the sense of this rule and how it will reduce injuries. It will make punt rushers have to come up with other ways to pressure the punter. When a player loses his helmet during a play he must cease participating in the play. That makes perfect sense. The other half of the rule..........I don't understand......perhaps some of you can explain it to me. If a player loses his helmet he must sit out one play. Where is the logic in that? What am I missing here. I can see this rule creating a whole new set of problems. Like at the end of a game when a team is driving for a come from behind win.....would defensive players try to remove the helmet from a key offensive player? There will be more rules announced that will pertain to blocking below the waist. In my opinion some of these new rules make perfect sense while others don't. I welcome your insights and comments. Is Randy Moss the Next Terrell Owens?

As we all know the NFL and T.O. have parted company. He held a workout to show the NFL what he could do and nobody came. Now Terrell is part of Arena Football. Not that there is anything wrong with arena football but it is a giant step down for a guy that was once one of the NFL's premiere receivers. By now we all know that Randy Moss wants to return to the NFL...but is there room for him? Some question if he can still stretch the field. Others wonder has he lost a step and how much his skills have deteriorated....after all he is 35....certainly no spring chicken in the world of professional sports. Moss is boasting he can still run a 4:3 forty even if that were true is it good enough. As one coach put it....this isn't an Olympic try out. Sure he can run a post and go but can he distance himself from a corner and safety covering him? The big issue is his quickness and ability to move around people and get open. Does he still have the ability to cut and to explode off the line? As always with Moss their are two camps with differing opinions. Some of the coaches that worked with him in 2010 say no and back up their opinion with how he was benched by Tennessee and had few catches with no appearances in the end zone during his last season in football. Like Owens, Moss's biggest issue is his attitude. Recently former teammate and ESPN commentator Cris Carter discussed Randy Moss and his comeback. “It’s not an age thing. It needs to be addressed. I believe it’s the elephant in the room. It’s that thing called quit." “And Randy, not like any other superstar I’ve met, he has more quit in him than any of those other players." “But Randy, when things don’t go well, like no other player I’ve ever been around or associated with, he has a quit mechanism in him that’s huge. That needs to be addressed before he signs with any team.” That is dropping the Q Bomb big time. Those are the comments that need to be said and my guess is what the teams thinking of giving Moss a chance are discussing behind closed doors. Former coach and ESPN commentator Lou Holtz once said, I never learned anything by talking." This must have been one of those rare occasions where Randy Moss was listening in-between sessions of blowing his own horn. He did respond to Carters comments on his twitter account. He came out swinging at the one man who really has tried to help him through out the years. Moss tweeted, “its sad how u stroked ur own ego when u were suppose to b my mentor!then u wonder why karma bites u in the ass! #goodlukwhof,” Note to Randy Moss, this is one of those times where you shut up, listen and adjust your attitude. Carter is still mentoring you and trying to help you. To me the lesson is clear, there will always be things we hate to hear and my experience has taught me those are the things we need to listen to the most. I have nothing against Randy Moss and do hope he can make a comeback but if he wants to really succeed he might take the advice of Cris Carter and follow his lead and the lead of the greats like Jerry Rice or Emmit Smith....their attitude led to a work ethic and action of being a team player first that leaves them as role models for any one in any field of endeavor Visit Scoretouchdowns.com for football coaching and training videos.

Core Muscle Training for Football Part 2

If you are like me, you are tired and bored with doing crunchers. They are a good work-out for the abs but they don't work out the entire core. If you are like me......I some how manage to strain my neck....maybe its an age thing in my case but either way I manage to hurt my neck doing crunchers. In this core muscle work-out tip we will rely on the expertise of David Jack, director of TeamWorks Fitness in Acton, Massachusetts. He will demonstrate how to effectively do a Kettlebell Figure 8 exercise. There are several advantageous in using this work-out. Not only will it work the core muscles from all angles it will work the shoulders and give the thighs an isometric work-out all at the same time. First we will discuss the proper position. Set your feet about shoulder width apart and the assume a squat position with the back and head up and in a straight line. Place the kettle mid to the front of your feet and your elbows pressing against the knees. This will insure you work all the core muscles and stabilize the spine. With one hand pickup the kettle and begin doing a figure 8 changing hands with each pass. When I did this I did feel the tightening in all my core muscles. Be sure to suck the stomach in to keep the abs tight and the belly flat. I particularly felt the burn in the stomach muscles going up into the chest. I also felt a burn in the quads and hamstrings. Suffering deteriorating discs in my neck and lower back made me wonder if I could do this exercise but I found it easy to do and felt the burn in the areas I was told I would. See how to do the Kettlebell Figure 8 and decide for yourself if it is an exercise you want to include in your work-out exercise. I did not have a kettle so I used a 15 pound hand weight and it worked fine. Kettelbell Figure 8 video

Core Muscle Training for Football Part 1

The holidays are over and spring training is around the corner. Time for football players to start thinking of getting back in shape.

Going into spring camp with a strong core muscle group can give a player a competitive edge. That means doing more than "crunchers" and getting that "six pack" back in shape.

What you want is muscles that will stabilize the spine, pelvis and shoulder girdle. This will give you better balance reduce the chance of injury and help generate powerful movements from the extremities.

In this article we will focus on one proven exercise that will pay bigger dividends than just the every day crunches. We will explore how to do "The Mountain Climber with Feet on the Wall."

This exercise is fun and challenging. It will give you an ab burn like you have never experienced before. Not only will it fry the abs but you will be working the pelvis, gluts and shoulders. If you learn to do it right you will benefit from the pay off of how it transfers over to your other workouts.

I think you will find The Mountain Climber with Feet on the Wall to be one of the coolest workouts you have seen in awhile and it brought to you from fitness expert BJ Gaddour, owner of StreamFit.com

Use the following link to see how the exercise is done. and start getting in shape for your spring camp. LINK
