Craig James Doesnt Know When To Shut UP

Remember Craig James the former SMU running back? You know the one who finally this year admitted he took cash under the table as a player. You know the guy who used to be an ESPN announcer.

The guy who got Mike Leach fired two years ago for an alleged abuse of James's son Adam. The guy who used his position at ESPN to vilify and excoriate Coach Leach. The same Craig James now running for the U.S. Senate from the Great State of Texas.

Mr James's senate campaign is not doing well, he is behind in all the polls. Usually this means the candidate has little to no name recognition and faces an uphill fight to win an election. In James's case just the opposite is true. Craig James has tremendous name recognition and that seems to be the problem, Texans really do know who he is and what he stands for.

If Mr. James is trying to appeal to the Boise State fans who reside in Texas, due to his body of work, he is wasting his time.

This is the same Craig James who hired a pr firm to end Leaches coaching career and now is calling Leach a bully. Craig learn to focus on the issues, your fight with Leach will be settled in the courts.

New Overtime Rules in the NFL

The overtime rules that referees and players couldn't keep straight in the playoffs are coming to the regular season.
League owners voted on Wednesday to change overtime rules for the whole season. The postseason overtime that was implemented in 2010 will now be used all year. Instant sudden death is out, with a few caveats.
Each team must possess or have the opportunity to possess the ball unless the team that has the ball first scores a touchdown on its initial possession. Play continues in sudden death until a winner is determined, and the game automatically ends upon any score (by safety, field goal, or touchdown).
In layman's terms: As Tim Tebow and Demaryius Thomas showed in the AFC wild-card game, a team will win if it scores a touchdown on the first possession of overtime. If a field goal is scored, the game continues and begins as sudden death.
Even though the playoff system was used twice in the 2012 playoffs, we've yet to see the new rules come into effect. Both overtime games wouldn't have been any different even if the old rules had been in place. The Broncos-Steelers contest finished on the first possession. The 49ers-Giants championship game extended into multiple possessions. READ MORE

The Cleveland Browns: Letter from a Suffering Fan

As sports fans we can be a suffering lot. Enduring tough losing seasons year after year and still remain loyal to our teams. Cubs fans who keep saying next year, generations of Red Sox fans who waited over 80 years to see Boston win a World Series and of course Vikings and Bills fans whose teams are a perfect 0-4 in the Super Bowl are still waiting

The Cleveland Browns have sent out their annual season tickets renewal forms and one fan has responded in a way I am sure the Browns wont like, but it is funny. Enjoy the video.

Football Off Season Training Tips

Below is a football off season training article I ran across. I found it to be informative and welcome your comments.

The source for this article is Scoutme.comhttp://www.scoutme.com/football/strength-training-and-other-offseason-training-tips-that-make-the-difference/

by admin

What drills for football do you incorporate into your workouts? Are you intent on having a standout football season? Now that the season is over some of you are probably thinking what can I do in order to maintain a high level of performance? Here are some of the tips for offseason training, drills and workouts. These workouts enable you to condition your body to gain strength and speed; all of which have a positive impact on the level of your game. Strength training through exercise workouts may be very demanding in terms of physical strain but the reward is also great for those who have the guts to brave it out!

As we all know football is a high velocity, powerful game that encompasses both mental and physical agility. One experiences a lot of pushing, pulling and shoving during the course of the game; such that the body  will be always trying to find a stabilizing equilibrium so as to balance the opposing forces. It is on this very aspect that you should model your workout training program.

The first workout is to incorporate training drills that enable you achieve stability in your core muscles; these might include abdominal low back exercises, rotational movement and a little flexing. Workouts that are known to target the core include prone, side planks and rollouts possibly with the physio ball.

For the obvious reason that the upper body is constantly pushing and resisting it may be of great benefit to include squats and a level of bench presses in the training drills. It however, should be noted that max lifts should not be overemphasized as it limits the player from developing his eccentric phase of the lift which is very important in developing the player’s strength to counter outside forces. This is a key aspect of any football players’ fitness level. All these can be achieved by incorporating lifting tempos during workouts.

Since the football players are permanently engaged in the actual field of play making compound movements by the minute, the coach should include compound exercises such as  pull ups, walking bar-bell lunges, Romanian lifts and if available the jammer extension machine.

Velocity is an important aspect of football, that is impeded by forceful  resistance from opponents this can be countered by incorporating Olympic weights in the training program such that the player learns to work the forces up his body eventually exploding through the lower body. One should also incorporate isolated work outs during the conditioning drills but they should not take precedence over the others.

A good workout program is one which incorporates string training which focuses on muscular endurance, speed, flexibility and mobility. It also has conditioning drills which help the athlete achieve the desired results. However it should be noted that the aspect of mental fitness is a vital thing that compliments physical fitness, coaches should endeavor to ensure that their athletes are at peak mental states during games and training. The intersection of these two spheres the mental and the physical is want makes the difference between a peak athlete and an average one.

These work out programs are not easy, neither are they an overnight thing. One should dedicate himself by sticking to the programs and the hard work of training will definitely surface in the actual field of play, depending on how much you put in your strength training schedule.

Football Kickers: Finesse Kicking?

By now most of us are aware of the new rules regarding college football kickoffs. However I read a new spin on the rule and the effects it might have on the game. My new thoughts are based on an article based on talks with Boise State Football Coach Chris Petersen and one of the Bronco kickers.

Football kickers will be teeing it up at the 35 for kick off and coming out to the 25 for touch backs we may see some new strategies, such as finesse kick. What this means is teams that are not strong kickoff return teams may find that weakness exploited. As Petersen indicated in his interview all of that will be discussed. Don't be surprised to see teams with strong kick off teams have the kicker boot the ball high for more hang time and try to have it land around the five yard line, forcing the a kick off return, hence finesse kicking.

Petersen pointed out the average starting point for a team after a Boise State kick off was the 23. Many times their opponent was pinned down deeper than the 20 yard line. Given the success of Boise States kick off team, why not try to force the run back and try to pin the opponent down in side the 20 or 15 yard line.

Kicking off from the 35 puts the coverage team 5 yards closer to the return man and with a high kick and increased hang time, the coverage team does have plenty of time to get down field.

The new rule was designed to reduce injuries by reducing kick off returns. I am no so certain the NCAA will get what it wants. Perhaps all they have done is just changed the kick off strategy and the way kickers kick.

Denver Broncos Trade Tim Tebow

John Elway and the Denver Broncos wasted no time in trading Tim Tebow. Tebow and a 7th rounder were traded for a fourth and sixth round draft pick in next months draft. It does not sound like they got much for the man who created Tebow Mania and increased shirt an other paraphernalia sales for the Broncos.

The question is can Tebow find a home in the Big Apple. Tebow's new team will be the New York Jets where he will be battling it out with Mark Sanchez for the starting position. Sanchez has struggled as a Jet often making bad decisions and throwing picks. He has also showed signs of brilliance, like Tebow his NFL future is not all that secure, it should be a tough battle for the starters job.

Peyton Manning Chooses the Denver Broncos

As usual my insights were spot on WRONG. I have said for a couple of weeks that I could not see Peyton Manning as a Denver Bronco. Manning proved me wrong, at age 63 what else is new:}

It appears John Elway is as good at recruiting as he was playing quarterback. The next issue, can Manning bring back to Denver what Elway did twice and Manning did once for the Colts, a Super Bowl Trophy

The next big question, what happens to Tim Tebow? Is Tebowing out the door and looking for a new home? Only time will give us the answer.

Apparently the Shoney's Restaurants offer of a free stack of hot cakes every day for the rest of Manning's was not enough to sway Peyton to pick the Tennessee Titans. Of course its Shoneys fault Manning went to Denver instead of Nashville. Their offer only stated the pancakes, no mention of a free side of bacon, ham and or sausage. No mention of coffee or juice, hows the man supposed wash those hot cakes down. Come on Shoneys next time you are going to get involved in trying to lure a franchise player to the Titans, you gotta pony up the full nine yards.

Stretching Workouts: Some Do's and Don'ts

Stretching is an important part of any work-out, it can help reduce injuries. Should you stretch before you work-out? There is another school of thought that I will share. Some think not, saying it will impede muscle contraction and diminish the benefits of the work-out. Post Work-out Stretching: This is essential, it will relieve muscle tension, improve circulation and improve muscle recovery from the workout. Some Stretching Do’s and Don’t’s Stretching Do’s 1. Make sure your back is as straight as possible to avoid back injury 2. Maintain Good Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids before a work-out, this will help your muscles give peak performance and increase stretching benefits. 3. Proper breathing: Breth slowly and evenly, exhale when exerting yourself. 4. Stretch evenly: Just like all work-outs make sure you stretch evenly, what ever you do to the front do for the back etc. Stretching Don’ts 1. Avoid Bouncing: Isee people in the gym all the time bouncing when stretching. They risk back, muscle and joint injury. Bouncing does nothing to improve the stretch. I have found holding the position gives me a better stretch. 2. Avoid overstretching: Just like bouncing overstretching can cause injury. Avoid trying to make your body stretch in ways it is not ready to perform. 3. Avoid hyperextension: Overextending your joints can have serious conequences. 4. Avoid a no pain no gain philosophy: If you experience sharp pains stop. When stretching expect to feel some discomfort while the muslces stretch out, anything more than that, stop what you are doing. These are just a few do’s and don’t’s for stretching, if you have some to add please do. After streching you might want to develop a stronger core. Check out our core muscle development DVDs

New Kick Off Rules: How Will They Effect The Game

By now most of us are aware of the new kick off rule changes in college football. The ball will be placed at the 35 yd line and the rushers can only have a 5 yd running start in instead of ten.

The idea being to reduce injuries on kick off returns. Also on a touch back the ball comes out to the 25 yd line instead of the 20.

What new kick off strategies will this change bring about? Boise State Kicker Harmon ( I know Boise State really doesn't have a kicker) sees the new strategy for kick offs as being finesse kicking. Instead of just kicking the ball deep and forcing the touch back, he suggests kicking the ball higher, creating more hang time and trying to drop the ball between the 10 yd line and the goal line.

His coach offers, the shorter kick off distance and the shorter running start distance should be off set by the shorter distance to the return man. One thing is certain we will be seeing new kick off return strategies this year.

High School Football Rule Changes for 2012

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (February 9, 2012) - High school football players will be required to sit out one play if their helmet comes off during play unless the reason is directly attributable to a foul by an opposing player under a new NFHS rule for 2012.
The addition to Rule 3-5-10 was one of eight rules changes approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Football Rules Committee at its January 20-22 meeting in Indianapolis. All rules changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors. Beat up football helmet
"The committee made this rules change after reviewing data from multiple states regarding the frequency of helmets coming off during live-ball play," said Julian Tackett, chair of the Football Rules Committee and commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. "It is the committee's hope that this serves notice for schools to properly fit players with helmets to reduce the incidence of these situations and remind the players not to take steps that alter the fit." *
In a press release on the new rule, Xenith, manufacturer of the X2 football helmet, expressed "support and gratitude" to the NFHS for the rule change, noting in its statement that its Fit Seeker® technology utilized in its helmets adapts to the head creating, it says, an instant custom fit which keeps the helmet secure during impact, thus reducing the likelihood of the helmet coming off.
For its part, another football helmet manufacturer, Shutt, said, via a response by an employee to a blog post about the new NFHS rule,  that it constantly stressed that the most important factor in extracting the best performance from a helmet is to have it properly fitted.

Other rule changes

  • Legal catch: Another significant change next season will be a new interpretation of a legal catch. A receiver now will be required to establish possession of the ball and contact the ground inbounds while maintaining possession - regardless of the opponent's action.  "In previous years, the covering official could have ruled that an airborne player attempting to catch the ball would have come down inbounds, but was prevented from doing so because of contact by the opponent," said Bob Colgate, NFHS director of sports and sports medicine and liaison to the Football Rules Committee. "Now, the player must establish possession and contact the ground inbounds for a legal catch."
  • More corporate advertising allowed: The Football Rules Committee also cleared the way for state associations and their member schools to place corporate advertising and/or commercial markings on the field of play. These types of markings previously were only allowed in the end zones and outside the field.  Rule 1-2-3l will now state that, while corporate advertising and/or commercial markings will be allowed, the markings may not obstruct the yard lines, hash marks or nine-yard marks.
  • Blocking below the waist.  A risk-minimization change was made to Rule 2-3-7 that changes an interpretation for blocking below the waist.  "The previous interpretation was that it was not a foul for a player to block below the waist if the hand(s) of the opponent was first contacted below the waist," Colgate said. "This revision changes that interpretation and stipulates that such action is a foul."
  • Kick-offs.  After experimentation in Minnesota and Iowa, the committee also revised Rule 9-3-8 to prohibit members of the kicking team from initiating contact (blocking) against members of the receiving team until the ball has broken the plane of the receiving team's restraining line, or until the kicking team is eligible to recover the free kick.
  • Play cards: The list of illegal equipment has been expanded to include play cards that are not worn on the wrist or arm (Rule 1-5-3c(8));
  • Grabbing a player's mouth guard as well as the face mask will now be a foul (Rule 9-4-3h);
  • Horse-collar rule clarified: Rule 9-4-3k has been clarified to provide guidance to game officials by adding the direction in which the opponent was pulled during a horse-collar; and
  • Glove rule postponed: The effective date of the NFHS's new glove rule was extended from 2012 to 2013. During the 2012 season, both gloves meeting the current standard and gloves meeting the new standard will be legal for play.

Game is in "great shape"

"The game of football at the high school level is in great shape, and the committee continues to review all available data to minimize the risk to participants," Tackett said. "A hallmark to the NFHS playing rules is the constant emphasis on risk minimization, as well as historic tenets regarding the balance between offense and defense and making the rules appropriate for the levels of the coaches, players and officials."
Football is the No. 1 participatory sport for boys at the high school level with 1,134,377 participants in the 2010-11 school year, according to the High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the NFHS through its member state associations. In addition, the survey indicated there were 1,561 girls who played football in 2010-11.
* Announcement of the rule came just days before a study, presented to the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine meeting in San Francisco, found that making sure that football helmets fit properly, and that those with air bladder linings are properly inflated, may be two of the simplest but most effective ways to minimize the risk of concussion and catastrophic brain injury in the sport.

TCU's Gary Patterson

TCU Horned Frogs Football Coach Gary Patterson gets it right. Some of you might recall, earlier this year or late last year the TCU Football program was embroiled in a pot scandal. Several players were accused of using and or dealing pot. Four players failed the drug test. The scandal was not limited to just the football team, it was campus wide. However it has placed the football team under more intense scrutiny.

Anyone familiar with Gary Patterson knows he doesn't mince words and has one heck of a fiery personality. For TCU and their football program this was a bad scandal and Patterson swore he would clean it up.

Patterson is a man of his word. He drug tested last month and has informed his team they can expect another one when they return from Spring Break.

"A lot of our kids can't afford to go to one of those places," Patterson said, referring to places of ill repute like Padre Island or Miami. "So they'll go home, get a chance to see their buddies. They need a break. They've been going hard since January. We've been pushing them pretty hard."

The Horned Frogs better enjoy this break because it's probably the first time Patterson hasn't had them under lock and key considering the embarrassment the program endured last month. So be good on spring break, Horned Frogs, because you'll have to pee in a cup to prove you were, and remember, big brother Patterson is always watching.

I agree with what Patterson is doing. Under his watch TCU has emerged as a football power house playing in two BCS Bowls, the Fiesta Bowl, losing to Boise State and beating Wisconsin in The Rose Bowl.

In my opinion playing college football is a privilege not a right. The players are the face of the their school and as such should hold themselves to a higher standard than the rest of the students. Their on and off field actions do receive more scrutiny than the average student, playing sports on a winning team affords them more advantages, like a pro career in their chosen sport.

Any how that is my opinion and I would love to hear yours. Please leave your comments and please vote.

Peyton Manning: Then There Were 3, Now There Are 4

How Far Should You Trust Your GPS

We have all heard horror stories of the GPS not really knowing where it is taking you. I know mine is kind of goofy. It wants to ignore the freeway and send me on longer routes but the following story is ridiculous.

A trio of Japanese kids were touring down under in Australia and were relying solely on their GPS to guide them around and things went down hill from there.

If any of you have any GPS horror stories you would like to share it would be appreciated.

Peyton Manning: Has His Own Final 4

This year we have two March Madness brackets, naturally the hoops madness and now the Peyton manning Madness and his final 4.

Manning has narrowed down the teams vying for his services to a final 4. Presumably leading the pack is the Denver Broncos followed by the Miami Dolphins, Tennessee and bringing up the back of the pack is the Arizona Cardinals.

We could hear the answer as early as this week. However even though Denver has offered Manning free reign over the offense, I just don't see Peyton wearing a Denver Bronco uniform. The altitude and the harsh winters may be more than Manning is willing to endure. Denver wont be able to offer him a nice warm indoor stadium like he had in Indianapolis.

I have a gut feeling the Dolphins may win the Manning Sweepstakes. It is close to home and warmer weather.

Where do you think Peyton will end up?

Boise State Football: Rebuild or Reload

My beloved Boise State Broncos went into spring football with alot of questions. Like who will replace Kellen Moore, college football's winningest quarterback (50-3).

The Broncos have 4 guys vying for the job. veterans Joe Southwick and Grant Hedrick. Hedrick is my pick. They also have two freshman they are very high on, Jimmy Laughrea and Nick Patti.

The really big question is this a reload or a rebuild year for Boise State Football.

The NFL Rules: It is Better to Receive than Give!!!

I know that is backwards from the way you learned it but in this case it is appropriate. Just ask Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys and the owner of the Washington Redskins. Their combined gift to the rest of the NFL teams totals over $46 million dollars and the beneficiaries of this forced gift could not be happier.

It dates back to the 2010 season where both teams did a fancy little two-step and now they must pay the band.

Peyton Manning on Tour

I thought this image of Manning to be the most appropriate, it certainly represents how teams are fighting over securing his services.

Yesterday the sports blogs were reporting that Manning had narrowed his search for a new home to two teams, the Denver Broncos and possibly the Arizona Cardinals.

However it now appears those reports are premature and Manning is extending his tour and will visit at least two more teams before he decides. One thing for sure, Manning will make his decision in short order and announce it right away once that decision is made.

Even though Denver is doing well in the mix, I don't see it. I have no foundation for my statement, my guts tell me he wont become a Bronco.

As Peyton extends his tour of suitors, please share where you think he will go and why.

Baylor's Robert Griffen III Helps the St Louis Rams Win Big

By dropping down just four spots in April’s NFL draft (from second overall to sixth), the St. Louis Rams landed the Washington Redskins’ second pick in 2012 and their first-round picks in 2013 and 2014.
That’s four players for the price of one and, by any definition, a haul.
St. Louis remains committed to quarterback Sam Bradford, the No. 1 overall selection in 2010. It didn’t need expected No. 2 overall selection Robert Griffin III, the quarterback out of Baylor. So the Rams dangled the trade bait and got the desperate Redskins, who had to hold off the desperate Cleveland Browns, to hand over plenty.

Randy Moss A Saint?

The title certainly sounds like an oxymoron, it would be kind of like referring  Terrell Owens as non attention seeking hard working team player.

However Tuesday, Moss had a workout for the New Orleans Saint and from all reports all went well for the 35 year old wide receiver. Infact he showed up so well that some thought he looked like the Randy Moss of old.

Saints coach Sean Payton is known for looking for character in his players so he can keep off field distractions to a minimum. However he does seem open to giving Moss a chance. Given the limited opportunities afforded Moss, The New York Jets have already said they have no interest, Moss must convince Payton he is a more mature man. Read more.

Football: Getting A Mental Edge

Henry Ford once said; if you think you can, you can, if you think you can't, you can't, either way you are right. Either way you are having a "self" conversation. And the most important conversations you will ever have are the conversations you have with yourself.

The right "self talk" can give you an edge in sports as well as all facets of your life. Learning what words to use and what words to avoid can make a  huge difference in how you perform on and off the field.

My personal experience using self talk has proved very effective for me, helping me be more successful in my endeavors. I am convinced it has given me a mental edge. Which is the reason I have chosen to share the information.

The book I used is Self Talk What to Say When You Talk To Yourself.

The book was first written in 1990 and is a multi million copy seller. If you are interested in learning more about this book and the benefits of "self talk" use the link below to see where you can get the book.

Football Summer Camps II

On this page I will provide links to football summer camps for athletes of all ages. They will be posted in the order in which I find them. This is not an endorsement of any of the camps: players, parents and coaches must do their own due diligence.

The purpose of this page is to supply helpful information to those who are looking summer football camps.

1, Kids Camps: This site offers football summer camps to athletes of all ages as well as a list of other camps pertaining to football. The other thing I found they are not restricted to football only they have  wide offering of summer camps for many varied interests.

2.IMG Academies: This site offers multiple sports summer camps for athletes ranging in ages from to to 18. I didn't think this was the easiest site to navigate so I am posting a link to the page that lists all of their sports. Football

3.USSportsCamps: They offer camps for more sports than just football. I could not see where they had a FQA page or anything about ages. At the bottom of the page they list featured camps and to the right side of that they have a list of newest camps. They have two formats for their football camps, contact and non contact camps that focus on fundamentals.

4. Football Camps: This site says their camps are for high school football players only. I found the site to be very user friendly. On the left side or navigation side they have a link for brochures that I think is a good way to let parents and athletes review the camps for themselves without being pressured to sign up. Another feature they have is an online chat link.

5. Schuman's National Underclassmen: This site features underclassman football combines. The link I have supplied takes you to their 2012 quick search page and here you will find all the states and dates they have available.

6. Boise State Football Camps: The Broncos will be offering two summer camps, one for kids ages 6 to 13 and the other for high school players.

7. Nike Football Camps: In the last couple of days Nike has released their football summer camps schedule and it is a site certainly worth viewing.

My research found there are alot misleading sites saying they are football summer camps and in-fact are trying to sell other goods and services.

Most if not all major universities have fine football summer camps. If the list I have provided does not fill your needs, check with the university in your area. They will be able to offer you a quality camp and affordable rates and save you money on travel expenses,
